tara.
Brown hues DARKENED as she cast her gaze downward, her slender digits FIDGETING with a loose thread of her sweater sleeve as she attempted to word what she wanted to say as TACTFULLY as she could. “What makes OUR lives any more important that there’s? I mean — who made US god?”
A small SHRUG is given, gaze downcast for a moment before looking up at the girl again. While Tara had a point, SURVIVAL had to be the top priority. After all, if they’re not fighting for their lives, what ARE they fighting for?
“Nothing. We aren’t more IMPORTANT than them, but nothing’s that important anymore. The only important thing is survival.”

Progress. That’s all she could possibly ask for. Finally after what felt like years at chipping away at this kids, Beth was showing some great signs. Margot had to hide her excitement. Too much smiling might set her off. “Great okay, well to start we got the two main clefs. Treble and bass. Treble will usually be played with your right while bass is played with the left.”
This is progress, and though it’s scary she has to try. After all, there’s nothing good that comes easy. Trying a little hard to do this is gonna be good in the long run, maybe even give all the teachers good reason to treat her less like a delinquent. That’s all she can hope for at least. “The trebles the high notes, right?”
spencer.
❝ it ever cross your mind that i’m mad at him too? ❞ bitter rhetoric is expelled from betwixt his lips with more impudence than he’d ever truly wish to infer . his tone was practically laden with a heavy spite ( unmistakably directed at their monarch , as opposed to beth ) that tasted persistently sour upon his tongue , & he imagined his mother would passionately scold his bad manners had she witnessed such a thing . he’d certainly been raised better than that , he’d like to think .
he returns to a more rational perspective , a breathy & undeniably one - word apology follows suite . spencer can seldom deny the sheepish , friendly smirk that pushed forth his mild embarrassment : leftward corner pulled higher than it’s counterpart . ❝ sorry, ❞ it bares repeating . ❝ it’s been tough lately . everything . i’m spencer . — deanna was my mom . ❞
❝ that's fair . ❞ beth may side with rick without question most of the time , but she isn't so thoughtless that she thinks that he can do no wrong & everyone should love him . everyone has their faults , rick was no exception & neither was beth or spencer or anyone else on earth . faults are a part of life , part of what makes each person who they are , no matter who that may be . perhaps hostility was not the way to make friends in a small & tight knit community , but the boy before her didn’t seem to be all that bothered with her .
as his exterior becomes one of less anger her own expression softens , fingers gracefully moving to sweep a few strands of hair off of her face . ❝ I know who you are . ❞ though beth hadn’t had much of a social life in her time in the community , she had made sure to figure out who was in charge , who they were close to & what made them tick . if you can take down a leader you can take down the entire operation , something she'd prepared herself for the moment she first saw aaron . in the past she'd met only horrific groups ( rick's group being the only exception ) , her expectations had been a fight to the death , hundreds of casualties & absolute chaos . the truth of the community had been a nice thing to live with , though she still didn't entirely trust it . ❝ i’m sorry about your mom . maggie & i — we lost our dad not long before getting here . he was the last of our family other than us . can't say I know exactly how you feel but ... y'know . I get it. . ❞ she couldn't imagine not having maggie around , being the only one of her family left . she'd have nothing left from before the apocalypse , nothing at all .
madison.
Hopefully there would be some things they could scavenge in the house before they moved on - It was off the main roads so there was a chance that it hadn’t been completely picked over but it was hard to tell. She was too tired to care at the moment and all she could think about was curling up in a warm bed and getting a few hours of sleep. “I’ll take whatever we can get …this seems like the best we’ve had it in weeks. Remember that barn that smelled like pig shit? I swear I smelled it for the next week till we got to bathe.” She couldn’t believe any bad odors even bothered her anymore after living for years in a world of rotting, walking flesh but there were still occasions. “I don’t care what kind of bed it is - even if it’s tiny both of our asses are cramming into it and getting some sleep tonight. You’re damn right we deserve it.” She looked around with Beth to familiarize herself with their surroundings. “Do you think there is anything we need to secure out here or should we just pile stuff in front of the bedroom door?” It was a quiet area but that didn’t mean anything.
Being with Madison had undoubtedly saved Beth from going entirely insane. She'd lost her entire life from before; her family, her home, everything. Gone. Madison had saved her from herself, brought back a little bit of humanity in the girl that had been lost after the horrors she'd been through. Yes, Madison Montgomery had saved her in more ways than she'd ever know. A girl that Beth would never have talked to in her old life became her savior in this new one. A lot of things felt bad about the apocalypse, but this wasn't one of them. “I kinda liked that barn. Felt like home.” She says quietly, mostly to herself but also a little bit to Madison. Home was a place she'd lost a long time ago, the little things reminded her of it all. “It did smell like shit though, I sure don't miss that smell.” It's said with a small laugh, the girl tired enough that the laugh isn't too far off simply a smile. “At least if it's a small bed we'll be super warm. Oh, maybe it even has blankets.” The last part is said excitedly, as if blankets had been a rarity her entire life. “We can probably just barricade the door, should probably make sure it has another exit though, just in case.”

Nightmares
maggie.
Carol had baked a batch of acorn cookies not too long ago. They didn’t sound very appetizing, but they were surprisingly good. Something about molasses, she remembered. It wasn’t important. What was important was that Beth had a fully belly, something familiar to comfort her and ground her in the here and now. It was so easy to be sucked back into the dark places, Maggie knew all too well.
She led the way into the kitchen, the tupperware still sitting on the island where she remembered it from this morning, when she and Glenn had split a cookie to taste test them. Plates were in the cupboard, and Maggie took one down and placed it next to the cookies. There wasn’t any milk. Maggie hadn’t had milk since they’d been back at the farm. Even at the prison, they couldn’t find any cows, so dairy wasn’t much of any option these days. Maybe one day they would find a cow, but for now Beth would have water with her cookie.
The elder Greene set the plate and cookie down on the table in front of Beth, then went back for two glasses of water before she sat with her. There wasn’t much she could really say; Beth had a point. “We’ve all been through the wringer. It can make it hard to stay hopeful. But we can’t give up, okay? We all got jobs to do, and sometimes that job is staying strong for everyone around you.”
We all got jobs. It's a phrase the Greene girls had repeated for years, like a mantra to keep themselves too busy for negative thinking. A part of Beth thinks it couldn't possibly work, but she used to say it a lot and she never thought too negatively. Could be coincidence, could be a good distraction. Perhaps she could try again, see how things go. After all, in a place like Alexandria everyone did have a job to do. A community can't work if people don't pitch in.
“Feels like forever since I last had a cookie.” Beth says with a small laugh as she looks down at the plate of cookies. It felt strange, to just have all of the food she needed right there. Yes, they had rations, but it was still more food than she'd ever been prepared to eat again. Life could change so fast these days, she had to take advantage of all that she could before things changed again.
Sometimes that job is staying strong for everyone around you. I'm a way, that had been Beth's job for a long time. It felt as though she'd done that before the apocalypse too, after all bad things happened before the world ended too. Bad had been around just as long as good had, they always had to balance each other out. “Yeah, I guess you're right.” There's a pause as she thinks more, but she tries to make the situation less depressing. “It feels so weird. Just having food and water when we need it. After everything I thought we'd be struggling for it all forever.”
I just wanted you to know that I was here. (requested by lilychambler)
