It's a busy night in the tavern Varyne has found himself in. There's a large group of people, seemingly here to celebrate something, all drunkenly chatting around the bar. The warm glow of candlelight illuminates the place, making it almost seem festive, in a way. A stark contrast to the cold snow outside.
The vampire has holed themself into a corner, a great spot to watch everyone while they idly swirl the booze in their hand. It's for show of course, the poor drunkards are what he's really after.
He watches one of them stumble out the door, and contemplates going after them. If he's quick, no one would notice a thing. No one has even spared him a glance, besides the bartender.
Unfortunately for him, however, his planning gets interrupted as someone walks up to his table. Their expression turns sour as they sit up, eyeing her.
"I'm not interested."
@ourladyoftears (hope this is alright for a starter)
The woman standing beside the table is... unusual to say the least. Her elegant silken ensemble looks out of place in both style and price. She smells faintly of osmanthus, and makes no attempt to hide her jewellery. What draws the most eyes, though, are the fiery orange fox ears sticking up from her hair, and the matching tail resting against the back of her skirt.
Despite having the bearing and finery of an aristocrat, she seems very comfortable in this seedy tavern with people of questionable repute. The stares don't seem to trouble her. In fact, she seems to enjoy the attention she draws.
Not at all put off by Varyne's cold greeting, she slips into the chair across from him with a charming smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. When she speaks, her voice is a low purr, soft as velvet.
"Ah, but you don't know what I'm offering yet."

He reaches for the bag and opens it, taking a few coins out to look at before letting them clink back into the pile. This would be more than enough for a horse, something he had been needing for a while now. If Jiayu can pay like this, then theyâll eventually be able to get better gear as well.
Unfortunately, Varyne canât pass on this job.
He glances up at her again, catching her meaning, then quickly scan the room. He wants to be sure no one is listening in. âIt wonât be a problem, I can assure you that. So long as you allow me time to hunt.â
Jiayu nods, clearly pleased with his begrudging acceptance of the job.
"Naturally. Who am I to hold your vices against you?" she purrs, offering a tiny shrug.
"But more importantly, you accept. Good. When can you start?"
They hadnât expected her to be so relaxed about it. A pleasant surprise.
Varyne shrugs. He doesnât have anything important going on, and he was already planning on leaving this town eventually. âWhen do you need me to? If itâs soon, I must tell you that I donât have a ride.â
Jiayu's grin only grows, stretching perhaps the tiniest bit too wide for the briefest of moments as she slinks out of the booth again.
"Not to worry. Why don't you gather your things and follow me, hm? A carriage to my estate awaits just outside."
She shoots them yet another glance over her shoulder, infuriatingly self-satisfied. Confident that he has no choice but to follow obediently.
Stepping into the carriage, she taps her pristinely manicured nails against the polished wood of the window frame, waiting patiently for her new asset to scurry in after her.

He doesn't return the smile, instead just pulling back his hood so she can see him better. Their hair is mostly gray, and there's a large scar, some kind of burn, covering a good portion of their face and head. Lines from age etch his gray skin.
His eyes, glowing a soft yellow, flick back over the crowd, before staring at her. Something about her smile, the way she talks, is already grating. They seem to have terrible luck, to run into people like this so often.
Varyne sets his glass down with a soft thud. Jiayu can see it's still full, completely untouched.
They mutter something about wanting to be alone under their breath, dragging a hand across their face. But then they cross their arms, leaning back as they squint at her. "...How much? I am not cheap."
For just a moment, Jiayu's little smile widens into a small grinâ showing off just a hint of her sharp canines. Her sensitive ears twitch as he mumbles, easily picking up the words but choosing to ignore them. Bitter as he may be about her intrusion on his evening, she's sure she senses a hint of resignation in his tone. Good.
"I assure you, serjo, payment will not be an issue." she chuckles, interlocking her fingers and leaning her elbows on the table. She notices the untouched drink almost immediately, but doesn't mention it.
Her smile drops as she continues, her tone now more businesslike than playful.
"I have need of a bodyguard. A proficient and experienced one. Your services come highly recommended." she begins. "Name your price, and I'll see it paid."
He raises an eyebrow at her use of phrase. He rarely hears anyone use that term for himself, not unless they're other elves. She certainly wasn't trying to be polite, she was only using it since she wants something out of him.
She gains their full attention from her change in demeanor. They won't lie, they don't particularly enjoy when these types of people hire them. Usually they are up to something shady and are difficult to work with, while those who appear meek are far more agreeable. Still, money is money, and he won't turn down a job that will pay decently.
