Hello! I was wondering why is blackinnon even a thing. I mean i'm not saying i despise the ship because i have never even read a fanfic about it but Marlene is only mentioned a couple of times so who even had the idea to pair her with Sirius. Where do people even get her personality and whatnot to write fanfictions? Just curious.
Hello! Iâll take this chance to do an analysis of this pairing, itâs gonna be very long, I hope youâll have the patience to read all of it and that I will solve your doubts (:
I donât know exactly when people started shipping Blackinnon, I just know that when I started to ship it in 2011 there were already people who shipped it, because there were fanfictions and RPs and headcanons etc.
I can suppose that the first Blackinnon shippers appeared around 2008 or later I guess, after a the fifth movie came out. Iâm saying this because the fifth movie, I think, is one of the reasons why people started shipping this couple: in a scene from this movie, when Sirius shows Harry the photo of the Original Order of The Phoenix, the first person he points out, before James and Lily, before Alice and Frank, is Marlene McKinnon. I know that the movie is a very thin base to build this opinion on, since the movies not always follow the books, the fact is that people mustâve thought like âOh look, in the movie is Sirius who points her out, not Moodyâ âOh look, he looks so sad when he talks about herâ âOh look WHAT IF-â and boom. I think that could be the way it all started, but of course I canât be 100% sure Iâm not even 1% sure actually Okay, this first reason is based on the movies, but lemme go on.
To go on with the motivations, Iâll analyse the two characters; letâs start with Marlene McKinnon. Sheâs mentioned, as you said, just a few times in the books. If I remember well, correct me if Iâm wrong, Marleneâs name is mentioned just in the fifth book, on the other hand the surname âMcKinnonâ is mentioned in the first, the fourth, the fifth and the seventh book, so the McKinnon family is not an insignificant part of the story (in fact, the McKinnons are known as one of the most powerful pure-blood families). Now, since in the books theyâre called âThe McKinnonS" it is likely to believe that Marlene (the only member of the family mentioned btw) had one or more siblings or a husband. In my opinion, McKinnons is referred to Marlene, her parents and her sibling/s. I donât think she had a husband, and I have my reasons: if she had a husband, why wasnât he part of the Original Order of the Phoenix? And I donât think he was, because if he was probably Moody/Sirius wouldâve said like âJohn and Marlene McKinnonâ like they did with Frank and Alice Longbottom and James and Lily Potter. Of course, maybe she had a husband but he just decided to not join the Order, but really? You leave your wife fighting in a secret organisation against Voldemort knowing that she could get killed anytime? Mh, I donât think so. He couldâve been a muggle or a muggle born, but if basically every time they mention the McKinnons they say they are a pure-blood family or that they are very powerful wizards, so Marleneâs husband (the man who supposedly gave her the surname) couldnât be a muggle/muggle born I guess? So to me, she didnât have a husband.
About Sirius, I neednât to say much, we all know who Sirius was and how he was like, more or less. We know that he was a very fascinating guy, and probably he had a lot of girls after him when he was at Hogwarts, we also know that he didnât consider  the idea of getting married (âSirius was too busy being a big rebel to get married.â â J.K. Rowling), but that doesnât mean that he didnât have a girlfriend, there are couples who never marry but stay together all their lives.
Now, not considering the movie line, why, of all the people, did I choose Marlene to be with Sirius? And finally hereâs the part where I list the different main reasons:
They both came from a pure-blood family, and they both were blood traitor, Sirius because we know he was, and Marlene supposedly was too, since Voldemort was after her family; of course this is a supposition, but even without the blood-traitor factor they were both pure-blood;
She was in the Original Order of The Phoenix, so of course they knew each other you donât say;
Like I said before, Sirius is the one who points her out in the movie, and in the book, when Moody points her our together with Lily and James, after a few moments Sirius comes out asking âWhatâs that youâve got there, Mad-Eye?â like her name caught his attention, so I think that MAYBE even in the books thereâs something that could link to them together. I know, donât tell me, this is very, uhm, forced? But who cares, Iâm defending my otp, letâs go on;
Marlene may have been friends with Lily during their Hogwarts years and after, because Lily in her letter to Sirius said that she cried all night when she heard about the McKinnonsâ death. So, if the two girls were friends, and Lily was Jamesâ wife, and James was Siriusâ bestfriend, they probably spent a lot of time together and knew each other very well what if James and Lily wanted Sirius and Marlene to be together because they were their bestfriends aww;
Marlene means âstar of the seaâ and Sirius is a âstar of the skyâ*Mr. Bernie Kropp bursts out* Coincidence? I think NOT!;
And hereâs my personal opinion/reason: I love Sirius Black. I really admire him, I recognise his flaws but I also recognise he was a great man. Heâs my favourite male character in the books and I wanted to find someone to put beside him, apart from James, Remus etc. But I didnât want this girl to be just some random girl, that wouldâve been way too easy. I wanted to find someone special for him, a girl worth of Sirius Black. And I found Marlene. I found this girl that wasnât random, Lily knew her family, she was in the Order, she was a pure-blood, probably she was the same age as Sirius. I tried to give her a personality that could suit with Siriusâ; you also asked where do people get how Marlene was like, right? Well, thatâs the thing about Marlene! Everyone can imagine her like they want, blonde or brunette, straight or curly hair, tall or short, shy or extrovert, emotional or not, a Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, or a Hufflepuff or a Slytherin, sassy or not. For example, I personally âcreatedâ her as a girl with blonde and curly hair because Sirius loves to play with her curls a strong woman, determinate, sassy, but also kind and selfless, someone that couldâve possibly been Siriusâ girlfriend Basically yes, most of the time Marleneâs characterization comes from what we know about Sirius. I see Marlene as someone who challenged him, the girl that caught Siriusâ attention because she didnât âdroolâ after him like the other girls did, the girl that didnât see Sirius as a god because he was a handsom guy but that considered him James Potterâs dumb friend (of course with affect, she loved him).
Blackinnon means a lot to me. I love reading stories about them, I love watching videos and making edits about them, I love to read different opinions about them. I feel this couple so real âon my skinâ that I feel like itâs almost canon to me. I could go on talking about Blackinnon for hours and hours and I could write pages and pages about them, but Iâll just end this answer here. I really hope I answered you in the best way, sorry this was so long (:
