Doing my best Marius de Romanus impersonation today by investing in the stock market like I have 2,000 years of compound interest to work with.
Adulting is so fun. I love having a diversified portfolio and absolutely no fucking idea what Iâm doing. *cries in capital gains*
armand about marius in tva: "i loved him so much. he's the bestest greatest amazingest thing that happened to me back then. he loved me and i loved him. he clothed me. fed me. bathed me. made sure i was content and learning. made sure i was getting an education and socializing. i had a super great time with him."
the fandom, (and amc) somehow, for some reason: "MY POOR TRAUMATIZED BABY BOY. HE SHOULD DECAPITATE MARIUS IMMEDIATELY! HE IS SO TRAUMATIZED! HE CAN NEVER RECOVER FROM THIS EVER! huh, santino? who is that? MARIUS CAUSED ALL HIS TRAUMA. THIS IS ALL MARIUS'S FAULT."
Today I learned there is a website called School Myths where you enter the year you graduated high school and it tells you which âfactsâ you were confidently taught that have since been completely debunked.
Naturally, I went in expecting something harmless. Instead, I learned that Brontosaurus apparently isnât a real dinosaur.
Excuse me?
I survived the emotional devastation of Pluto losing planet status. But now youâre coming for the Brontosaurus?
At this point I would like a formal audit of my entire childhood education because apparently adults were lying directly to my face.
This fandom has led me places I wouldnât go with a gun. But itâs also brought me some of the most amazing friends I wouldnât trade for all the money in the world.

So, scenario: What if Marius got married to Pandora or Bianca or, heck, even both! And he would hire you for his wedding pictures. What would you do or tell him? Will there be a "red wedding" as you fight for your man?
Oh, I have thoughts. And, crucially, I have professional qualifications for this hypothetical.
First of all: I can share. I am an adult. I am evolved. I am emotionally secure. Marius may marry Pandora. Marius may marry Bianca. Marius may marry Pandora and Bianca. I will be fine.
Will I be standing behind my camera muttering, âthat should be meâ whilst adjusting my ISO? Perhaps. That is between me and God.
Also, for anyone new here who does not know this particular piece of lore about me: I am actually a working international artist mostly in the wedding industry. So unfortunately, anon, you have asked the one person deranged enough to approach this as though Marius has just filled out my enquiry form.
There will be no Red Wedding. I have insurance.
Now. Venue.
We are staying in Scotland because I said so, and because I think Scotland actually gives us several venues extravagant enough that Marius would not spend the entire ceremony looking around with the expression of a Roman aristocrat being forced to eat dinner in a Premier Inn.
My shortlist:
Mansfield Traquair, Edinburgh. This might be the winner purely because it is literally nicknamed Edinburghâs âSistine Chapelâ. It is a former church with enormous Phoebe Anna Traquair murals, stained glass, soaring ceilings and a bloody baldacchino. I would show Marius approximately three photographs, say, âThey call it the Sistine Chapel of Edinburghâ, and then simply wait for the inevitable: Yes. This one.
Gosford House, East Lothian. If he wants something more palatial, this is going on the list immediately. It has this ridiculous two-storey Marble Hall with sweeping staircases, columns and galleries, and the house only takes a limited number of weddings. It has exactly the sort of architectural drama required for a man who considers âsubtleâ a personal failing.
Hopetoun House. Grand stately home, classical architecture, enormous grounds, very formal, very yes, obviously the groom has commissioned a string quartet. It currently hosts bespoke weddings near Edinburgh and can accommodate celebrations of up to 200.
And then there is Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute, which aesthetically might actually kill him a second time. Neo-Gothic insanity, marble, art, design, astronomical symbolism, enormous rooms. It is an actual wedding venue and can host up to 200 guests.
Unfortunately, if we are having the reception in Edinburgh, I would have to explain that Mount Stuart involves an island and therefore CalMac.