It is uncomfortable, the mention of others 'recommending' him, he doesn't quite enjoy having his privacy intruded, but that was to be expected at this point.
Varyne rolls his lips, thinking. "No less than two-thousand gold upfront. The rest depends on how long you require my services and if we will be travelling."
Their easy agreement brings her smile right back. Upon hearing the number, she reaches into a hidden pocket sewn into her sleeve and fishes out a bag of coins, sliding it over to him across the table.
"That would be 2500. I seem to have overestimated your rates." she sighs, but waves her hand dismissively. "Oh, well. Consider it an advance payment."
Her eyes flick between his face and the untouched glass in her peripheral vision, and her smirk morphs into something more amused. Knowing.
"I trust your... condition... won't be an issue?" It's more of a statement than a question. She even gently taps a finger against her lips as she says itâ right where her canines areâ for emphasis.

"Ah, but you don't know what I'm offering yet."
The crunching of leaves and snapping of twigs intensify the frantic footsteps against the soil. Each step hurts, and every muscle begs for reprieve, but adrenaline forces her to push through.
The pale figure suddenly halts in her tracks, black eyes widening with dawning horror as she comes face to face with another person.
She looks down at herself, recognising the gruesome picture painted across her form. The blood is mostly dried now, but still unmistakableâ coating her hands, smeared across her chin, and soaked into her clothes.
"I- I didn't-... This-..."
Her lungs burn with each ragged breath as she tries to force out some kind of explanation. Anything coherent at all. She gestures vaguely to herself, scrambling to find words until she finally manages to spit out perhaps the least convincing defence possible.
"...This isn't what it looks like."
Deirdre had been walking in the woods like she usually did this time of day, her mind wandering as she stepped past trees. A cigarette hung loosely from its lips while it was lost in thought, thinking of its plans for tomorrow as it picked at the threads inside its coat pocket.
Unfortunately, though, she gets interrupted as someone runs into her. Her eyes squinted behind her shades at the bloody figure before her, making it look more like she was scrutinizing her rather than shocked to see her. It let out a puff of smoke as it plucked its cig from its lips, motioning with its hand as if to tell the woman to 'spit it out'.
"Looks like blood to me, a lot of it. Doesn't seem fake, either." Strangely, she doesn't sound panicked at all. If anything, her tone is rather flat, almost completely void of emotion if it weren't for that slight edge of judgment. That coupled with the odd paleness, scars, and piercings, already makes her seem like an absolute joy to be around.
It looks her over for an achingly long second, before sighing out more smoke. "âŠCare to tell me what happened? I won't rat you out, you seem jumpy enough already."

Deirdre's face immediately relaxes back into her odd blank expression, which looks far more natural on her than whatever bizarre face she was pulling a second ago. It's too used to acting 'normal' for everyone but her friends, that it forgot Lorelei probably wouldn't have cared. It's kind of a relief.
"Right... Anyway. Goodnight." She stands there a second, awkwardly rubbing at her neck, then turns to go into her room.
The entire apartment is quiet; the only sounds she can hear are the neighbors' muffled voices next door, and the wind blowing outside. Lorelei is alone now, free to do whatever she pleases(technically), or she could just go to sleep.
If Lorelei was of a less moral character, now would be the perfect time to act upon it. Admittedly, the thought of stealing some supplies and running does cross her mind a few times, but fortunately for Deirdre, Lorelei isn't quite so desperate yet. It's amazing how easily a little bit of patience can disarm a person.
No, Lorelei has had more than her fill of sin and guilt for a long, long time. The thought that Deirdre may still have sinister intentions lingers in the back of her mind, but betraying the one person who has shown her kindness would only add to the heavy emotional burdens on her shoulders.
She's free to do whatever she pleases, and nothing would please her more than some half-decent rest. After shimmying out of her outer layers until she's in nothing but her shirt and underwear, Lorelei tucks herself in on the couch. The knit blanket is a little scratchy, but she snuggles into it as if it were preciousâ which it is.
It takes a few hours of tossing and turning, but she's eventually able to drift off to some much-needed sleep.

âAlrightâ I was just making sure.â Deirdre holds its hands up, as if to tell her to relax.
It exhales, pulling its phone out to check the time. She could already see the sun setting even lower through the curtains.
She doesnât want to leave her to wander around too late, especially because of how jumpy she is. She would definitely get stopped if someone noticed how strangely she was acting.
ââŠItâs getting late, and Iâm sure youâre tired, so youâre welcome to stay on my couch for the night. I can get blankets.â It then quickly adds, âYou donât have to, though. You can leave right now if you really want, but, you know...â
It trails off. She doesnât know how to handle a situation like this. Most people sheâs met whoâve eaten other people were a lot lessâŠsoft, usually threatening her or not caring that she existed. It doesnât want Lorelei to feel uncomfortable or more afraid.
