second brain
i drank too much coffee one morning and it appeared to collect in my skull and solidify into a second brain uncomfortably situated next to my first brain, who was unused to visitors let alone cohabitants. the second brain was always several steps ahead of the first, thinking from a future the first had yet to arrive at, yet would always meet and find disappointing, in that it resembled in every detail what the second brain had described. i went through the whole day like this, bouncing thoughts between brains, thoughts that got duller and less distinguished as they conformed to an expectation that the second brain already knew as reality. the world slid apart a little, then tessellated on top of itself, but there was nothing to see inside the fold between tessellations, that dilated space where a thing is almost another thing but not quite. everything's potential was already determined, so the space itself was determined, wasn't even a shift let alone a transformation, just it, itself, stamped over and over again on itself until it was gauzy and unreadable, and yet it was so obvious what it was that it wasn't even worth finding out.

gentrification is when trash goes in trash cans
context: these are not trash cans for pedestrians to throw their food wrappers and whatnot in, nyc already has plenty of those. these are trash transfer bins for buildings. up till now, the official procedure for the enormous volume of trash generated inside all of nyc's tall buildings was to package it in big black plastic trash bags and pile it on the sidewalk for the trash collection trucks to collect. people have been talking about installing collection dumpsters for decades and i guess mamdani's finally getting it done.
in case you're wondering why the hell anyone would object to not having stinky plastic trash bags piled high on the street at least twice a week every week, or to making the trash collectors' work go faster and be less dangerous, it's because the plastic trash bags get piled on the sidewalk and the bins, as you can see from the picture, will permanently occupy spaces formerly used as street parking.
yes, even in the most pedestrian-friendly city in the USA, where a substantial minority of residents have never learned to drive, car brain is still a hell of a drug.