Marius has survived two thousand years. I will not be the woman who finally kills him by introducing him to Scottish ferry logistics.
So I am probably putting my professional foot down and choosing Mansfield Traquair or Gosford House.
Then, after dinner, everyone is being transported into Edinburgh because the proper debauchery is happening at House of Gods.
If you know, you know.
If you don't know, House of Gods describes itself as maximalist, decadent luxury, and the Edinburgh hotel has dark oak panelling, opulent fabrics, marble bathrooms, four-poster beds and rooms they quite literally describe as âVersailles reimaginedâ. The lounge is all dark wood, tufted leather, deep red upholstery, heavy curtains, little fringed lamps and low lighting.
Basically imagine that a Roman bacchanal, a Victorian gentlemenâs club, the Orient Express and a vampire brothel had a very expensive baby. That is where we are drinking until an irresponsible hour.
And yes, I am absolutely booking Marius and whichever wife/wives have survived my schedule into the biggest suite afterwards. Four-poster bed. Roll-top bath. Cocktail bar. Butler bringing drinks. Completely unnecessary decadence. In other words, an environment in which Marius should feel extremely normal.
Now. THE CLOTHES.
Because this is where I become unbearable.
I think his ceremony look would be exactly what everyone expects. Tailored Italian suit, probably Armani because he would rather walk directly into the sun than wear something off the rack. And I am thinking monochrome burgundy.
Not bright red. Absolutely not. Deep wine. Oxblood. Almost-black burgundy. Different textures rather than different colours. Silk shirt, tailored trousers, perhaps velvet somewhere because apparently I have been given an unlimited imaginary budget and intend to abuse it.
Gold cufflinks. Gold watch. Gold detailing. No silver.
However. At some point during the reception, I am taking him aside and saying: Marius. I need you to trust me. Which I imagine would immediately make him suspicious. Because we are doing an outfit change.
Sir. You are in Scotland. You are putting on the kilt.
And no, I am not pulling some random clan tartan off a rental rail. Absolutely fucking not. Do you know who we are dressing? I am commissioning a custom tartan woven specifically for him. Deep burgundy as the base, darker blood reds running through it, black or very dark brown for structure, and fine gold lines through the sett. Rich enough that from across the room it reads almost entirely wine-red, but when the light catches it you start seeing all the different colours.
Full formal Highland dress. Kilt. Burgundy hose. Italian leather brogues in very dark brown. A matching fly plaid, which, for anyone unfamiliar with Highland dress, is the large piece of matching tartan worn over the shoulder and fastened with a brooch. Basically: dramatic Scottish groom cape. Which means Marius gets to swish. This is important.
Gold brooch. Gold kilt pin. Again: NO SILVER. And then the sporran. For the non-Scots: the sporran is the pouch worn at the front because traditional kilts do not have pockets. Sometimes I call it the cock bag. We are giving Marius a bespoke ceremonial cock bag. But I am vetoing the enormous hairy sporrans because I simply cannot see him tolerating one. His would be beautifully worked dark-brown Italian leather matching the brogues, probably tooled by hand, with subtle gold beading and fittings.
Since it's evening at this point, he would need a Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat. For anyone unfamiliar with Highland dress, the Prince Charlie is essentially the formal evening option. It is cut short at the front to sit properly with the kilt, has little tails at the back, and is traditionally worn for weddings, formal dinners and black-tie occasions. Crucially, you wear it with a bow tie, rather than the ordinary necktie you might wear with something like an Argyll jacket during the day. Naturally, Marius's would not be the standard black barathea number everyone hires for their cousin's wedding. Absolutely not. We are having it made to measure in velvet, in one of the secondary reds from his custom tartan. Not the dominant burgundy because I want contrast, perhaps that darker garnet or oxblood running through the sett, with the waistcoat in the same fabric and antique-gold buttons rather than silver. Then I want a custom bow tie, probably silk, incorporating either a very restrained fragment of the tartan or some tiny woven Roman motif that you only notice when you are standing close enough to be in danger.
