Hybrid building in Monsanto Park_Lisbon

Monsanto Park is a natural reserve located in a hill in the middle of Lisbon. This project brings together the concepts of sustainability and mixed-use development to maximise the potencial of both. Providing a structure that allows individual units to be easily adapted for different programmes, this hybrid building combines apartments, offices, shops or restaurants. Sensitive to the elevated position in relation to the city, the horizontal growth relates to the scale of the lower buildings and St. George´s Castle.

Continuing the greenery of the park, at floor level the site is generously landscaped, with pedestrian concourses and public zones covered by the elevated part of the building. Glazed vertical cores located according to a grid  allow the access to the main part of the building which is in a high level. Overlapped cubes with a explicit metalic structure are the minimum units of the hybrid. These cubes work as a truss and shape the final porous volume. The staggered roof of the building forming a series of terraced gardens provide users a private green space.

Accordingly, the module can be easily converted into private or public spaces depending on how you overlap them and how you solve the structure. Private spaces, which need less area, use the minimum unit to create zones that project to the exterior. Public spaces can be also created by joining some of the cubes and integrating the structure of them into a big truss.  The attempt to bring natural light into deep plan offices or comercial spaces is solved by creating an empty cubic space into the public one, a box within a box. The mixed-use building is designed to be permeable: a pedestrian route through the scheme links the different parts of the project with an horizontal movement.

After studying all the climate aspects of the island we propose a researchers´ refuge in the best place, according to our previous analysis.

Because of that we decided to locate our project in the south-east side of Middelgrundsfortet Island.
