It's a busy night in the tavern Varyne has found himself in. There's a large group of people, seemingly here to celebrate something, all drunkenly chatting around the bar. The warm glow of candlelight illuminates the place, making it almost seem festive, in a way. A stark contrast to the cold snow outside.
The vampire has holed themself into a corner, a great spot to watch everyone while they idly swirl the booze in their hand. It's for show of course, the poor drunkards are what he's really after.
He watches one of them stumble out the door, and contemplates going after them. If he's quick, no one would notice a thing. No one has even spared him a glance, besides the bartender.
Unfortunately for him, however, his planning gets interrupted as someone walks up to his table. Their expression turns sour as they sit up, eyeing her.
"I'm not interested."
@ourladyoftears (hope this is alright for a starter)
The woman standing beside the table is... unusual to say the least. Her elegant silken ensemble looks out of place in both style and price. She smells faintly of osmanthus, and makes no attempt to hide her jewellery. What draws the most eyes, though, are the fiery orange fox ears sticking up from her hair, and the matching tail resting against the back of her skirt.
Despite having the bearing and finery of an aristocrat, she seems very comfortable in this seedy tavern with people of questionable repute. The stares don't seem to trouble her. In fact, she seems to enjoy the attention she draws.
Not at all put off by Varyne's cold greeting, she slips into the chair across from him with a charming smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. When she speaks, her voice is a low purr, soft as velvet.
"Ah, but you don't know what I'm offering yet."

He reaches for the bag and opens it, taking a few coins out to look at before letting them clink back into the pile. This would be more than enough for a horse, something he had been needing for a while now. If Jiayu can pay like this, then theyโll eventually be able to get better gear as well.
Unfortunately, Varyne canโt pass on this job.
He glances up at her again, catching her meaning, then quickly scan the room. He wants to be sure no one is listening in. โIt wonโt be a problem, I can assure you that. So long as you allow me time to hunt.โ
Jiayu nods, clearly pleased with his begrudging acceptance of the job.
"Naturally. Who am I to hold your vices against you?" she purrs, offering a tiny shrug.
"But more importantly, you accept. Good. When can you start?"
They hadnโt expected her to be so relaxed about it. A pleasant surprise.
Varyne shrugs. He doesnโt have anything important going on, and he was already planning on leaving this town eventually. โWhen do you need me to? If itโs soon, I must tell you that I donโt have a ride.โ

He doesn't return the smile, instead just pulling back his hood so she can see him better. Their hair is mostly gray, and there's a large scar, some kind of burn, covering a good portion of their face and head. Lines from age etch his gray skin.
His eyes, glowing a soft yellow, flick back over the crowd, before staring at her. Something about her smile, the way she talks, is already grating. They seem to have terrible luck, to run into people like this so often.
Varyne sets his glass down with a soft thud. Jiayu can see it's still full, completely untouched.
They mutter something about wanting to be alone under their breath, dragging a hand across their face. But then they cross their arms, leaning back as they squint at her. "...How much? I am not cheap."
For just a moment, Jiayu's little smile widens into a small grinโ showing off just a hint of her sharp canines. Her sensitive ears twitch as he mumbles, easily picking up the words but choosing to ignore them. Bitter as he may be about her intrusion on his evening, she's sure she senses a hint of resignation in his tone. Good.
"I assure you, serjo, payment will not be an issue." she chuckles, interlocking her fingers and leaning her elbows on the table. She notices the untouched drink almost immediately, but doesn't mention it.
Her smile drops as she continues, her tone now more businesslike than playful.
"I have need of a bodyguard. A proficient and experienced one. Your services come highly recommended." she begins. "Name your price, and I'll see it paid."
He raises an eyebrow at her use of phrase. He rarely hears anyone use that term for himself, not unless they're other elves. She certainly wasn't trying to be polite, she was only using it since she wants something out of him.
She gains their full attention from her change in demeanor. They won't lie, they don't particularly enjoy when these types of people hire them. Usually they are up to something shady and are difficult to work with, while those who appear meek are far more agreeable. Still, money is money, and he won't turn down a job that will pay decently.
It is uncomfortable, the mention of others 'recommending' him, he doesn't quite enjoy having his privacy intruded, but that was to be expected at this point.
