𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐇 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐋

kindness , she did not expect that. daenerys had not truly understood how fearful she truly was to be in king’s landing after all. surrounded by enemies on all sides and with no place to run. this woman’s face was friendly in a way she couldn’t dispute , she could not see past her smile to wickedness as she did with so many of the rest of them. they watched her with greed , without the respect her family name should garner. a freak among the rest of them , and a danger. 

“ it is harsh , yes. it is nice though. truly , i’ve never seen such beauty. ” she spoke truthfully. the capital was a gleaming giant , from where she stood all was stunning but she wasn’t quite so naive to believe that this beauty stretched out to the peasants living below. “ a strange place nontheless. have you visited king’s landing before? ”

𝐃𝐀𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐒 𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐘𝐄𝐍.

beth’s uncle had died, fighting for lyanna stark at the tower of joy. a tower she was only in due to the targaryen’s and the madness that seized the kingdom up until aerys had fallen. she supposed she could be resentful, at least for jory’s sake, but the war had ended decades earlier and this woman had only been a babe at the time. in truth, to beth, she looked like a character from one of old nan’s stories come to life. she and jeyne, along with sansa used to swoon at all the stories of the kings and queens of the south. aemon the dragon knight and his lady love had always been beth’s favourite.

“ 𝒏𝒐, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒚, 𝒊’𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒌 𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒊 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆. ” and she still had not adjusted. every market vendor was the most impressive one beth had ever seen until she moved to the next, immediately enamoured again. the keep was the impressive, all their new gods on the walls in beautiful mosaics and stained glasses. most of all, beth loved the fruits that she hadn’t even thought to have existed until they were presented at tea. “ 𝒊’𝒎 𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒚, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒚, 𝒊’𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔. 𝒊’𝒎 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉 𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒍, 𝒊 𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆. ”

Looking over at the sound of a response - oh, it seemed he wasn’t alone - Loras raised his eyebrows, a dry laugh escaping him. “Too sweet?” he repeated, looking the girl over. Her clothes certainly don’t express her origins to be through a great house, and, if she was, Loras would most likely have learned her face by now. “Who are you, exactly…?” he asked, perhaps a bit impolitely. He then realized that that’s probably not the way to go about this conversation, despite the fact that he’s insulted for the Reach’s wine.

“I take it you’ve never had wine from the Reach before, because this isn’t nearly as sweet as they can get. Not to say that sweeter is always better, of course, but… this is about average, give or take…” he muttered, trying to think back to sweeter wines he’d had in his lifetime. “If you don’t like it, I’ll gladly take the rest of yours.”

𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐘𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐋.

he looked her over much the same as the other lords and ladies of the court and found her wanting. “𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒆, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒅. 𝒊 𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒂 𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒉, ” she clarified, suddenly nervous. sansa wouldn’t have been so silly as to disparage the wine. “ 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉, ”  she answered, the answer falling flat. “ 𝒔𝒆𝒓 𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒌 𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒍’𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒆𝒓, ” as if loras tyrell knew or cared who ser rodrik was. her cheeks flushed a little, aware in a moment that she was no longer a little fish in a pond that everyone could spot, but a guppy in a vast ocean.

“ 𝒏𝒐, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒅. 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒍. 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏. 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒊’𝒗𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉, ” he was a pretty man, the floral nature of tyrell apparel might have looked feminine to some, but beth thought it was complimentary in its beauty. she saw little comparable embroidery in the north. “ 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒅, 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔, ” she smiled, holding out the goblet with a plain smile. “ 𝒊’𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒚𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔. ”

King’s Landing was certainly not Loras’ favorite place in Westeros. It was busy, it was crowded, it smelled odd, there was a lack of beauty. A lack of greenery, to say the very least. Hells, even the wine they drank seemed to come from the Reach. He felt as if he’d done enough mingling in the crowds; he needed some space to himself, and, in this godsforsaken city, the only space he could find was in the palace gardens, still nursing a goblet of a wine from his home region. “At least the wine is acceptable,” he mused aloud to no one in particular, giving it a look. Loras was already dreading having to go and retrieve another glass.

beth had never looked so out of place. even in her finest gown, she washed away among the extravagance of the south. she couldn’t even find it within herself to be jealous, instead she watched on with wistful, eager eyes and a full goblet. the wine was too sweet, like candied plums. each sip was syrupy and unpleasant, but it did not stop her from doing so over and over until her drink was half way to empty. it was nothing like the wine back home, but slowly she was finding a taste for it.

