FRONT KICK (ě 차기)
The first kick you learn in Taekwondo. Not the most powerful kick, but quick and effective.
It can easily be mistaken for push kick, as itâs also called the front snap kick. The snapping motion is basically pushing your opponent away. However, Iâm going to show you my version of the front thrust kick.
Aim: ribs, shoulders, solar plexus, chin, headâŚ
There are two versions: kicking with the ball of your foot, or with the instep.
In my dojang, itâs recommended to kick with your instep in sparring, and with the ball of your foot in training and performance.
Step 1: Stand at the fighting stance, with feet at 45 degrees and parallel to each other.
Step 2: Bring the knee of your rear-leg up, and keep the lower part of that leg straight. Your standing leg turns slightly at around 45 to 90 degrees. You should lift your heel to turn. It should be allowed to pivot.
Step 3: Bring the lower part of your leg up, kicking the target with either your instep or the ball of your foot. Your leg should be on a straight line.
Step 4: Bring you leg down to the position of step 2.
Step 5: Put your foot down to the initial position.
Some tips for beginners:
Itâs quite difficult to keep your leg straight or maintain balance. Start slow, hold onto a chair to get used to the motion. You can lie down to practice kicking your leg straight before standing up.
I notice some students have difficulty kicking with the ball of their foot. You can practice by standing on tip toe and walking around the dojang.
Your back can bend slightly, hands close to the body and face while kicking. Donât turn your foot or hip too much as it will become the roundhouse kick.
This is my last warning to my students, fans and followers:
âStop sending disgusting, hateful anonymous messages to other people.â
You gain nothing from it. You think youâre entitled to spread whatever the fuck youâre thinking and feeling to other people, here or in real life? Without consequences?
I tell you what? Grow the fuck up! Get help! Is it that hard to be kind? I know Iâm a fucking hypocrite for saying that, but I learned my lessons the hard way. You donât know the real battles people are facing every single day. You donât know how hard it is just to live by and be positive to other people. You donât know just one random act of evil from you behind the screen can kill people.
Look, Iâm here for Taekwondo and fun. However, Iâm also here to face past trauma and develop as a kinder person. Learn how to live and how to love, people. Know the differences between online and real life.
For the people getting hate, I want you to grow above it. Rise, not succumb. Youâre much more than that.
As my dear friend Lee Dowoon (in real life) used to say: âDonât let people take advantage of your kindness. Fight back. Youâre worth it.â
STUDENTâS OATH AND THE FIVE TAEKWONDO TENETS
Since you guys questioned my morality as a Taekwondoin, ironically, Iâm going to teach you the five tenets in the studentâs oath at my dojang.
Tenets are moral values and guidelines. You should learn them by heart and apply them as a Taekwondoin, and also a member of society.Â
In my dojang, itâs a custom to recite them at the end of class. You say the oath while facing your master (me or my dad), bow to him, turn to each other and bow.Â
You should say,
âI, as a Taekwondoin, swearÂ
To uphold the five Taekwondo tenetsÂ
To respect my master and my peersÂ
To never abuse Taekwondo
To use Taekwondo for justice
To be a good member in society.â
The five tenets are:
1. Courtesy (ěě): Treat each other with respect
2. Integrity (ěźěš): Be honest, modest, and to determine right and wrong
3. Perseverance (ě¸ë´): Try your best, to never give up
4. Self-control (ꡚ기): Be patient, to control your emotions and actions
5. Indomitable spirit (ë°ąě ëśęľ´): Face injustice and challenge with courage
This is the picture of five tenets at my dojang.Â
ROUNDHOUSE KICK (ëë ¤ 차기)
I must say, itâs the most used kick in Taekwondo, both in sparring and real fights. It is quick, definitely more powerful than the front kick if executed correctly, with the addition of your hip turning side way.Â
Aim: thighs, hips, ribs, shoulders, headâŚÂ Â
Same with front kick, roundhouse kick has two versions: kicking with the ball of your foot, or with the instep. I wonât repeat the recommended usage of each version. Keep in mind, if you canât master the front kick, I wonât teach you the roundhouse kick.Â
Step 1: Stand at the fighting stance, with feet at 45 degrees and parallel to each other.
Step 2: Bring the knee of your rear-leg up towards your chest, and keep the lower part of that leg straight.Â
Step 3: Unlike the front kick, the heel of your pivot leg lifts up and turns around 90 to 145 degrees. Your hips also turn, so that the thigh of your kicking leg is paralleled to the ground. Â
Step 4:Â Kick the target with your instep or the ball of your foot in a snapping motion. Again, your leg should be on a straight line.
Step 5: Bring you leg to the position of step 3.
Step 6: Put your foot down at the front, in a fighting stance.
Some tips for beginners:
The most common error in my students is that they skip step 5. After kicking, their legs drop to the front. This creates an opening for your opponent, limiting your chances of further defense and attack.Â
If you find it difficult to keep your leg in the air for longer time, practice with a chair or a wall first. Strengthen your balance by standing on one leg. Or practice lower body exercises like squat, lunge, side lunge, etc. Â
You see my right arm is swinging backwards while my right leg is moving forward. Itâs simple physics, really. Your other arm should hold up to protect your face. Â
CRESCENT KICK (ë°ëŹ 차기)
Itâs one of the most basic kicks in Taekwondo. Unlike Karateâs crescent kick (you can ask dweeb @ji-yeonwoo), Taekwondoâs crescent kick is easier to master.
Since @yoo-hobin asked, Iâm gonna teach you how to do it.
There are two variations:
1. Inner crescent kick (ë°ëŹ ě 차기)
2. Outer crescent kick (ë°ëŹ ë°ęšĽ 차기)
There are also two ways to kick: with a straight leg or with knee snap.
Aim: the head
In order to do it, you must be flexible and stretch carefully before practice. Do not skip your warm up!
Step 1: Stand in your position. Either with parallel feet or one foot behind.
Step 2: Raise your leg as high as possible, about 45-degree (more or less) to your body. It can be inwards or outwards.
Step 3: Sweep your leg towards the target and hit it with the your inner or outer foot. For the inner crescent kick, itâs towards the centerline. For the outer crescent kick, itâs away from the centerline.
Step 4: Put your leg down and return to the initial position.
Some tips for beginners:
Crescent kick can be difficult for non-flexible students. Many canât reach the head, so they try to stand on tiptoe. Donât do that. You decrease your balance since itâs a heavy kick.
Other thing I notice is that some students bend their backs, so that their foot seems to reach a higher target. Donât do that too.
For sparring, itâs mostly used for close distance. I personally like it more than the axe kick, despite being less powerful.
(I know my postures here are shitty, but technically itâs recommended to follow the standards.)