Varyne rolls his lips, thinking. "No less than two-thousand gold upfront. The rest depends on how long you require my services and if we will be travelling."

They mutter something about wanting to be alone under their breath, dragging a hand across their face. But then they cross their arms, leaning back as they squint at her. "...How much? I am not cheap."
Varyne lets out a quiet sigh and leans forward a bit, taking the other glass. She lifts it to her lips, pausing to sniff at the liquid, before taking a sip. Of course nothing was wrong with it, why would there be, but she couldnโt be too careful. โThat doesnโt mean anything.โ
It tasted great, like honey on his tongue, possibly the best drink heโs had in centuries. Heโd have to find out what it was some other time.
He made a face at Naraโs prodding, clearly annoyed, but she did raise a good point. Why wouldnโt they just kill him? He was there, vulnerable and outmatched, yet all they did was imprison him.
He decided to worry about this later, though, as Nara continued asking her questions. They sat up more, idly swirling their drink around. โItโs been a few years, I believeโฆ But to answer your question, nothing you would find interesting, just mercenary work and whatever else pays well. Getting a horse is surprisingly a lot more difficult now.โ She takes another sip of her drink before setting it down. โIโll admit, Iโm still getting used to how much has changed, itโs a lot to take in.โ
Thereโs a pause, and he suddenly leans forward looking at her. Thereโs an intensity in his eyes, as if heโs trying to see into her brain. โโฆAnd Iโm still trying to figure you out. Why did you find me? I know you said so Iโd be indebted to you, but were you expecting something, or is it just loneliness?โ
Varyne surprisingly didnโt sound very judgmental; undeath was an isolating thing, and she wouldnโt blame her for seeking out another like herself. They did find her method of going about it veryโฆodd, though. If that were even the case.
It amuses Nara that Varyne still doesn't trust the drink, despite all of her reassurances. Varyne was smart, and that was a quality Nara respected. Though she had no ill intentions yet, it only made him more valuable in her eyes. It also tickled her that even though the other was hard to read, the moment she asked the right question, or pushed on the right topic, Varyne would respond in kind by the look on her face. They were getting somewhere.
"You're right. That all sounds dreadfully boring." She hides her smirk behind another sip. "You know, if you pick the right victims, they tend to have the best homes, abundant resources, and the most funds. You have eternity. Why waste it away working for others?" It didn't make any sense to her. Maybe she was still chasing her humanity? It begged the question of just how old Varyne was. They hadn't been too far off calling Nara a fledgling (despite how offended it made her).
His shift in posture and mood has her quirking a brow.
The question of loneliness hits her hard, and the cheeky smile she'd been flashing drops into a scowl. "Seems as though you have forgotten your manners in your old age." Taking another drink to compose herself, Nara tries to get back in control of the conversation. "I will concede that I had heard a strange rumor in the town nearby. That the undead was sealed beyond the stone walls. It was supposed to be a ghost story to make children behave, but most fables have some truth to them."
"I did not, however, expect to find a fellow vampire, staked. Tell me. How is it that when I pulled it from your body you didn't burst into dust? It seemed to just immobilize you." There was something different about Varyne. Or perhaps, not every vampire had the same traits? That was definitely something that Nara found interesting.
"It isn't a waste if they pay well. Money, information, whatever they have to offer makes it worth it. Not to mentionโfeeding off the wrong people is incredibly dangerous for our kind, especially for those of us who aren't as 'gifted' as yourself." Seems they're actually fine with admitting their own weaknesses, shockingly. Varyne had never done particularly well with magic, the most he'd been able to do with it, even before death, was make sparks between his fingers. He barely even tried to use the abilities gifted to him by this 'curse' of his.
She always told herself it was because it wasn't necessary. After all, why do a bunch of fancy tricks when you can force the enemy down with your own hands? But, truly, he is still disgusted by what he is, even after all these years.
Varyne purses their lips at her comment and reclines back again. Their posture is annoyingly lax. "My apologies, I didn't mean to offend."
They narrow their eyes as Nara retells how she learned of them, tilting their head to the side like a dog. She knew there would've been talk of her, there had been before she'd been entombed, but the fact they were still passing rumors of her was unnerving. They had hoped history had moved on by now, and forgotten them, to allow them to walk unburdened, but clearly that was foolish on their part.
