There's one part of me that wants to play vintage story with other people so so bad. And another part that is forced to admit that about 50% of what I do in game is sail my boat around to reveal more of the map while I knit a sweater IRL, which is not especially social

It's not like I've tried to learn a huge number of languages, but from my limited experience Japanese does feel notably easy, moreso than any Indo-European language at least. It has a small inventory of very common sounds; it's agglutinative so it's not like the grammar is the simplest imaginable, but it still has a minimal case system and the conjugations are almost shockingly regular; and this is obviously subjective but the grammar and sentence structure overall just feels very intuitive to me. There's just the smallllllll issue that it happens to have possibly the most complex and irregular system of writing ever devised by man, certainly the most of any widely-spoken extant language. Balance in all things, I suppose.

#i think this is a pretty fair assessment!#japanese sometimes gets tossed around as 'the hardest language to learn' and it's mostly unfounded #it's just that the difficulty curve LOOKS bananas. high barrier to entry with the writing system but the sounds and grammar are regular #if you can get past learning to read and write the basics it isn't especially difficult to study to an intermediate level #students grouse about causative + passive + causative-passive as well as keigo bc they are so contextual #but frankly English can be just as contextual. It's just not as codified #not to say it's totally easy mind you. getting my n2 cert took blood sweat and tears #it's just probably not as hard as you expect if you've never given it a shot