“ 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒅𝒓𝒚, 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒕. ”

names and faces , faces and names , daenerys walked the grounds of the red keep and ran through the families in her head once more. she felt as though she walked in circles , this place so huge and winding , the hallways paved with gold. how strange that her father had ruled from this gleaming fortress , that she had never lived here , never been held in his arms. a mercy , perhaps. 

she made her way out into the sun , it beamed brightly upon her and she felt its warmth hugging her skin. her fingers brushed over the stone walls of the keep built by her blood , more family lost to history. what would maegor targayen think to see the true heir banished to become a hostage in her own home , to see the mad king ripped from the iron throne? would she be lost to these unruly families as her brother was? 

she found a terrace overlooking the sea and watched the waves , the blue so deep and sparkling beneath the beaming sun. she imagined herself plunging into the waters , swimming away from this place. her pride kept her put , and so did her imprisonment. 

dany jumped at the approach of another and turned quickly , her head dipping. at times she felt as though she trespassed on king’s landing , for she truly didn’t belong here as the others did. the rebellion saw to that. “ my apologies. i thought i was alone. i’m not usually so jumpy. ”

“ 𝒐𝒉 𝒑𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒉, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒚, 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒗𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒏𝒐 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆, 𝒔𝒐 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒈𝒐 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔. ” was there anyone in the seven kingdoms that would not know daenerys targaryen, even from behind? the silver hair and haunting violet eyes of her family made her one of the most recognisable faces in westeros. even to a northern girl like beth. she was lovely to behold, but imposing. even stripped of her claim, beth felt the weight in the air between them and knew regardless, she was speaking with a princess. it was odd, she’d never felt that way with theon, no matter how many times he boasted about his fathers salty seat.

“ 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒚 ? 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈. ”

he walked beside beth, gazing up at the red keep in awe. winterfell was huge, but the red keep was a different kind of castle. not a city within itself like winterfell seemed to be but… a true and proper keep. they, no doubt, did not shelter their people during winter like his lord father did.

he scoffed good-naturedly, glancing her way and laughing a bit for good measure. “𝑰’𝑴 𝑺𝑼𝑹𝑬 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝑨𝑵𝑫 𝑴𝒀 𝑭𝑨𝑴𝑰𝑳𝒀 𝑾𝑰𝑳𝑳 𝑮𝑬𝑻 𝑻𝑰𝑹𝑬𝑫 𝑶𝑭 𝑴𝒀 𝑳𝑶𝑵𝑮, 𝑺𝑼𝑳𝑳𝑬𝑵 𝑭𝑨𝑪𝑬, 𝑨𝑺 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝑺𝑶 𝑳𝑶𝑽𝑰𝑵𝑮𝑳𝒀 𝑪𝑨𝑳𝑳 𝑰𝑻, 𝑰𝑵 𝑵𝑶 𝑻𝑰𝑴𝑬. 𝑰 𝑲𝑵𝑶𝑾 𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑹𝑬 𝑰 𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑵𝑫 𝑰𝑵 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑵𝑶𝑹𝑻𝑯, 𝑨𝑻 𝑳𝑬𝑨𝑺𝑻.”

he straightened his clothing a bit, and he looked down at it. in all honesty, he was sure the rest of his family had proper clothes, but he had often been overlooked when it came down to it. he probably should have just asked for… well new clothes. “𝑷𝑬𝑹𝑯𝑨𝑷𝑺 𝑰 𝑾𝑨𝑺 𝑾𝑨𝑰𝑻𝑰𝑵𝑮 𝑭𝑶𝑹 𝑨 𝑪𝑶𝑴𝑴𝑬𝑵𝑻 𝑭𝑹𝑶𝑴 𝒀𝑶𝑼. she was grateful for his laugh. since beth had grown from child to woman, she had to learn that the cute, humorous remarks of a girl to a liege lord was not the same as a woman’s teasing. she grew nervous in robb’s company, worried she’d grown to comfortable in her station and he may take offence. jon was not so imposing. “ 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆 ? 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒔. 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒊’𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒓, 𝒔𝒏𝒐𝒘. 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆. ” she laughed; but there was truth to it. jon snow had grown into a fine man. if he’d only been born to the right mother, women all over the seven kingdoms would be ready to duel for a smile from jon stark.

hollyhock :   how strong is your muse’s sense of ambition ?  what’s something they strive for in life ?  

beth is more ambitious than one might think. she desperately wishes to elevate her houses standing, make them land-owning lords and give them a solidified place in the north. she knows that she and jory are the last chances to grow their houses stature and fears that her cousin is not up to the task, as he remains unwed and any child she produces would carry her husband's name. as she has no ambition beyond the north, southern marriages offer her little even if she could manage to land the opportunity. if she could latch herself to a karstark bastard, she might could hope to bring him into her fathers position as master-at-arms and earn him a knighthood with potential for growth–– barely a step forward, but any child she bears with a bastard will carry the cassel name first and foremost. she’s ambitious in way she pursues her goals, but they are not steep dreams, beth has learned to reach within her means.

amaryllis :   what is something or someone that your muse takes pride in ?   how do they express that pride ?  

beth is a validation craver, which often results in her feeling pride in whatever she does/says/achieves that receives encouragement or praise. with her father that was hunting, with jory it was numbers, with sansa and jeyne it’s embroidery and so on. she beams whenever she feels she has done something worthwhile and often latches onto that activity, trying to replicate her successes until she grows bored.

