I need to keep a list. 

I just found out about this man, Hugh Thompson. 

He essentially halted the rape and murder orgy by American soldiers at the village of My Lai in Viet Nam during the Vietnam War by placing his chopper between the civilians and his own soldiers and telling them he’d mow their asses down if they continued the onslaught. He then flew the survivors to military hospitals for care. At least 500 Vietnamese non-combatants were brutally murdered at My Lai by US soldiers before Thompson intervened. 

He was vilified by the Army and many of the American people for publicly exposing the Army’s actions at My Lai, and spent the rest of his life with ptsd, alcoholism, and severe nightmare disorder that contributed to his divorce. In other words, his own life was basically ruined by his heroic compassion. He died about 12 years ago at the age of 62 of cancer, and is buried in Lafayette, Louisiana, with full military honors.

Anyway, the breaking point that incited his plan of escape was being forced to watch Barney reruns all day, everyday at his care center. Yoko Taro’s (NieR Automata Director) Favorite PS4 Games:

RESOGUN - I always keep an eye out on the games that Housemarque senpai creates, but the playability of their game that hits the spot as a shooting game, and the way the graphical effects are flashy but not gaudy is striking.

Final Fantasy XV - I was thinking “oh man, Versus is an action RPG right? It would suck if the release dates were close to each other.” Looking back, I feel like I was trapped by the curse of Versus for about 10 years. This game and its content created over the course of 10 years is unparalleled and unique, and I enjoyed it a lot. 

Horizon Zero Dawn - I was stunned that a world filled with such imagination like this title would be created. By the way, the release date of this game was only one week apart from NieR: Automata, the game I created. I thought I was going to die. Well, I did die. (I just noticed that I keep on talking about release dates…)

Gravity Rush - I feel like recent Western titles are polarized into super AAA titles and indie games, but the Gravity Rush series is a game right around the middle of the two. By the way, I go out to drink with the director Keiichiro Toyama once in a while but the only image I have of him is him being drunk, and I can’t help but think “how can a title like this come from a person like him?”

Danganronpa - I go out to drink with the scenario writer Kazutaka Kodata once in a while too, but when I saw his piercing eyes that appear as though he doesn’t trust anyone around him, I thought “ah, he does seem like the person that would create a mad game like Danganronpa…”

Life is Strange - The direction is completely different! This surprise was how I met Life is Strange. In sharp contrast to Remember Me, this title is about life in school in a quiet city. By the way, Remember Me is still not localized into Japanese, when is it going to be localized?

It’s not even just with things like racism (although don’t get me wrong, racism is horrible), this is an antifa thing. This is a “Let’s kill all the goat-f*ckers” thing. This is a “What that person did was so bad they can’t possibly be a person” thing. It is, for lack of a better word, illogical.

There’s footage of Adolf Hitler telling jokes and petting kittens and people are genuinely surprised to see and know this, as if he was some kind of alien who orchestrated a genocide. They can’t even seem to process that a real, flesh-and-blood human was behind those horrors and he did normal mundane people things just like you and I. We’d all want to distance ourselves from someone like him, and maybe that’s understandable, but it’s also a bit….self-righteous.

Much as we’d all like to think “real” people would Never Do Really Bad Things, everyone is capable of it to some extent. If you’d been brought up in a different environment, raised by different parents, experienced different things in life, lived in a different time, you would likely be very different from who you are today. You may be better, you may be far worse. You may be so bad that someone out there will decide you’ve stopped being a “real” human and be relegated to this nebulous concept of being a “monster.”
