long story short: will moving a long-finned betta to a smaller tank help curb fin biting?
rose is in a well-established 10g tank and is definitely biting (I am positive it isnt rot - thereās new growth in some patches). heās a doubletail (i didnt think his fins would grow so much when i got him). iām going to get indian almond leaves asap - currently dont have a way to buy things online - but my plakat, bee, is in a 5 gallon. i know bee would appreciate the extra space. both filters are pretty low-output and tbh i wouldnt feel comfortable baffling them further.
would moving rose stress him more? or would it be easier to move around in a shallower tank?
i havent changed anything yet because i want to hear some other opinions.
i work in a pet store. a woman was looking at our bettas and asked me whether one was male or female. i told her that they were all male, because they are- our company only orders male bettas. she looked at me incredulously and pointed at one and asked, āeven this one?ā i was like āā¦yes, why?ā āitās pink, though! why is the male fish pink?ā i swear, she was borderline angry at me. i didnāt know how to explain that fish genetics donāt adhere to human gender roles
Hey. Iām planning on moving soon, and have been thinking about getting a fish. Itās about a 3 hour drive to the new town, and was worried about transport for the fish with that extended time. But Iām not sure they have a pet store in this new town, itās pretty small. So tips for transport or should I just wait
Iām not a fish expert, but 3 hrs without a filter probably wouldnāt kill the fish as long as you cleaned the tank and restarted the filter once you got to your new place. Iād be more worried about the bouncing and jostling of the car, though. Iām not sure if fish handle that very well. If there was a way to secure the tank such that it doesnāt rattle or bounce much at all while youāre driving, that might work. Any followers have advice on fish care and transport??ā Mimi
i think that the best thing to do is put them in a splashproof container halfway filled with tank water and putting them in a moving box in a seat, with towels in the box to keep the container from sliding around! three hours shouldnāt be too much of a stressor on the fishās system, as long as you make sure you donāt leave them in the car unattended (temperature fluctuations), and if your tank is small enough for this to be reasonable, a good idea is to bring enough water from your previous home so that changes in the dissolved content wonāt be stressors. if you have a thermometer, itās a good idea to bring it along to make sure the temperature isnāt fluctuating in the car too badly.Ā
but there are also places where you can order fish online, and theyāll ship them to your house! i donāt know where anon is, so i canāt say if cold weather would affect shipping - iāve personally never gotten fish online, but iād imagine they wouldnāt ship in extreme cold - but setting up a tank, letting it cycle, putting a fish in it, and tearing it back down again might be a lot of work, so you could establish the tank at your new place and order online. i know aquabid is one place where you can do that, and afaik it has a good reputation.Ā
if anon has any more questions, iām happy to help!Ā
i guess i have a pet snail now!
How many tanks are you hoarding?

is there a good way to determine a bettaās aggressiveness? i fell in love with panda cories at the lfs, and i have room in with rose, but iāve never tried him with other fish. i have a backup for the pandas if i get them, but is there a way to tell if rose would react negatively to them?
im personally against betta being kept with tank mates, even if the betta doesnāt attack them straight away, it still creates a Toxic environment for them as, first and foremost, betta prefer being alone and have no desire for companionship.Ā they have no concept of loneliness and aggression can start at any time, even months/years down the road(i stopped keeping tankmates cause itās too stressful for both me and the fish).Ā if you already have a secondary tank for the corys(20g is really the minimum for them tbh, with at least 6 corys, ideally 10) id really suggest just doing that instead.
that being said, if you are going to do tankmates my rule of thumb is if the betta shows anything but indifference for them after the first couple days then they should be removed, this includes doing what a lot of people think isĀ āschoolingā with the corys, where the betta sticks very close to them⦠which is a display of aggression.
some people disagree with me, which is fine, but i personally think that if there is a chance that stocking a tank a certain way(tank mates, sorority tanks, all male guppy tanks, etc) will be dangerous for the fish, then it shouldnāt be tried.
yeah, thatās a good point. setting up a new tank isnt feasable at the moment - leaving for college next august - and i might be losing my 75 gallon for reasons beyond my control, so i think iāll take your advice and hold off on the cories for a while. itās a shame, since theyāre so cute, but i wouldnāt want to stress them. once i get my own place, iāll set up a 20 gallon with them! thank you!!!

and roseās tankās substrate is sand, which iāve heard is better for them!
heāll flare at his reflection sometimes, but other than that, he seems pretty calm? and he has longer fins, so he wouldnt be as prone to chasing them as a plakat or female would be, i think.

My fighter McCree. Day of rescue in March, 1 month progress and 8 months later in Nov. Heās happily in a heated, filtered and heavily planted 10 gallon.
He had fin rot and ich when I rescued him. Walmart refused to sell him to me or give him to me free. So I went back and did self check out. So yes, I did pay for him since they flat out refused to sell him to me, yet put him back out the next day. I emailed Walmart with photos. Their customer team contacted me via phone and I went off about their poor practices.
This little guy is so inspirational. Even in that terrible shape, he was an energetic wiggle puppy the night I rescued him. He never lost hope.
