And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019, dir. Levan Akin) - #my ATWD issues
[Just for you to be warned: down there's some of me overthinking ATWD details. As much as I obviously love Merab - he is the sun of the film, the centre of its universe - he's also no big mystery: he got his heart on his face, we get to walk in his shoes, we feel what he feels and we know what he's thinking. Yet other characters's thoughts, feelings and true intentions still remain mystery to dig up for. So I'm doing some digging up for myself. I may interpret things different than other viewers]

First time watching the film I kind of assumed that when Irakli went out in the night it was like him arranging things to make the meeting possible...
...when now I see that in fact he did whatever he could to avoid the inevitable.
Beggining with the matress:
People are saying it's a classical "and there was only one bed" trope
Well, on the bed that large it really should be no big deal for three or maybe even four slim guys to sleep together. At least not for a group of guys as neutral to each other as two brothers and their male friend are supposed to be, right? It's quite obvious Irakli would have never even consider the matress if it was not the potential Merabi's closeness being his main concern. (Fortunatelly Davit was too drunk, too sleepy and possibly too concern about Sopo to realise what the case really was about)
I can imagine Irakli not being sure how he feels about going to sleep next to Merab. That is: he probably feels good thinking about it. And that means: too good. He probably realised that he actually wanted it. And that it does not feel safe considering that when being that drunk he might not be able to fully control himself in his sleep and thus there's always a risk he might involuntarily do something... well, like anything he might feel sorry about. So when he noticed the matress he just thought he might use it and avoid the shared bed dilemma quite easily. He probably made a quick plan: at the right moment I will just suggest to sleep on the floor and it will only sound natural.
But the girls came in and the plan failed.
Now it seems like he just fell asleep instantly but I don't believe it was possible for him to sleep all that peacefuly. And Merabi's going out could only make it worse: Irakli is now partly awaken partly asleep but still subconsciously aware that Merab is outside. And he already misses him, wants him so bad... Wants him to be physically near or at least to be at his sight again... If Merab was around - that would be something Irakli would try to proceed that way or another but now that he's away... No matter how much he tries to stop thinking about it he can not help but awaits Merabi's return and is both hoping for it and fearing of it... Cause then what's gonna happen? What is Merab going to do when he's back?
Is it possible that if Irakli left enough space on the bed he will just lay down here by his side ? In that case... what should Irakli do to make sure he won't reach for Merab in his sleep?
Or... might he assume that Irakli suggested the bed was too small for the three of them and thus decide to sleep on the floor himself? That sudden realisation might be the one making Irakli almost sober up: the last thing Irakli wanted was to make Merab sleep on the floor!
Now he got up and left. Not thinking too much for he simply could not stand it any more. He just felt he needs to leave. So he put on his shoes, went out, walked away and gone -
- gone down there, by the water and behind the old kvevri, to sit alone. Chose the place away from everybody and was probably even thinking that he's safe from being seen or heard down there.
He really only wanted to be left alone. Planning to... well, do whatever a guy may be doing alone and away from everybody in the middle of the night...
Well, immerse himself in his thoughts of course.
Probably keeping his mind busy with imagining Merabi coming back to the bedroom - with the big question of where to sleep once again being left for him to choose.
So - what will he choose? And what could it mean?
And what does it all matter anyway?!
...like if Merabi chose the matress - could it mean he wished Irakli to be more comfortable on the bed? Or if he chose the edge of the bed - that he maybe wants him near? Or maybe he will just fall asleep on the half of the bed hinting that Irakli should sleep on the floor for he just doesn't care at all?
...or because he is unsure about sleeping by his side as much as Irakli is?
And whatever any of these even matter?!
Irakli probably tried to find something else to concentrate his thoughts on like his finances or his dance or his sick father issue...
But then he heard someone coming.
He was not caring too much for he obviously was doing nothing wrong. And also had a feeling he recognised those steps...
[Note that there was no invitation for M.L.: he only follows because he is feeling more than he is thinking... And yes that's why we love him but it's true nevertheless]
Merab came around and sat by his side and now Irakli already is visibly exhausted.
Sighing and giving him the most joyless look: "So after all, in the end it is you again, huh?"
He would only be able to give that one little sad smile for Merabi's cockiness when he took his cig.
He would surely have never initiated the stupid fight over the stupid cigarette if his nerves were not on edge.
And that is probably another moment of sobering up: What the hell am I doing?! So I WANT him so damn much but because I'm scared I would rather BEAT him now that he is here?!
(Followed by a sudden realisation)
Surprisingly enough: the inevitable once more proved not to be avoided.
I'm really dying to know if Irakli was sleeping on the floor or on the bed that night. What do you think?