"My blood is... Old, as you'd maybe put it. I still have the same weaknesses as you, however some won't kill me." There's a slight pause, and Varyne sighs. "Of course, it might have something to do with the nature of my embrace, but I admittedly don't have much knowledge on the topic. I'm afraid you're about as lost as I."
Their sire wasn't much help when it came to the ins and outs of vampiric information. She only ever told Varyne what he needed to know, and that was that. He also just wasn't ever curious, he didn't want to know anything about embracing others. He couldn't do that to another person.
Varyne simply blinked. She didnโt understand why Nara was so ecstatic to have her here, or why she was so fascinated in her, it made her uneasy. Still, there was no harm in humoring her, it wasnโt like she was holding him hostage or anything.
After a second of two of watching her flit around and listening to her blabber on, Varyne sat on the couch, finally. For some reason sitting felt vulnerable, but they just crossed their legs and folded their hands in their lap. He didnโt even glance at whatever drink she brought out, he didnโt trust it, instead he kept his gaze on her.
โThereโs not much to tell. You saw it, it was just a stone room with a coffin inside.โ He clicked his tongue, his eyebrows furrowed as he attempted to remember all the details. This had been many, many years ago, and unfortunately some parts of his memory was blurry. โโฆ.There was some kind of hunting party after me, I believe. They had found me at an inn, took me by surprise, and decided decapitating me would be too much of a mess for the owner to handle.โ
Though stated plainly, he sounded embarrassed that it had even happened at all. Of course, Nara could probably tell they were leaving out some details, but whether that was because they didnโt remember or didnโt want to tell her was unclear.
Maybe she wasn't outright holding him hostage, but Nara would be rather cross if Varyne decided to leave at this point. They had come all this way! She'd already uncorked this bottle. Even now Nara was irked when she completely disregarded the glass. Frowning, she raises her own to her lips, taking a sip to show it was fine. "Really, Varyne? If I wanted you dead, I'd have been done with it already."
Or at least, she would have tried.
Taking in the other's vague story, Nara looks anything but convinced. "So you would lead me to believe that a group of hunters went through all the trouble of hauling you out in the middle of the night to that stone prison instead of ending you? To what? Have you starve to death and go mad? Either they're completely deranged or you're leaving out some details." Swirling her glass, she idly taps it.
"But I'm sure I will find out in due time." The smile that pulls at her lips is devious. "What have you been doing with yourself since you've been free? I'm not even sure how many years it's been since we last met." Laughing, she waves dismissively at the other woman. "No need to keep track of time anymore."

He simply sighs and looks to the ground as he follows her. The way she spoke to them was aggravating, and her implying they could possibly be anything more than acquaintances almost pissed them off, but they kept quiet. They were silent the whole walk there, mostly mulling over the thoughts in their head.
Half of her thought this might be a trap; some weird way to kill herโthen again, Nara seemed capable, she wouldnโt doubt that sheโd attempt it before if she wanted to. She did mention wanting to use him for something, and whatever that was, he didnโt want any part of it.
When inside, Varyne makes a face at the extremely stereotypical decor, swiftly hiding it as he feigns itching his jaw. Heโs never met another vampire who was subtle, but heโs also never met very many vampires. Still, gaudiness aside, the place seemed roomy enough, and she certainly wouldnโt say no to having somewhere to rest her legs. Heโs been on his feet for far too long.
They frown at her tone, but donโt say anything about it, instead inclining their head. โThank you, Nara. Is there a room I could stay in?โ
"Oh finally! Some appreciation. I didn't know you had it in you, Varyne," Nara smirks. "There are many rooms you can stay in. But sit. I insist." That definitely teetered on the edge of a threat. Nara gestures toward the living room, before using her inhuman speed to dart into the cellar for a bottle of aged blood she'd been saving for a special occasion. Returning in a flash, she pours two glasses and sets them on the coffee table, before sitting herself.
There was something about killing mortals that made her energized. Giddy even? And poor Varyne was on the receiving end of it. There was added excitement because she was hosting. It had been AGES since she'd had proper guests. "Now you must tell me more about this tomb of yours. You've made me rather curious." The vampiress was always after information. Information was power, and as one could guess, Nara loved having power in all forms.
