How a simplistic, unworkable, and ultimately stifling conception of social justice took over the American college campus.
I am interested in pursuing a career in higher education. I want have a career that allows me to challenge young minds, one that encourages me to encourage others to think outside the box, and question the changes that they could have the power to make in this world. But this article scares me; it makes me think that maybe I won't be able to encourage discussion or debate, it makes me worry that I will have to tiptoe around every issue every student has ever had so as not to hurt feelings or cause harm. I don't want to cause harm, but I think we need to take a good, hard look at what "causing harm" means, and when it is appropriate to make that accusation. As a rising senior with mild depression and severe anxiety (generalized and social), as well as other mental health issues, I have found it in myself to embrace the difficult questions, accept the controversial, and argue my own side of a story without fear. I think that recognizing the difference between being taught and attacked, questioned and harassed, needs to be addressed. Universities are meant to be places of learning, and the best way to learn is to explore different views and different sides of a variety of arguments. Sometimes those different opinions and arguments will make you uncomfortable. That's ok. Ask why. Figure it out. Make adjustments. But please, before you attack a professor for their teachings, or curriculum decisions, ask yourself (or even the professor) what it is they wanted you to learn from the experience. Most of the time, their honest intention was for you to address a different side of a story, or explore a different opinion. Please, I beg of you: consider intent, and discuss your feelings with the professor before you try to get them into trouble simply for doing their job. I understand what it is to be bullied and harassed, but I have never felt as though a professor intended anything other than a challenging and enriching academic experience for me and for my peers.Â
Depression can look different on everyone.
This is likely the most important thing you will read today. Probably even this week.Â

Just remember that sometimes, the way you think about a person isnât the way they actually are.

Summer
You know youâve not posted in far too long when tumblr actually makes you sign in again. Things have been really hectic for awhile now, and I donât see them settling down any time soon. Nevertheless, I will try to write more.Â
I finished up my junior year at GW a few weeks ago, and moved off campus to a beautiful walk-up south of Dupont Circle. The moving process is such a pain, but as I move each year, I get rid of more of the useless stuff that weighs me down. Iâm sentimental, so I keep a lot more than I should, but Iâm trying to whittle down my possessions to things that are truly important and/or truly necessary. Iâm donating and selling clothes, throwing away old course materials, and passing along books Iâve not opened in years. Itâs strange, how much consideration I have to put into the fate of each object, and itâs extremely time consuming. In the end, I know it will be worth it; my life is cluttered enough without material junk. Iâve got 3 jobs, GREs and LSATs to study for, a thesis to write... Iâve got shit to do, and I certainly donât need a mountain of physical reminders of my past eating up my new space. Itâs time to start fresh, I think.Â
My little sister graduated from high school last night, and Iâll be honest, I almost cried during the ceremony. Maggie and I are really close, and I knew I was proud of her, but listening to heartfelt speeches and watching a group of people that had grown up together reach their final milestone was... uplifting and heartwarming in an inexplicable way. Now a days itâs really easy to feel like the world is going to shit. But for just a little while, I forgot all of that; I watched 394 young people walk up to claim diplomas, looking towards the future with hope and enthusiasm. Your future is only as bright as the sparkle in your own eyes- it comes from within each of us. Next year, I graduate from college. I have no idea what Iâm doing. But Iâm looking forward to it. Mostly because Iâll be one day closer to owning a cat, but hey, whatever gets you through.Â
64 days in heaven and hell (10) A few words about friends: Schuffenecker and Ămile Bernard In 1886 Ămile Bernard met Schuffenecker at Concarneau on the Breton coast. A lasting friendship developed immediately. They especially supported each other during the difficult moments of their lives, like the breakup of Schuffeneckerâs marriage or Bernardâs emotional crisis of 1890-91.
During that stay in Concarneau, Schuffenecker paved the way for a first meeting between Bernard and Gauguin in Pont-Aven later that summer. They would see a lot more of each other in 1888, when they also frequently exchanged ideas by letter with that other struggling avant-garde painter, Vincent Van Gogh. The three of them influenced each other a lot.
Schuffenecker also took the lead in the organisation of an exhibition in 1889 in the CafĂŠ des Arts (the so-called Volpini exhibition), showing work of himself, Gauguin, Bernard, Anquetin and 5 others.
Schuffeneckerâs wife, Louise Lançon, was  known as a quite attractive but somewhat difficult woman. Their relationship was precarious, even when the above portraits were made, as is suggested in Gauguinâs painting of the family Schuffenecker made in the same year (see previous post). Bernard made these two portraits of her, each in a completely different style.

Author Peggy Orenstein says that when it comes to sexuality, girls hear that "they're supposed to be sexy, they're supposed to perform sexually for boys, but ... their sexual pleasure is unspoken."

When you find love, you take it. You grab it with both hands and you do everything in your power not to let it go. You canât just walk away from it and expect it to linger until youâre ready for it.

Love who you love while you have them. Thatâs all you can do. Let them go when you must. If you know how to love, youâll never run out.
Ann Brashares, My Name Is Memory (via wordsnquotes)
Soulmates come in far more forms than star-crossed lovers and passionate people. Soulmates are best friends who hold your secrets and ex-lovers who smashed you into a million tiny pieces before you became whole again and strangers in passing on public transportation and poets and sad people and imaginary beings. Soulmates are the kind of people who are able to make you feel things in ways youâd never imagined possible.

Humans helping humans
7 Cups of Tea is site/app where you can go to chat anonymously about really tough, personal issues like depression, anxiety, bullying, grief, stress, etc. I recently became a "listener" on 7 cups: someone that offers compassion and empathy to members/guests that need to talk to someone about these issues. Sometimes the best thing you can do for another person is be there to listen, to understand, and tell them they are not alone. The training is super simple and takes maybe 20 minutes tops. I would highly recommend this site to anyone struggling with personal problems or to anyone who just wants to help other people (or if you're like me, you can do both!) In the short time I have been a listener, I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. Please please please consider joining this community of humans helping humans. Love always
