yesterday my dad asked us to help him figure out how to deal with taxes; it turns out mom had compiled all the stuff for 2024 (in 2025), and the accountant had gotten an extension for them, so taxes were due to be filed/paid in september. which did not happen, because no mom. and dad didn't do 2025's by april, either. we went through the boxes of receipts and bills and clipped them together into piles. my brother will take him to the accountant next week. dad is like "i kept putting it off and i deserve all the penalties and fees, it's fine." apparently he told my brother he had started losing sleep over the taxes thing. so hopefully that will get better

in doing all this we saw their xfinity bill is $334/mo

what the FUCK

i actually have the login for their account, bc my mom gave it to me to watch hbo (and i gave her my netflix pw). i thought they just had hbo. no. due to the various shifts and changes in the channel packages, they have some kind of "premium content" add-on that includes hbo, showtime, paramount+, mgm+, espn unlimited, and half a dozen other streaming things no one knew they had or ever looked into. their bill is $290 for tv, plus charges for equipment. the phone and internet are both listed at $0 for service, presumably due to having one zillion dollars' worth of tv stuff.

when i went through to try to change the plan to something cheaper, there's no options for the landline offered. just xfinity mobile. he doesn't have and doesn't want a cell phone. i'll have to actually call xfinity to be like "what are my options here? do not attempt to upsell me i will fucking kill you."

he's been using the same email address for 25 years so i don't know if i can manage to get him out of comcast's grip entirely. but maybe we can get rid of most of the tv stuff idk

today's plans, now that i've gotten some crying out of my system by rereading things i wrote about my mom last year

laundry bc i got disgusting fish/scallop water all over myself at the wildlife center yesterday (me: "oh no some of these baggies have holes in them! agh i'm covered in fish water!!" as they spew all over me. a lesbian on staff: "happy pride!")

listen to the second dungeon crawler carl book and piece unicorn panel quilt background bc then i will not have The Thoughts. this is the bulk of my day i think

idk, if A wants to go on a quest for wool roving to start needlefelting, then we will do that, but she's residually tired and sore after the 8th grade dance last night ("there was too much jumping. my legs hurt")

when i get tired of piecing or whatever maybe i'll read some eyeballs book (sublimation)

Hi, Yarrow! A possum wandered into my backyard a few minutes ago and ambled around for a while and then went into the house I have for feral cats. It’s 10AM and about 80 degrees on the east coast and you are the only person I know who knows about wildlife. Should I be worried/could it be sick, or is this normal possum behavior? Thank you!

I’ve never seen a possum in my life! honestly it’s probably fine just looking for a shady spot to lie down BUT you should call your state’s fish and game line to be safe. they might have you trap it or they might say oh yeah that’s Jerry he’s a known quantity and he’s probably curling up with your feral cats.

i am not an expert but i am a wildlife rehab volunteer on the east coast where there are a zillion of these things. it's probably fine and just looking for a cool, dark place to hang out. but definitely call wildlife experts before you do anything

notes:

a) it's baby season, where you'll see otherwise-nocturnal mamas trying to find more food out in the daytime. is there food in there? they'll eat almost anything

b) opossums have a v low body temp that makes them much, much less susceptible to rabies. they can still get it but it's pretty unlikely

c) injury could also be a reason, but they already walk like *dowager countess voice* "it is uncouth to hurry" so it can be difficult to tell

I was ten years old when my dad took me and my little brother to see South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut in the theater so perhaps my barometer is off. But if your parents are not letting you watch and read basically whatever you want/delimiting your access to culture on the basis of what they have decided you are prepared to handle (as opposed to trusting you to make those decisions for yourself and to come to them for assistance in discussing/understanding if you need), they are not as enlightened and permissive as you’d like to believe.