Varyne simply blinked. She didnโt understand why Nara was so ecstatic to have her here, or why she was so fascinated in her, it made her uneasy. Still, there was no harm in humoring her, it wasnโt like she was holding him hostage or anything.

Though stated plainly, he sounded embarrassed that it had even happened at all. Of course, Nara could probably tell they were leaving out some details, but whether that was because they didnโt remember or didnโt want to tell her was unclear.
God, this woman talked a lot. He hated how she said his name, it felt like something crawling under his skin. And did she really have to exalt herself so much? He's met lords who were more humble than Nara.
Varyne huffed, swearing under her breath as she stopped to consider her offer. It would be safer to have somewhere secluded to stay, rather than risk getting caught by hunters again, or having to escape the sun. This would mean having to be around Nara for much longer than she wanted, though, but she could survive that. If she doesn't end up attempting to wring her neck later.
He stepped aside, and motioned for her to lead. "...This does not make us allies."
It was clear from the huffing and cursing that she was getting a rise out of Varyne, and unfortunately for her, that only made Nara want to prod further. There was also the added satisfaction that by agreeing to stay with her, Nara had, in some twisted way, 'won'. Clapping in mock joy, Nara happily takes the lead. "Of course not, Varyne dear~ At least, not yet..." Did she really expect to win him over? No. But she hadn't decided her intentions just yet.
The safehouse was off the beaten trail, tucked carefully in the forest a ways away from the port town. It wasn't fully inconspicuous, lavish and ornamented, just as one would expect from Nara's tastes. You'd have to really be looking for it to find it, foliage growing wildly on and around the building, but once you saw it, you knew this was no ordinary home. The interior was much gaudier than the outside, blacks, golds and reds making the inside a gothic palace compared to the nature on the exterior. All of the curtains were drawn, and Nara was quick to light some garish candelabras before turning her attention to Varyne.
"Come, make yourself at home. You should find comfort and safety here at least until tomorrow night." It's clear the words are tinged in something other than hospitality.
He simply sighs and looks to the ground as he follows her. The night had been on for some time, the air chilled and nipping at the skin just enough to keep a layer on. From outside a tavern Dariya had wandered, gauging the area before entering the building. It was quaint, quiet, one may even describe the place as dingy; it was not a high class establishment by any means.
She slipped in through the door, sharp wine-red eyes taking note of her surroundings. The womanโs lip curled for a brief moment, โtil her face returned to its resting position of stoicism as she walked to the bar and heeded the barkeep for a drink. Whisky, from the sounds of it.
Dariya was not much to look at, beyond being an odd sort of figure. A white coat hung from her lanky frame, beneath that a knitted sweater and red scarf. She was all-around well put together, even as a woman who had been traveling for some time if the pack on her back had anything to say about it.
{ For @ourladyoftears }
She was allowed a few short minutes to herself, until she felt a chill, like someone was watching her; thankfully, since the place was so empty, it was easy to find who it was. In the far corner, seated alone at a booth, was a man. He was leaned forward in his seat, hovering over an open book with a drink in hand. It was difficult to see their features under the hood they were wearing, but she could see one of their eyes glowing in the dim room, staring at her.
The elf was covered from the neck down; the armor she wore was simple, but looked like it would protect her fine enough, and around her shoulders was a large cape made of gray fur. He had thick leather gloves on, which strangely had metal tips at the ends of each finger, almost resembling short claws. There was practically no color to be found on them, aside from their dark red hair, which even then was almost entirely swallowed by streaks of white. It didn't look like she had anything else with her aside from the book--there were no weapons in sight, and no bags of any kind.
She didn't move at all, only inclining her head slightly. It's almost as if they're expecting Dariya to walk over.
Varyne didn't know why he did this, the whole point of him being here was to scope out the place, and see who he could potentially get away with feeding from before hopping to the next town. But, something told them she was someone who needed help.
Dariya was not one to deny her own interest, sliding coin over to the barkeep with a wave to keep any of the spare change. She plucked the glass up and gave the drink a quick sniff and a drink, a small nod once she swallowed. Glass in hand, the woman wandered over towards Varyne.