Lorelei hesitates to answer, still unsure if that's a good idea. But then againâ the streets are dark, her clothes are wet, she's exhausted, and she might have a concussion. She's not exactly fit to travel anywhere on her own right now, especially without a destination in mind. Her entire life has been uprooted in the span of a night, and for now she has no choice but to rely on the kindness of a stranger to recover and form a plan. It would be rude to decline.
"A blanket might be a good idea." she nods, gently so as to not agitate her head too much. "Thank you."
It smiles, a much softer and genuine looking one than before. She hurries off to her room to grab the spare pillow and blanket she has folded in her closet, then comes back and hands them to Lorelei. The blanket is a thick, knitted thing, and they both smell like nothing, somehow. All that really matters is that they're soft and will keep her warm.
Deirdre doesn't want to be overbearing, but she does hang around for a second, thinking to herself. "If you want to watch tv, you can, but it's just satellite.... Obviously you can get more water if you need it, and you know where the bathroom is. Get me if you need anything else?"
Lorelei nods along, holding out her arms to accept the surprisingly heavy bedding with a tiny grunt of thanks, gently laying them across the couch.
She pulls off her damp hoodie and sets it aside, leaving her in a loose t-shirtâ exposing more of the pale, pearlescent scales trailing down her spine and the back of her arms to the low light.
Just as Deirdre is about to leave, Lorelei turns to it again. A little awkward, but well-meaning.
"You don't have to do that if it's extra trouble, by the way. The smiling, I mean." she says, gesturing vaguely to her own mouth.
She knows how taxing it can be to worry about one's own expressions constantly. It would be utterly hypocritical of her to expect that kind of performance from anyone, much less someone who's already been so accepting of her strangeness.
The crunching of leaves and snapping of twigs intensify the frantic footsteps against the soil. Each step hurts, and every muscle begs for reprieve, but adrenaline forces her to push through.

Deirdre had already let itself in when it heard her fall. She doesnât appear to be shocked, as sheâs still wearing her shades, but she does move quicklyâit reaches over to shut off the water, before kneeling beside Lorelei and taking a quick glance at her head.
It had already assumed there was something different about her, and its suspicions have just been confirmed because of the scales and teeth, but it doesnât really care. It wouldnât make sense for her to, since sheâs also not human and has seen plenty others like her. âIs your head alright?â
Lorelei looks up to see Deirdre standing there, and freezes like a deer in headlights. Her entire body is tense and coiled to strike, the need to flee ringing in her ears. Deirdre has seen too much, and Lorelei is stuck in this tiny bathroom. She stares up at it, absolutely petrified and mentally bracing herself for the worst... but nothing happens.
No screams. No panic. No aggression. It's just standing there, examining her as if this is a normal occurence. Did it just say something?
"...What?" Lorelei finally breathes, raising her head slightly to look at Deirdre properly. Since it's already heard her speak, she makes no attempt to hide her natural voice anymore, a haunting tone like a choir speaking in unison.
She's still shaking like a leaf, but warily begins to relax as she processes what she was just asked, offering a small nod.
"My head is... fine, I think."
She decides to put in some effort of emoting, and furrows her eyebrows a bit, making a vaguely worried expression. It seems to pick up on her probably feeling nervous around it, so it takes off its shades to show her its eyes are an unnatural black. The only reason it had been wearing them was because it didnât want to freak her out.
It has no idea what she is, but she doesnât seem dangerous, so itâs not going to make much of a fuss over this.
âOkay..â It gets up to get out of her face, then it offers a hand to help her stand. âCome sit, I can fix you something to drink if you want.â
When the shades come off, Lorelei's eyes widen as she looks into inky black pools similar to her own. She's never seen a colour like it anywhere but in mirrors.
She's stunned for a moment. It's a lot to take in. But soon enough, she accepts the extended hand, allowing herself to be led back out of the bathroom.
She plops herself down on the couch, eyes still wide and head still spinning from the events that led her to this point. Despite the revelation of Deirdre's inhuman nature, its hospitality still comes as a surprise to her. She's not used to it.
"Thank you, um..." she gulps, her body suddenly remembering how worn down it is as she leans against the armrest. "Water would be nice."
Deirdre nods, stepping into her small kitchen. Lorelei can still see her from where sheâs sitting. It grabs a solo cup from the counter, then takes a pitcher from the fridge, one of the ones with a filter in it, and pours her drink.
