As a child, I felt ashamed of being half Mexican. I’m not sure why or how it started but I do remember getting a Theresa Barbie doll and being pissed AF for not having the white Barbie doll. I refused a Quinceañera and I told ppl I was half Spanish. I sometimes even told ppl I was half Hawaiian (who the eff believed that?). I can’t imagine the hurt I caused my mother refusing to believe I was Mexican and refusing to speak the language. I wish I could have been more celebratory with her although I don’t regret not having a Quince. Idk why this beheaded dirty Barbie doll reminded me of this but it did.
