jace-lamonteâ:
They smiled at him, and their eyes flashed gold. âWe got this,â they told him right before he took off for the booth again. Jace turned and wadded up one of the napkins, stuffing it into one ear. With their free hand, they pulled out their phone and hurried to the bathroom to make their call. They fought their way through and met Gabe there, quickly filling him in on what was about to happen.Â
âGreat,â he said, wiping sweat and blood from his brow with his forearm. He looked exhausted. âAnd the police arenât answering?â
Jace, who still had their cell pressed to their ear, shook their head worriedly. âTheyâre probably overrun with distress calls.â Gabeâs attention went to the hall, his eyes a little distant. Tae had started to sing, but they were too far away to be totally affected. Jace put their other makeshift earplug in. âHey, asshole,â they banged the crowbar against the wall and Gabe snapped out of it. âEyes up! Have you seen Shay?âÂ
Gabe shook his head, eyes widening, âSheâs not with you?â
She was in the crowd. She had been hiding under one of the tables near the dancefloor, only now she was glassy eyed and pressed to the far wall with all the other innocents, helplessly watching the vampires lumber toward Tae.
taeâs eyes glowed gold as he sang. the magic coursing through him worked. he saw the others come back inside. good, gabe was safe. now they had to find shay, and then... what? if no one was coming, was he supposed to keep the vampires here all night? he could perform for a couple hours, sure, but any longer than that and he would definitely lose his voice, magic or no. he gestured at jace and gabe, sweeping his arm in a wide motion, wordlessly asking to move all the non-vampires into the next room. at least from there, theyâd be out of immediate danger. then they could figure out what to do with the vampires. he wondered if he could lull them to sleep.Â
his song took a turn. it went soft and slow, dreamlike. first he had them all lay down on the ground, curled up like a pack of vicious dogs too tired too fight. he tried to work a lullaby into it, but he wasnât even sure if vampires slept. at the very least, he could sooth their rage. when he finally released them from the song, hopefully, they would be too disoriented and too relaxed to try to kill them all again. but, he wouldnât stop singing until he could be sure the others were safe.