And then, finally, we arrive at the part of Highland dress where I think I might actually lose him:
The sgian-dubh.
For those who don't know, the sgian-dubh is the small knife traditionally worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose, with the hilt visible. And there is a slightly complicated bit of history here, because I am not going to tell Tumblr the neat romantic version when the actual story is messier. After the Jacobite rising, the British government passed legislation specifically intended to break Highland military and clan power. From 1746 onwards, Highland dress was restricted and the bearing of arms in the Highlands was forbidden as part of a wider campaign to dismantle the clan system. So I suspect Marius, who has benefited from imperialism (rather we want to talk about that or not), might have opinions about the cultural history attached to this particular accessory.
There is also a traditional explanation for why the little knife eventually came to be displayed in the stocking. The sgian-dubh literally has associations with the idea of a âblackâ or concealed knife, and one long-standing account is that Highland etiquette required concealed weapons to be revealed when entering another person's home in peace. Rather than remaining hidden, the knife could therefore be placed visibly in the top of the hose as a gesture that you were not secretly armed. The precise evolution is debated, and the recognisable sock-worn sgian-dubh really becomes visually established later, so I would absolutely describe that as tradition rather than uncontested historical fact.
Which means I would explain all of this to him and then immediately ruin my scholarly credibility by saying:
Anyway, Marius, would you like your ceremonial Scottish murder knife now?
His would not look like something I bought from the tourist shop on the Royal Mile. No plastic faux-Celtic handle. No enormous fake gemstone. No shiny silver thistles.
I want antiqued brass fittings, darkened enough that they look genuinely old, with extremely fine engraved vine-work curling across the mountings. Not generic celtic knotwork either. I want something almost Roman in the design, acanthus and grapevine motifs subtly worked into something recognisably Scottish. The handle should be dark wood, perhaps bog oak or ebony, and the blade would be proper hand-forged Damascus steel, so when he draws it you get those beautiful rippling patterns through the metal. Which is admittedly an absurd amount of craftsmanship for a knife whose primary modern function is to sit decoratively in a man's sock.
But this is Marius de Romanus. Of course his sock knife is bespoke. Of course it is an artwork. Of course I have somehow commissioned a bladesmith.
I think there is something deeply funny about me standing there going:
No, no. This one is culturally appropriate. Put it in your sock.
The outfit would cost more than I make in a year.
And when he inevitably looks at me as though I have suggested dressing him as a Highland cow, I already know exactly how I am selling this.
Marius. Come on. You're in Scotland.
Nothing.
It's formal Highland dress.
Still nothing.
And before you object, I know it isn't as elegant as a toga.
Immediate eyebrow movement. I have him.
But the principle isn't entirely dissimilar. Wool. Draping. Freedom of movement. Freedom from.. undergarments if you want to be a true scotsman. Considerably more leg. Fewer folds, admittedly.
And then I would hit him directly in the ego:
Besides, if anyone here can wear several metres of fabric and make everyone else in the room look underdressed, surely it's you.
Sold. Man has worn a toga. Man can handle a kilt.
Frankly, I suspect the problem afterwards would be convincing him to change back.
As for whether I would âfight for my manâ? Please.
I am a professional.
I would smile beautifully at Pandora and Bianca, work the ceremony, cry during the vows, make sure everyone has a beautiful time, bustle the dress, fix somebody's buttonhole, bully Marius into golden-hour images, and deliver them the most disgustingly beautiful product of my entire career.

@the-botticelli-vampire
đď¸ SO⌠WEâRE STARTING A PODCAST.
Because apparently writing essays about fictional vampires on Tumblr was no longer enough.
Armandâs writer @the-botticelli-vampire and I are officially starting a podcast where we psychoanalyse the vampires of The Vampire Chronicles. Character psychology, motivations, trauma, relationships, historical context, and questionable coping mechanisms.
