detective/partner narratives (true detective season 1, mindhunter, etc.) generally understand that acts of particularly senseless and brutal violence basically hollow out the center of the world and that this hole exerts its own kind of obsessive gravity. they also generally understand that the shared trauma that comes from bearing constant witness to violence binds people (in the context of the genre it’s mostly men) together in strange ways. what most of them miss however is that being a detective is really gay
