one of the popular headcanons on this site is that crowley is âwhippedâ for aziraphale and that zira has crowley wrapped around his finger and deviously tugs at crowleyâs heartstrings to get favors because he isnât as pure and sweet an angel as heâd like to think he is, BUT consider this take:
aziraphale is genuinely surprised every time crowley acts kindly toward him, whether itâs to show up and help him during the french revolution, or save him from nazis, or even little things like remove a stain from his coat. and why is he so surprised? because heâs never been shown such benevolence from anyone.
weâve seen the way aziraphale has been treated by other angels. these supposedly benevolent creatures of love have done nothing but belittle and berate him, likely since the dawn of time. itâs easy to see why zira would come to recognize that as standard treatment. and then the one person to show genuine concern for his well-being turns out to be a demon, a creature thought to be incapable of loveâ well, of course heâs shocked, again and again, though itâs never unwelcome.
aziraphale may be a bit of a bastard, but he doesnât set up these scenarios expecting a besotted crowley to come leaping to his rescue; aziraphale really, truly doesnât expect any generosity, because heâs never received any even from those who should be most capable of it. even the almighty themselves wouldnât give him the time of day. to him, crowleyâs tenderness is foreign and seemingly undeserved, and part of aziraphaleâs journey has been accepting that he is deserving of such love.