She comes back over and hands the cup to her, before sitting on the opposite end of the couch. It watches her for a moment, studying her. Then it finally speaks up. âYou donât need to tell me any of your business, but I would like to know if anyone saw you or if you might try to eat me.â
She doesnât sound like sheâs afraid, quite the opposite. She sounds bored.
Lorelei carefully accepts the solo cup, bringing it to her lips with a shaky grip and downing the whole thing immediately.
Setting the cup down, her stomach turns with guilt and nausea at Deirdre's nonchalant inquiry.
"I didn't mean to, I-..." she begins, but trails off as she notices Deirdre's apparent lack of fucks to give. Lorelei can't decide if she's relieved or upset by its indifference to her situation, but ultimately decides to take a breath, and just tell it what it wants to know. It's the least she can do, seeing as it's been shockingly accommodating.
"No, I won't do that. And I don't think anyone else saw me."

She frowns when she hears how hoarse she sounds. It only makes it question what it was she was doing out here. And how she couldnât hear her if she were making some kind of noise.
âLorelei. âŠHow about we save talking til we get inside?â Deirdre glances at her as it steps over a pile of twigs and toward a half-empty parking lot. Thankfully, there arenât many people around the apartments, besides a man loitering near a corner, loudly talking on his phone.
âMy place is just up here.â She motions for Lorelei to follow, and makes her way toward the metal staircase. The steps look incredibly old and rickety, like theyâd creak with every slight movement.
And follow she does.
Lorelei scurries up the stairs behind it, fidgeting with her drawstrings as they make their way to the apartment. She's visibly nervous as they stop in front of the door, and accidentally bites her lip. It starts bleeding immediately, but she quickly flicks it away with her tongue, hoping it will go unnoticed.
She barely considers taking in the scenery, too focused on its mention of her talking. Did she mess up? Did it hear something it wasn't supposed to? Still, she tries to keep it together and be polite.
Deirdre digs her keys from her pocket and unlocks the door. For the split second theyâre out, Lorelei can see a few other keys and what looks to be a rabbit shaped keychain attached to the ring.
The door creaks open as it steps inside and flips on a switch. Itâs quite cramped, as to be expected by the seemingly cheap complex, but itâs clear she had made it her own; the tiny dining/living room is decorated with dark furniture and whatâs probably a bunch of old antiques. In the corner, near the outdated television, is a sleek black electric guitarâpossibly the only ânewâ thing in the whole flat.
It tosses the keys onto the dining table and steps aside so Lorelei can get in, sighing.
âThe bathroomâs over there if you want to get cleaned up, door on the right. Face wash is either on the tub or sink, and there should be clean towels, hopefully..â She nods her head to the worldâs smallest âhallwayâ, which is really just three doors squished together.
Lorelei nods idly as she takes in the space, examining the details of the room, potential escape routes, that sort of thing. She takes Deirdre's directions as permission, and slinks away into the bathroom without a word.
The sound of the tap turns into an idle buzz as Lorelei frantically scrubs away at the surface of her sleeves. It's hard to believe this sweater was blue at one point, given how firmly the stains seem to cling to every fiber. Thin trails of blood swirl around her hands in the sink, slowly draining into the void beneath.
For a moment, she stops. Mesmerised. Her pupils widen to an unnatural degree, nearly engulfing her scleras as she takes in the sight and scent with an instinctive fascination.
Fortunately, she manages to smack herself before it gets too out of hand. A quick shake of her head and her eyes are back to normal. Human-like.
She splashes her face with the water, finally ridding herself of the unsightly gore drying around her mouth. Running her fingers through the dried clumps in her hair until the strands are soft and white again, the sound of the tap becomes a grounding white noiseâ keeping her mind firmly in the present with each unsteady exhale.
Get a grip get a grip get a grip
Sheâs left alone for quite a while. Or, at least, it feels that way. The bathroom is rather quiet, save for the faint hum from the lights and the sound of the tap running.
Like the rest of the apartment, itâs very cramped, but also far messier. The sink counter is chipped, makeup and hair gels are strewn about, and some near-empty soap bottles litter the tub. The only things actually put where they should be are the towels folded neatly on a thin wire rack.
A knock at the door snaps her out of her daze, and she can hear Deirdreâs monotone voice muffled behind it. âEverything okay?â
The knock at the door is so startling that she stumbles backwards and loses her balance. The panicked yelp she lets out is short but shrill, like nails on a chalkboard and shattering glass all at once.
