my favorite genre of asoiaftwt

the way both buffy and angel brood all the time about how they're starcrossed lovers that can't be together because of their circumstances, how angel could never allow himself to be happy with her and so they stay separated but still longing for each other etc etc BUT. but. they're not EVER given a storyline in which they have to investigate and exhaust all possible avenues into turning their situation around. it feels (TO ME) like this situation presents itself to them in the form of an obstacle that has no immediate solution and they're like "well. what can we do? anyways." like oh i can't be with her during the day? god this is so hard, it's unsustainable we can't live like this! it's an impossible love! meanwhile you got spike running around during daytime with a blanket covering him just to be in the same area as buffy. oh i can't fully be in a relationship with her because i would lose my soul if i was happy for just one second (apparently during sex only btw)? god that's tragic and doomed and i'm gonna have to avoid her for the rest of my life. meanwhile you got spike going to who the fuck knows where to see who the fuck knows who in order to go through cosmic levels of psychological and physical torture just to do the impossible and EARN back his soul. which is something that nobody seems to know was even possible until he did it. which makes me wonder how many spells and trials could exist in the buffyverse that would help angel... what? permanently break a curse and keep his soul? oh that was all? damn. within the context of all the villains buffy has beaten throughout this show, including the very first evil and a goddess... a curse can't be permanently broken? i haven't seen angel but do they explore this? does he even try? there are so many compromises and sort-of-solutions they could've figured out in order to be together if they truly wanted to that it drives me CRAZY that they just. don't. worst part is that it feels like the only reason they don't figure it out is because both the writers and the characters themselves LIKE the tragedy of it all. that is how it's popularly known after all isn't it? the gloomy drama of the vampire and the slayer. but spike and buffy are vampire and slayer too and if you were to tell spike that he couldn't be with buffy romantically because of x and y reason he would first. spit in your face. second. try to prove you wrong. if for ANY reason you were right and he really could not be with buffy romantically in any way he would decide to just. stay around. help her out, be there for her, even if it has to be in the background of her life. because he loves her from afar, from up-close and from the sides, regardless of whether she returns his love or not. which is how you should love the person you claim is the love of your life btw
