âbalthus, quickly. your lunch is on the line here. call it: heads or tails.â the coin is already spinning in the air just as theyâve opened their mouth and itâs been caught and tucked into a fist by the time theyâre done speaking. yuri waits expectantly, one brow raised and their other hand planted on their hip. their closed fistâand the fate of lunch, apparentlyâhovers between them.
whichever one he ends up saying doesnât matter in the end, though. the outcome remains the same: yuri opens their palm and itâs facing the exact side he called out. âfancy that,â they comment idly before tucking it away, already heading off with a wave over their shoulder for him to follow. âcome along, then. have your pick of any restaurant on my dime.â
happy birthday is never spoken in such specific words. and there are too many bounty hunters after his head that they suppose a few mysteriously never coming along to bother him again wouldnât be anything worthy of much note. the sole acknowledgement that strikes closest to the heart of the matter is the sheathed dagger they set down on the table between them at the end of their meal.
âfound it recently,â they say as they flag down a waiter for their bill. stole it, they really mean. but regardless of whether or not it used to belong to some hotshot debt collector that wonât be a problem for him anymore before coming into their possession, âapparently itâs some kind of antique, a ceremonial blade from way back. no clueâyou know i donât care much outside of how well it cuts.â a shrug to punctuate as they slide it across the table toward him. âpretty well, if you care, but a bit too flashy for my tastes. i figure youâll get more out of it than me.â
âthough, no matter how tight you end up on gold, i wouldnât pawn it off if i were you,â they add mildly. joking? serious? as always with yuri, their face gives nothing away. âmight get another bounty hunter or ten after you if you do.â
Of course Yuri's got another bet for him. Ha!
A smarter man might've called it off by now. But here's the secret that Balthus knows for a fact: 99% of gamblers quit before they make it big. Despite everything, his mama didn't raise a quitter, and there's a giant grin spreading across his face as her crosses his arms over his chest. As always, he calls it and waits with bated breath as Yuri flips it-- there's a flutter in his chest that he often feels before defeat befalls him, but this time... he blinks in surprise as he notices that he did, indeed, call it correctly. When his eyes flicker up to study Yuri's expression in the brief moment before they turn on their heel, Balthus probably looks a little confused.
... But he's not a man to turn down a victory, no sir! So falling into step with Yuri's pace is only second nature-- for both his meal... and for the way that they've learned to match each other over the years. Today, that makes one more to be added to their tally. As many more as Yuri would want of his.
All you can eat buffet is his choice, of course. Who wouldn't? Best bang for your buck, as he'd say. The dagger proffered to him at the end of their meal catches him with a mouthful of food that he struggles to swallow before running his fingers over the sheath-- even a fool could tell that the craftsmanship is insanely good. Gently prying it from the leather, the sheen of the blade has him whistling in awe at how sharp it remains for an antique.
Or so Yuri says. Maybe there's more to it than that, but maybe there isn't. Whatever boss wants him to know-- he will.
"Found it, huh?" Balthus chuckles as he pulls it out completely, flipping it in his palm to run his thumb along the flat side of the blade. No accidentally slicing his fingers open here. "A catch for sure. Now, I'm no blade collector or anyone that's really into the specifics and whatnot... but whoever made this has got talent. Hilt looks older, sheath looks older-- but the blade doesn't look like it's gotten any wear and tear on it."
He jerks his head up to look at Yuri with a hint of a defiant expression, frowning. "Pawn it? You kiddin' me? No way. There's some things a man can't give up. This? This is stayin' on me for good now." Of course, all it takes is a quick motion to return it to its sheath, and a few beats of fumbling to attach it to his belt. Only then does he flash a brilliant smile, along with a softening of his tone when he speaks.
"... Thanks, boss. For this, and for everything else. Know that I've got your back-- and I know you've got mine."