carnation :   what is your muse’s relationship with their gender ?   how do they express or not express this relationship ?  

beth is comfortable in her gender and how she as a woman fits into the world. not because she’s happy with every aspect of womanhood as much as it’s never really occurred to her to challenge the norms she has been dealt. as she is of a small house, it is expected that she understand and be capable of some “masculine” activities, such as hunting, wood splitting, farming at times, so she is not as chafed as some other ladies who are strictly confined to “feminine” activities. That being said, Beth ADORES feminine activities, she loves to sew, sing and play the lute, she looks forward to marriage and children ( when she is not forced to confront the minimal agency those things extend to her ) and certainly enjoys the company of other women. she considers herself lucky to have those hobbies afforded to her but also be permitted to ride, hunt and forage. 

gardenia :   is your muse one to confess romantic feelings early on ,   or to conceal them for long periods of time ?  

beth is not one to confess, but people tend to know all the same. she struggles to control her reactions and as such has a TERRIBLE poker face. beth doesn’t hide her feelings out of pride or fear of rejection; merely because she was taught it was polite to do so and that men should proposition her and not the other way around. with women, however, beth tends to be a little more forthcoming as she is used to speaking frankly with them, however, she is not immune to tongue-tied idiocy around a pretty girl. 

bluebell :   does your muse learn from their past ,   or are they prone to repeating the same mistakes ?  

beth is a clever girl, she tends to learn from her past but does so quietly. she’s not one to loudly claim her mistakes as part of her journey but rather tries to silently correct to present the image that she is blemish-free. if beth is forced to confront a mistake, she is prone to becoming defensive to varying degrees, based on where the confrontation is coming from, which can prevent her learning at times in her desperate attempt to seem infallible. however, when given time to reflect or notice her mistakes herself, she is incredibly adaptive and often manages to avoid retreading the same messes.

chrysanthemum :   how does your muse express romantic love ?  how do they feel about love as a concept ?  

beth expresses love through acts of service. she does whatever she can for the person she loves, feeling a sense of obligation to make herself appear indisposable as she has little outside herself to offer. she is known to made trinkets, gloves, hats and even cloaks as gestures of affection, typically hunting the pelts herself (she spent weeks trying to bait only white rabbits for the gloves she made sansa for her name day). how beth feels about love in general is complicated, she believes in it, even believes that someone would love her specifically, but knows that there are many practicalities that will get in her way. most of the men that she meets, she will be ineligible to marry, those she can wed are likely to contribute little of value to her house. she’s very much a romantic, the first to blush at the first sign of eye contact, she wants a husband she will love, but who will also provide her with the means to better her family. but she understands her station and will marry whomever she’s told.

holly :   how strong is your muse’s sense of intuition ?  are they aware of it ?   do they ever fear that it is only paranoia ?  

beth is definitely someone who experiences gut feelings when it comes to meeting people. she is a very warm, excitable person; when she encounters someone that makes her falter, it makes her wary. when that discomfort is triggered, she tends to quiet down and use her lower station to play ignorant as an excuse to say little. growing up in winterfell, she knew almost every face and few gave her cause for concern, theon, however, always made her nervous. she does not tend to have great intuition about events or surroundings, only people, which makes sense considering how people-oriented beth is.

peony :   what would a   ‘  happy life  ’   look like in your muse’s eyes ?

a happy life contains a husband and children, beth is traditional in that sense and a very well known romantic. she also hopes to secure land for house cassel to finally put them in a better standing than staff. as much as she loves the starks, she does not want the entirety of her lineage dependent on their employment. she knows, however, that will not happen as she can only marry within the north and there are few families lord stark would consider for bestowing land upon. if lord stark had a handful more of sons to spare she might have gotten lucky with another cadet branch of stark, but unfortunately she’s likely to marry a third-generation frey.

willow :   how does your muse handle sadness   &   depression ?

she sews. anything and everything she can get her hands on to keep her productive, even if it’s only mending jory’s socks. beth doesn’t cope well with sadness so for the most part she attempts to stave it off. when it does manage to really sink in deep, she is aloof, hard to find and even harder to get an answer from.

jon had never been to king’s landing before. he’d never been farther than the neck, honestly. his youth had been spent in winterfell with her summer snows and bone chilling winters. jon had never felt such 𝑯𝑬𝑨𝑻 before, and it was getting to him.

no one but her father had called her little beth in years, she was a woman grown now and no longer prone to extravagant flights of fancy, but she could feel the way her eyes had lit up at the sight of the capitol. they remained bright, full of a child’s wonder. little beth had come again. she’d never imagined she’d see the south, in fact, she thought she’d be lucky to see white harbour even. if she was unfortunate enough that her father made her a match with one of the many excess frey great-grandsons, she might have one day even seen the twins but kingslanding? not even beth dreamed so large.
