so a very long time ago, my dad worked with an arson investigator
this guy was often one of the first people on the scene following a suspected arson, once emergency services had done what they needed to do. at times, there were also civilians on the periphery. often, they were freaking out, and understandably so; their home or workplace had just, quite literally, gone up in smoke
this investigator wouldn’t try to calm them down. he wouldn’t comfort them or be a shoulder to cry on.
instead, he’d walk up to the person most visibly losing their shit, hand them a fire extinguisher, and say “hey, can you keep an eye out for any other fires, and if you see one, can you put it out with this?”
of course, there was no actual risk of another fire. he wouldn’t be on the scene investigating if there was even a chance that the fire wasn’t completely put out. but the bystander didn’t need to know that
because that person, without fail, would immediately pull it together, take the fire extinguisher, and stand guard. they were, at least temporarily, calm enough for this investigator to do this job
my dad has told me the parable of the fire extinguisher a hundred times, and i think about it a lot. i think about what it says about people and crises. i think about what it says about the grounding power of having a purpose. and i think about the importance of letting someone help me through something, even if that help is just going to be another casserole to throw into the freezer, because useless or not, that fire extinguisher might be the only thing holding them together

i understand why people go legit insane like i get it
the rise of conservatism and gen z puritanism while still simultaneously trying to be hip and woke is so annoying because you have these people saying "match my freak" and then they get mad at ageplay and petplay and cnc and somno and anything raunchier than a pair of fuzzy handcuffs. you're not a "freak" if you think having a fetish is synonymous with being evil
"Match my freak" Brother you would die if I detailed my fantasies to you.
What a wonderful piece of media! Surely the fandom will be literate and normal

one thing i remember specifically making me stop caring about most online identity discourse is a conversation i had with the therapist i had when i was 18. she was a lesbian and active in the queer community in real life, and she told me about how she had two friends who were in their 50s or 60s and had been together for decades, who considered themselves a lesbian couple and always had. one of them had realized he was a trans man a few years ago, and he'd started transitioning. his wife stayed with him, and the two of them are still active in the lesbian community, and consider themselves a lesbian couple. because that's their community, those are friends they've had for decades, and even though he identifies as a trans man he still considers lesbianism a huge part of his identity because it was part of who he was for decades. and that was so eye opening to me to realize like. people don't have to perfectly meet the dictionary definition of whatever label they use because it's about community more than it's about trying to stick to whatever is the most accurate according to how the dictionary defines it

politics and destiel. the true november 5th experience.
funniest convo ever with a guy who said 2 me "nobody uses journalism degrees" and i said "my mom has a bachelors in journalism" and he smiled like knowingly and said "yeah, but what does she do?" and i said "she runs a newspaper and publishes romance novels on the side." and he literally said "oh" and nothing else. like he ended the whole conversation there.
i've just been informed he has a trombone degree. like the study of playing trombone. which is all well and good, i genuinely think we should all have the opportunity to chase our academic bliss but i do think the trombone studies guy should hesitate to judge the economic value of other people's degrees no
i love the tags on this post because there’s other music/instrument majors implying niche field-specific drama like “of course it was a trombone player 😒” and then there’s trombone majors like “this was NOT me for the record”
"why are u suddenly intersex" man do i have news for you about people learning things about themselves
sorry for the double reblog but i wanted to add something im just old and not used to the web tumblr update. anyway
Not to mention that being intersex, 9 times out of 10, nobody is gonna TELL you you're intersex growing up. You're gonna just find out one day that your body isn't perisex and was most likely mutilated right out of the womb. Or maybe you presented perisex at birth but then uh-oh! Hormones are different when you hit puberty and you're left wondering why you're not like anyone else you know. You don't understand why nobody else is struggling in the same ways you are. You can't find answers to the questions you have about yourself and conclude it must be you and only you. You just have it in the back of your mind that you're a broken freak.
Then you find out about intersex and, at least for me I thought it couldn't be until my mother just casually mentioned it one day in a conversation completely unrelated.
I was completely fucking devastated. That my body being literally mutilated as an infant under her care wasn't even worth the time of day to sit me down and have a fucking conversation about! She just says it casually like it's not a big deal. Well, it is to me. It is to every single other intersex person on the planet. And THAT MAKES ME LUCKY!!
Most intersex people will NOT get even that. They find out other ways, either from a doctor or from looking into it themselves long enough.
The question shouldn't be "Why are you suddenly intersex?" it should be "Why didn't anyone tell you sooner?" The reaction shouldn't be dismissal it should be outrage.
What I hear is "Why are you suddenly aware of what we worked so hard to hide from you?"
Unfortunately, you cannot stop a body from doing what it will do. All you can do is break a mind into thinking the body is wrong and doing whatever one can to "fix" it.

Actually everyone is problematic. I don't believe anyone who says they aren't problematic. What's wrong with having problems anyway?