Up closer there was not much different about her. A pale countenance, dark red eyes. Brown hair that neared black, with a thick grey streak through it even if she still seemed a bit young for such. The scent of her reeked of alcohol, yet it was less than that of a drunk and more of someone who valued sterilization and cleanliness over all.
She slid into the seat across from him, taking another sip. โYou look like you need conversation, da?โ Dariya asked, her voice low and thick with an accent that sounded like it may be from some northern type of region.
The sterile scent nearly made Varyne lightheaded, but she fortunately kept a straight face as Dariya sat down. The woman seemed to be some sort of doctor, judging by the smell and coat. What she was doing here of all places, he couldnโt tell.
โPerhaps.. No one here is good for it.โ His voice was low and gravely, and his accent sounded unfamiliar. As they spoke, pointed teeth flashed in their mouth. She closed her book, tilting her head once more as she studied her face, as if in thought. โYou seem out of place, like youโre lost. Are you traveling somewhere?โ
Upon closer inspection, she could see how translucent his skin was, and a scar, most likely from a burn, snaked up her neck and across her eye. His eyes were almost entirely red, with yellows branching out from the center like a burst of sun. Notโฆentirely typical of most dark-elvesโat least, the yellows werenโt, they seemed more in-line with the undead.

Varyne motions a clawed hand to their discarded meals. He had helped her fight and got her food, that was more than enough, surely. "Then my debt has been paid. I do not plan on spending more time with you, nor will you use me for whatever it is you had planned."
She spat out the last words, her eyes narrowed at the other. She wont allow herself to be made a weapon for anyone, not again. Especially not for someone like Nara. He would much prefer being imprisoned.
He raised his hood once more, then made his way for the door. "Good night, Nara."
"Oh, come now, Varyne," the way her name falls off of Nara's lips is poisonous. "I have already freed you from any debts to me when you assisted me with the hunters. No plans are devised. Just a morbid curiosity to understand you. You see, it's been quite some time since I've associated with others of our kind. You should feel honored that you have my attention."
As he turns for the door, Nara finds herself annoyed, but she humors them, following behind. "Is your age showing again? The night is still so young!" A haughty laugh, before she continues. "And you said your camp is nearby, yes? Why not spend the rest of the evening and the daytime in one of my secluded safe houses?" Nara was arrogant, but she always had a contingency. "Surely it would be safer for us to stay together while the humans recoup and plan their counterattack? And consider it my way of paying the tab for the fabulous meal~" Though she was devious, she had a strange sense of making things even between herself and those she dubbed... closer to her equal.
The foreign words reach her ear, but the meaning is lost. It was clear to Nara that it was some ritual of sorts for the dead... But why bother? If they were human, maybe she would have understood. Though she hadn't been all that keen on rites and religion before she'd been turned. Now? Well, if it turned out there truly was some higher being, she knew that the sins she'd committed would lead her to a fiery fate.
It didn't matter. Nara didn't intend on dying anytime soon.
"With how useful you've made yourself the first time," she grins, stalking around Varyne to face her. "I'm not all too worried about any hunters. I doubt they've discovered the bodies even. Ask me again tomorrow night. Maybe my answer will change." An implied invitation to spend more of her everlasting time with the woman. The growl of his tone only makes her smile more devious. In a weird way, Nara liked both to be provoked, and to do the provoking. "Your tomb?" Stifling a laugh, she raises a hand to her lips, carefully wiping the blood from the corners of her mouth. "A tomb is for the dead. I had assumed it a prison... And still you have yet to thank me. Though to answer your question, call it curiosity... and the desire to have you indebted to me."
Varyne lumbers inside and shuts the door behind herself, hissing to Nara, "Are you trying to wake the whole town--?" They're interrupted by a shrill scream, and standing in the bedroom's doorway is the wife. It appears she was either just in bed, or getting ready to be, and in her hand is a pitiful looking dagger. Her eyes are as wide as saucers as she watches Nara feed off her husband, and instead of trying to help, she runs toward the door furthest from the two vampires. Unfortunately she isn't quick enough, and Varyne swiftly grabs her by the wrist, tearing into it with her teeth as she covers the woman's mouth with her hand.