And naturally, for our first episode, weâre starting with everyoneâs favourite 2,000-year-old Roman disaster: Marius de Romanus.
So, before we record, we want your questions.
What do you want us to talk about?
What parts of Mariusâs psychology do you want us to unpack? His relationship with power? Control? Rome? His identity as a Roman? His relationship with Armand? Pandora? Lestat? His tendency to intellectualise absolutely everything rather than admit he is experiencing an emotion? The approximately two millennia of evidence that this man desperately needs therapy?
Serious questions, unhinged questions, controversial questions, microscopic character-analysis questions. Give them to us.
You can leave them in the comments/reblogs here, or send me an anon ask with:
[MARIUS PODCAST] somewhere in the message so I know to save it for the episode.
Please enable us. We have microphones and far too many opinions about this Roman.
Somewhere far off, on the other side of the library, heels clicked against marble tiles. It was the only sound aside from the nearly imperceptible crackle of the candles spaced evenly across each table. Not that anyone could read by their light. No, that seemed to be a relic of some bygone era of this Talamasca headquarters, replaced now by overhead LEDs so garishly bright they seemed almost hostile.
David had asked me to wait here. Only he, and a select few others, were permitted down in the lower archives. An unreasonable request? Perhaps not. But my patience had never been known for its generosity. I had asked David for very little. I merely wanted only a few of my belongings that had been gathered from Paris returned to me. What possible use could they be to the order now? I was standing right here, wasnât I?
Study me. Place your fingers in my wounds, Peter!
Just as I began to contemplate simply blasting my way through the security doors to the archives, the clicking heels came to an abrupt halt. A girl appeared at the end of my row and deposited a large stack of books onto the table.
At first, I might have passed her without a second glance. But then she brushed a curtain of thick walnut hair behind her ear, and there was something about the gesture that caught my attention. Or perhaps it was the sheer scholarly concentration with which she did it.
Either way, I suddenly found myself wanting to interrupt it. This was practically a game now. How far could I push a Talamascan before they snap?
She was so terribly tidy in her movements. Everything had its place. Papers here. Books there. A pen aligned precisely with the edge of the table. She moved with an almost liquid efficiency, more like water than human.
Oh, this was going to be fun.
I pulled out the chair opposite her and deliberately let its legs scrape against the marble.
Heads snapped up from every corner of the room, each person searching for the source of the offending noise.
âPardon.â I smiled widely at the man glaring at me from across the library.
âWhat are you studying tonight?â i snatched a book from the top of her stack and read the title aloud.
âThe Ploughmanâs Lunch?â, I turned the book over in my hands, staring at it as though it had personally offended me.
âYou all baffle me.â I thumbed through the first few pages.
âHow is this research?â Another page.
âWhat knowledge could you possibly gain from reading about ancient garlic grinding?â I looked up at her, genuinely fascinated now. Her large eyes peered back at me from behind her thin gold framed glasses.
âIs this what the Talamasca does now? Catalog the history of garlic and call it paranormal studies?â
It did not take someone of my intellect to know who, and more importantly what, had just plopped himself into the chair opposite me. Entire training manuals had been written about this particular creature. Updated, amended, reissued, and occasionally contradicted by later reports because apparently consistency had never been one of Lestat de Lioncourtâs defining virtues.
Why he was sitting in a Talamascan reading room was beyond me. Why he had chosen me to personally annoy was another mystery entirely. Considering I was already skating across extraordinarily thin ice with the Order, the intelligent thing would have been to play this carefully. Keep my head down. Be polite. Do absolutely nothing that might result in another note being added to my file. That was what I should have done. Unfortunately, the insolence of his behaviour made me want to throw a book at his head.
One had to treat the Vampire Lestat rather like a particularly virulent venereal disease. Plenty of caution, considerable distance, and preferably no behaviour that might encourage prolonged exposure. Unfortunately, I would come to find out, I did not to a very good job at that last point.
