Eternal Love: BLACK ORPHEUS (‘59) by Greg Ferrara

First, there’s the beautiful Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn), lost and wandering…

Then comes Orpheus (Breno Mello), quite taken with her at first sight.

His friend, Hermes (Alexandro Constantino), is always guarding the station…

And his lover, and soon to be bride, Mira (Lourdes de Oliveira), just wants her new life to begin.

But Orpheus and Eurydice are destined to fall in love, and Orpheus’ music can be resisted by no one…

Not even Eurydice…

But Death (Adhemar da Silva) is ever present and in pursuit of the same woman.

And so, we have the tale of Orpheus, updated from Greek mythology and placed in the present day during Carnival in Brazil. Director Marcel Camus and cinematographer Jean Bourgoin portray the story in all its tragedy and beauty amidst the celebration of Carnival, transporting both story and characters into a time and place at once familiar but still dreamily fantastical.

Where alongside the tragedy, everyone revels in the festivities…