The blood flows past her lips, intoxicating her in more ways than one. Nara loses herself, normal calculating mind taken over by instincts that she couldn't control. It was hard finding good meals, so it was moments like these she savored.
Gluttony. She bleeds the man dry, dropping his lifeless body to the floor, sharply inhaling through her nose. It takes her a moment to come back to reality, before she focuses on Varyne and the human woman. "Ah. So you DO use your teeth." She sneers, laughing. "I was wondering if you'd use your dagger again. Though, it would be such a waste of good blood."
"As for the town. Let them wake. What will they do against the two of us?" Despite her almost being killed earlier that evening, she was still arrogant as ever.
Varyne lets out an annoyed snarl, Nara was beginning to get on his last nerve, but he can't let it get to him, he has to stay calm.
Once she feels she's had enough, she lets her victim crumple to the ground, blood dripping down her chin.
He wipes at his mouth and kneels beside the body, whispering something in another tongue, one Nara may not recognize. A prayer. An old habit she's had since she was turned, her gods no longer answer her, so it has become more of a formality. A way to ease her conscience so she can live with what she had become.
When he is done, he finally stands, adjusting the old wolf pelt around his shoulders.
"And if there happens to be more hunters? We do not know who could be here, it would be a foolish thing to risk.. It is better if we are quiet, but I do have some questions, while we are here." He glances to Nara, his yellow eyes narrowed in the dim room. Her voice is gravely, one might liken it to an animal growl.
"Why did you let me out of my tomb?"

โYou have to be the most fastidious vampire Iโve met..โ Varyne mutters this under her breath, just loud enough for Nara to hear. He keeps his eyes to the ground as they walk, only ever glancing up when he hears the sound of shutters closing. Having eyes on them certainly wasnโt ideal, and she tugs the hood of her cape back up to have some anonymity.
He takes a breath, obviously trying to keep himself from getting too snappy with Nara. โI only started watching them recently; they seemed like an easy target, and I have no reason to return here.โ She glances up at the windows they pass, lowering her voice slightly in case someone might hear. Heโs aware of how people are in his presence โ typically with them feeling threatened in some way โ and he can only imagine how much worse it is with another vampire beside him, making them even more suspicious. โI know the wife stays in the bedroom. She keeps the curtains drawn, though, so Iโve never been able to see what she does. As for the husbandโฆ He tends to stay up late. Sometimes he steps outside to check on the horses, but other than that, heโs either in the living space or kitchen.โ
They continue walking, and up ahead Nara can see it; a large cottage made of neat stones with a tiled roof. Some distance away is what is probably a servantโs quarters, built similarly only smaller, and off to the side of the house is a stable with two horses inside. One looks to Nara and snorts, but doesnโt seem to really care that sheโs here.
Thereโs a small flickering in one window, probably from a fireplace.
"Fastidious, hmm?" The smile that spreads across her face is devilish. "My, my. High praise. Flattery will get you everywhere with me." Perhaps she could still cash in on that debt. Perhaps she'd let Varyne live. It would be such a shame to smother out one of her own kind. And as long as he kept feeding her burning ego, Nara would consider keeping him around as a sort of... pet? She decided to mull it over.
Nara takes in the information from the other woman, nodding and carefully committing it to memory. The sight of the cottage would have had her heart racing if it hadn't been stopped a century before. There was still excitement over the thrill of the hunt, but the only visual signs were her parted lips and salivating. "This will be easy," Nara starts, eyeing the horse. While she saw humans as insignificant insects, she'd never lost her love and fascination with animals. Maybe she would take them as her own when they were finished...
She doesn't wait for an invitation. There was no need. With inhuman strength, she pushed the front door almost off the hinges, the sudden change in pressure causing a few candles to go out, leaving only the glow of the hearth to light the room. The husband was just where Varyne had described. Sitting in a chair in the living space, glass of wine in hand. He turns to look at the intruder, only to be awestruck. Nara had been beautiful before the change, but now, that beauty had been amplified tenfold. Inhaling deeply, Nara moaned in pleasure. "It's been so long..." Eyes glinting red, she used her speed to stand before the man, clawed fingers lifting him from the chair with one arm. She can't help herself. She's too hungry. The glass of wine hadn't even hit the floor before she was sinking her teeth into his neck.