I gave him nothing. No startled look when he took the book. No offended huff. No nervous glance towards the nearest senior member of the Order as though someone might come rescue me from the famous blond nuisance currently occupying the other side of my table.
Instead, I sat down in the chair I had intended to sit in. I had been using this particular corner of the reading room for nearly six months, and I was not about to be driven from it because Lestat de Lioncourt had decided he was bored.
Without looking at him, I reached and began organising the remaining books and my things. Art and Psychoanalysis by Laurie Schneider Adams. Killing the Dead by John Blair. A volume on medieval funerary practice. My notebook. Laptop. Pens.
Each took its usual place with the sort of deliberate precision that came from routine rather than nerves. If he had wandered over here hoping to watch some poor Talamascan stammer beneath the weight of his attention, he had unfortunately chosen a woman who had once defended a dissertation chapter while three professors systematically attempted to dismantle it sentence by sentence. A vampire with boundary issues was hardly going to be the thing that broke me.
The book in his possession was not even work. I had picked it up because something had been systematically eating its way through my garden and, after discovering another basil plant reduced to a collection of tragic green stalks that morning, I had begun researching medieval pest control out of a mixture of scholarly curiosity and personal vengeance. Still, if he wanted to mock the garlic, then we could talk about the garlic.
I folded one leg over the other and finally looked up and answered him in that tone I saved for the special occasion of tearing down first years or seducing old professors. âDid you know garlic was considered an aphrodisiac?â There was no hesitation or embarrassment in my tone. If anything, I let the word sit between us with deliberate ease.
There were, broadly speaking, two ways to respond when someone was attempting to make you uncomfortable. You could retreat. Or you could make the conversation significantly more uncomfortable and see who blinked first. I had never been particularly gifted at retreat.
âIn Greco-Roman medicine, and later under humoral theory, garlic was considered hot and dry. Heat was associated with vigour, blood, appetite.â I reached for my travel mug as casually as if we were discussing weather patterns. âIncluding sexual appetite.â
A small sip of coffee. âSo if one were suffering from a certain lack of enthusiasm in that department, there were physicians who might recommend foods thought to heat the body.â
I set the mug back down. âGarlic. Onions. Spices. Wine.â My brows lifted slightly. âRomantic isn't it.â
There was something particularly satisfying about discussing historical impotence remedies with a vampire who had approached my table seemingly intent upon rattling me. If this was a game, I had no intention of letting him choose the rules.
âThe association survived for centuries, in one form or another. Though I imagine the practical results were questionable. Nothing quite encourages seduction like leaning across the bed reeking of several cloves of raw garlic.â I paused, just long enough. âAlthough it remained rather popular in France.â
There it was. Small. Polite. Almost innocent. The sort of insult one could plausibly deny having made at all. âWhich may explain certain historical observations concerning the French and their... pungency.â
There were insults one shouted. Then there were insults one placed delicately on the table between two people and allowed the recipient to unwrap at their leisure. I preferred the latter.
My eyes flicked back up to his, not wavering for a moment and I reached across the table, palm turned upward in silent expectation of my book. âAnd for the record, that particular piece of groundbreaking Talamascan research concerns the slugs currently laying siege to my basil.â I glanced towards the book in his hand. âSo unless you have several centuries of practical agricultural advice youâve neglected to mention, I would quite like to continue planning their extermination.â
Just a reminder that I also RP in the VC world and this is my RP blog. I am smart AND funny đ¤Ł

New headcanon: the second Marius de Romanus discovered film, documentaries and videography, he inevitably fell down the photography rabbit hole too.
And I am sorry, but that man is absolutely a Leica guy.
Not because Leica is necessarily the most practical choice. Oh no. Because it is German-engineered, historically significant, beautifully designed, wildly expensive and comes with just enough pretension to make the price feel like an intellectual decision.
He owns three.
One of them cost more than a small car.
