The site is '12ft Ladder' found here:
Show me a 10ft paywall, Iâll show you a 12ft ladder.
Reblogging this on ALL my blogs because holy shit is it useful
This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capitalâŚ
Listen, this is serious.
Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!
It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, itâs literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while weâre talking about books, if youâve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely donât go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately theyâre completely free.
Reblogging so you know which sites to totally avoid
this site definitely doesn't allow you to paste the link to any article blocked by a paywall (say, a NYT article) so that you can read it free of charge! that would be illegal and would benefit broke college students too much. it definitely does not do that. promise.
hi! long time (very, very,, very long time) no see! i just wanted to come here to say that i had a study session with my friend over discord yesterday night, and it was so nice <3 it made me feel motivated and i actually studied and when i would get bored i would just chat with her but i wouldn't for very long bc i didn't want to keep her from studying and idk but it was just really nice i liked it a lot đ
What I learned during one year of online school, and what another year may look like
Just some raw facts
first and foremost, pay attention in class, or at least try to. I spent the majority of my classes browsing through meaningless memes on Pinterest or chatting with my friends, and I regretted it as soon as exams came around.
try doing something physical doing your class, as this reduces the chances of you drifting off and/or losing focus (I personally chose to doodle mindlessly, nothing that involved too much brain power and focus)
all your organization systems fail you
and finding a planning system takes months, but once you find it, STICK TO IT. mine was a hybrid weekly and daily planner with absolutely no other spreads (except a separate calendar). efficient and less time-consuming to make.
you feel motivated in random bursts and will plan out the entirety of your remaining year and then forget about that plan the next day
routines seem appealing as you try to get your life together from the ever-increasing slumps but then your realize they just make everything even more monotonous that they already are
sticky notes are the shit. like seriously. I had sticky notes in my textbooks, past papers, study notes, and even other sticky notes. theyâre versatile and a great way to jot down information quickly and right on top of where you want it (a paragraph on your textbook, for examples)
do not rely on just your textbooks, especially since itâs 10 times harder to ask for help (and by the time you get around to meeting your teacher, you might actually forget about it). ask anyone around you for help â friends, family â and use all the resources you have.
online learning resources are astronomically underrated. while I was struggling in multiple subjects all by myself, I decided to expand the resources I used for studying. My favourites through my senior year were:
OpenStax (FREE textbooks on a variety of subjects groups, by Rice University)
Khan Academy (need I say more?)
Crash Course on youtube, especially for AP Exams (Iâm not a part of the US education system btw, and the resources Iâm mentioning are applicable to everything)
online pdf versions of textbooks
tons of youtube channels (too many to list here,)
use your phone/computerâs night light. trust me it works wonders. plus, itâs cheaper than blue light glasses if you already own a phone/computer (most have it built in). also known as a blue light filter/yellow light.
a little bit of gratitude each week will help you keep your sanity (coming from a former skeptic)
sleepless nights will be common, especially with all the screen time, but youâll learn to live with that.
and mental health will just go down the drain
but it will all be okay
you get both your grades and confidence high
i speak from experience

Well put. (Source: Writing About Writing Facebook page)
Okay. If you are doing research - especially history research, here are a couple steps to possibly save your life.
1) Get thee to wikipedia.
Seriously. You canât site it because it has the academic credibility of some random graffitti, and you canât quote it because the exact writing and content changes every time it gets edited, BUT:
It will almost certainly be more accurate than printed encyclopedias, which are updated every ten years or so, and only require a few eyes compared to wikipedia, where any trolling will probably get you banned or suspended in hours. Not to mention itâs getting a LOT more peer reviews. So you canât quote it, but itâs probably fairly accurate.
And the best part? After just about every tidbit of information, thereâs going to be a little citation number. If you click it, itâll take you down to the references section (and even highlight the relevant one). You can then go to the original source - which will be much more credible. Whatâs more is youâll have specific page numbers (if itâs a book), and youâll know exactly what kind of information youâre looking for.
2) If itâs a book, Internet Archive is your best friend
The search function isnât great if youâre looking up questions like you would into your google (or ecosia - if you want to do a good thing for the earth) search bar, but if you know the author and year the book was published, itâs great. Youâll have this information already on hand from step one, if thatâs how you found the book in the first place.
There are about 30 million books on Internet Archive and counting, so thereâs a good chance theyâre going to have what youâre looking for. However, about half of them are check-out only. Checking out is actually easy. You need to set up a free account, and make sure to give them a valid email address because they will send you a verification email. After that, you can check out any book you want for an hour. (excelent for focus!)
If you are only looking at specific pages, you should be fine, but thereâs also other longer options for checking stuff out for some books. (I think?)
Also, in many books, you can search for specific keywords within the book, and thereâs a little slider at the bottom to find pages.
3) watch Overly Sarcastic Productionâs âHow to do researchâ
Seriously. Itâs amazing. My first point is confirmed in the video which is just more proof that Iâm right /hj

Iâm not sure how many of you know about this website - but bUT BUT - it has a TON of languages with awesome beginner/intermediate vocabulary lists - and as a bonus, it has the pronunciation of NEARLY ALL the languages offered which is super helpful! Languages like Ukrainian, Persian, Swahili, and even Amharic all have their pronunciations.
The only languages without pronunciations that I found were Belarusian and Tamil