Lorelei flails clumsily as she falls, sending tubes and palettes clattering alongside her. An unpleasant thud resonates through the cramped space as she hits the floor, knocking the back of her head on the edge of the tub. It sounds worse than it feels, but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt, and the pain is enough to allow secrecy to slip her mind in this moment.
Lorelei slowly reaches up to cradle the back of her head, the slipping sleeve revealing a hint of something shiny on the back of her arm. Her unguarded wince reveals a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, gritted in pain.
"Ow..." she murmurs, but her lips don't moveâ and her voice crackles like a scratched vinyl being played from another room.
Whatever Deirdre has brought home is clearly not human.
The crunching of leaves and snapping of twigs intensify the frantic footsteps against the soil. Each step hurts, and every muscle begs for reprieve, but adrenaline forces her to push through.

It looks her over for an achingly long second, before sighing out more smoke. "âŠCare to tell me what happened? I won't rat you out, you seem jumpy enough already."
A moment of uncomfortable silence passes between them as the young woman blinks, the wariness in her body language slowly making way for disbelief and confusion. When encountering a clearly inhuman individual covered in blood, most people would be worried at best, and disgusted and afraid at worst. This detached, almost unimpressed response catches her off-guard.
Some of the dried blood flakes off her skin as she tries to wipe her mouth with the back of her hand, but it doesn't make much of a difference.
"I was... scared."
A vague answer, but it's what she can manage right now. She's still visibly shaken from her ordeal, her whole body trembling from a combination of stress and fatigue. As the adrenaline begins to make its way out of her system, she stumbles backwards, slumping against a tree and taking a seat on the ground to catch her breath.
Whatever weird moment that passes, Deirdre doesn't seem to notice. She can't help but feel bad for this woman, she's either very new to whatever happened to her, or she's just soft enough to feel immense guilt over it. No matter the reason, it would be wrong to leave her to deal with this alone. Or perhaps that was just it trying to justify hanging around to pry into someone else's personal life again.
Unfortunately for Lorelei, its face is pretty much impossible to read, so she wouldn't have any idea if it feels any kind of pity. She just seems cold. It isn't her fault, though, it's hard to function when you're made of dead meat.
"Okay, self-defense. You're fine." Deirdre shrugs, still speaking in that odd way as it rakes its fingers through its mess of short red hair. "You live somewhere in town? I could take you there, or to my place if you'd rather not walk around looking like you stepped out of Carrie. It isn't far."
It wouldn't be surprised if she declined. A stranger, who is a potential witness to whatever it is she's done, offering to take her somewhere? Incredibly untrustworthy.
Again, Lorelei takes a moment to just process. Blinking slowly, she carefully assesses the individual standing in front of her. She hasn't seen 'Carrie', but she gets the point it's making.
"Okay." is her reply. It's weak like the others, her voice carefully controlled as she pulls up the collar of her hoodie to conceal her mouth when she speaks.
Admittedly, she's never been a good judge of character, but she reasons that if this person meant harm they would already have done it, right...? Besides, the prospect of being clean is very tempting.
She reluctantly rises to her feet to follow its lead, despite her body aching in protest of the movement. Though she's somewhat wary of its oddities, she chooses not to comment on them, in the hopes that it won't ask about her own.
Deirdre gives her what looks to be a smile, in some kind of odd attempt to reassure her that she isnât going to hurt her or something. Itâs too sharp, though, and it just looks like sheâs trying to show off all her teeth, kind of like when a child smiles real wide.
It immediately drops it when it turns to walk through the trees, the leaves crunching under its boots. It was being honest when it said the walk wouldnât be too long; they both can already hear the sounds of the street, and a few buildings can be seen through the thin trees.
She stays quiet for a while, but evidently feels awkward from the silence and glances at Lorelei. âIâm Deirdre, by the way.â
Lorelei doesn't seem to register the sharpness in its smile. She instead returns it with a tight-lipped one of her own, as brief as Deidre's. She's not bothered at all by the silence as they walk, but begins to subconsciously shrink away once they approach the sound of civilisation.
As the streetlights beam down on them, she pulls the drawstrings on her hoodie tighter to keep her head covered, brushes a few strands of hair in front of her eyesâ doing what little she can to make herself less noticeable. She keeps her head low, only looking up once spoken to. One hand pulls up her hoodie over her mouth again, while the other is put on her chest to gesture to herself as she replies.
"Lo...re...lei."
Her voice is unusually strained; the way a singer's is when they struggle to hit a high note. It's more prominent than it was before, as if it's getting increasingly difficult to maintain.
The crunching of leaves and snapping of twigs intensify the frantic footsteps against the soil. Each step hurts, and every muscle begs for reprieve, but adrenaline forces her to push through.
