Ryland stored away the information in the back of his mind. At 17 weeks the baby would weight about five ounces and be about five inches from head to toe. Cartilage would be starting to form into bone and eyebrows and eyelashes would just be starting to grow. In terms of the mother, gestational diabetes can start to develop and balance begins to be affected by the change in the center of mass.

But none of that was important at the moment. Right then, gaining her trust and setting her mind and body at ease were important. “I am. We both are.” He let his gaze move to Galen. “You’re very safe here.” He didn’t strictly know if that was true because he didn’t strictly know what she was on the run from. It could be from family, It could be from The Midnight Rebellion . It could be from the mob for all he knew. But whatever it was they would protect her. He had no doubt that Galen would keep the girl safe even if it meant keeping her there in his home. If it was the law, well…. they’d have to deal with that when the time came.

He felt her flinch and if he wasn’t so focused on trying to keep her calm, he might have flinched himself.  It wasn’t exactly helpful to show her anything but comfort, even if it meant his own.  He could do this.  He would for her.  If his ideas were correct…  He would try even harder.  He would hide her away.  Moving, Galen went to stand at the side of the bed before kneeling next to it.  His bed wasn’t that high so he only had to look up slightly to lock eyes with her.  “You can stay here for as long as you need.  My wards are strong… I’ve kept them around the building for years.”  It wasn’t something he necessarily talked about but they were there, swirling around his ivy, with it.  “You are safe…”  He was serious, green eyes not leaving her own.  “For now… why don’t you get some rest?  We can talk later.”

The tears were heartbreaking as was the fear that he still saw shining from her eyes. He kept his tone low and easy as he spoke. “Hi Darcy.” He took her wrist in his hand, but only stroked the inside where the pulse could be felt not holding on. The last thing the girl probably needed was to feel even the slightest bit trapped. 

“I think you’re right. I don’t detect any broken bones or internal injuries. Now, what I can do with my magic is limited so let me know how you’re feeling. I’m going stay here with Galen in case anything changes.” He took a deep breath and then decided the topic of her pregnancy. “The baby is fine as well. How far along are you?” 

He shoved it all down, knowing that it would only bubble up later.  He’d take care of it later.  Maybe he’d revisit Sawyer if he had too much trouble with it.  Hitting up the other man two nights in a row wouldn’t be the absolute worst thing.  But that was a thought for later and this was now.  Instead of saying anything, he brushed his hand over the back of her head and neck, a soothing motion he would have appreciated if he were in Darcy’s place.  He would sit there and try to be as comforting as possible.  Medicine wasn’t his strong point, not even when it came to healing.  His healing potions were fine but… It wasn’t anything like what the other man could do.  Ryland was quickly becoming a person to admire for skills that Galen would never be able to touch.
