This Void, Drehmoment, Faakmarwin, Heinrich und PewPew sind 4 der 9 Finalisten des New Music Awards, der Auszeichnung für die besten Nachwuchsmusiker im Rahmen der Berlin Music Week. Um euch die diesjährigen Teilnehmer vorzustellen, haben wir ihnen ein paar Fragen gestellt. Findet heraus, welche Ziele sie gerade verfolgen, wo ihre Lieblingsspots in Berlin sind, welche Erinnerungen sie an Discman & Co. haben und wie sie auf neue Musik stoßen - in unserem zweiten Teil des New Music Award-Specials von HAVE YOU MET!

This Void

Das diesjährige Motto der Berlin Music Week lautet „Music Released“. Was assoziiert ihr mit diesem Titel?

This Void: Offensichtlich dreht es sich um die Veröffentlichung von Musik...aber bei dem Wort "release" denke ich auch an "release the balloons"...in diesem Zusammenhang bedeutet das für uns also, dass Musik in einer Art losgelöst ist. Und tatsächlich ist es heutzutage durch die neuen Medien doch so, dass die Menge an Musik inflationär groß geworden ist und überall auf der Welt verfügbar und hörbar ist. Hätte man das jemandem in den 80er Jahren erzählt, hätte er es nicht geglaubt.

Drehmoment: „Released“ heißt ja neben veröffentlicht auch so viel wie losgelassen. Und wenn etwas erst auf etwas losgelassen wird, dann war es vorher noch nicht wirklich bekannt oder noch versteckt in den unendlichen Weiten der musikalischen Schaffenswelt. Der Titel wirkt auf mich, als könnte es der Schwer- und Profilierungspunkt der diesjährigen Berlin Music Week sein, neue Musik von neuen und interessanten Künstlern, von denen man noch nicht viel gehört hat, zu pushen und an die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen. Irgendwie klingt der Titel nach Innovation und Avantgarde.

Faakmarwin: Einen bunten Salat aus Vorfreude, Stress, Verzweiflung, Streite um Kleinigkeiten und am Ende eine ganz große Hand voll Stolz. Zumindest aus unserer Perspektive.

Drehmoment

Platte, Kassettenrekorder und Co: Mit welchem Medium verbindet ihr eine schöne – oder auch die schönste – Erinnerung? Und welche?

This Void: Wir haben zuhause noch Schallplatten von unseren Lieblingsalben. Das Schöne daran ist nicht nur die Größe des Mediums, sondern auch das Auflegen auf den Plattenspieler an sich. Man nimmt sich viel mehr Zeit für das Album und erinnert sich sofort an die Zeit, als man es gerade frisch gekauft hat. "I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose" von Bombay Bicycle Club ist eine von den Platten, die uns als Band wohl am meisten inspiriert hat. Wir denken sofort an unsere unzähligen Stunden, die wir gemeinsam im alten Proberaum in unserer Heimatstadt mit Songschreiben verbracht haben.

Drehmoment: Also meine schönsten Erinnerungen verbinde ich mit dem Mini-Disk-Player. Das Medium, dass sich vor Urzeiten, also in den 90er Jahren, nur sehr kurzfristig etablieren konnte und 2003 eigentlich schon wieder von der medialen Bildfläche verschwunden war. Damit habe ich als Jugendlicher immer vor dem Fernseher gesessen, HipHop-Sendungen geschaut und sämtliche Rap-Songs manuell per Hand aufgenommen, die mir vor den Rec-Knopf gekommen sind. Daraus ist eine große Rap-Song-Minidisk-Sammlung entstanden, die für mich heute einen riesigen Nostalgiewert hat. Manchmal schmeiß ich die alten Minidisks rein, höre die Songs von früher und fühle mich wieder so richtig in die alte Zeit zurückversetzt, in der die HipHop-Begeisterung für mich noch neu und dementsprechend intensiv war. Songs, die ich früher gehört habe, erinnern mich auch immer an alte Zeiten. Und da der sogenannte HipHop-Flash damals, also die unbändige Faszination für die Musik, die HipHop-Kultur und alles, was damit an Lebensgefühl verbunden ist, noch deutlich ausgeprägter, weniger verkopft und damit rein war, ist mir diese Mini-Disk-Zeitreise immer wieder die Zeit wert!

Faakmarwin: Die CD ist wohl das Medium unserer Generation, wobei es Vinly ja noch werden kann. Welche CD können wir nicht sagen, das führt lediglich zu aggressiven Diskussionen über At the Drive Inn vs. Popmusik. Schöne Erinnerung wäre wohl: Mädchen, Sommer, mit dem Auto zum Fluss und Newton Faulkner, ein echter Klassiker.

Heinrich: Papas Plattenkiste. Lift haben wir gerade wieder entdeckt - gehört immer noch zu dem Poetischsten, was ich so kenne. Tangerine Dream, Cream, die frühen Stones. Das war eine richtige Schatzkammer.

Welchen Act – außer euch natürlich – findet ihr als Teilnehmer des New Music Awards am spannendsten?

Drehmoment: Besonders gut gefällt mir AnnenMayKantereit. Eine tolle, kratzige Stimme, schöne Texte und Melodien, die ergreifen. Die Band erzeugt teilweise meine Lieblingsemotion - die hoffnungsvolle Melancholie. Aber auch Lary finde ich super -  soundtechnisch sehr interessant und gesanglich top.

Faakmarwin: Das ist eine doofe Frage, die anderen Bands sind doch alle echte Sahnestücke. Gewinnen sollten PewPew, sowas haben wir noch nie gehört.

Heinrich

Wenn ihr schon einmal in Berlin wart: Welcher war euer Lieblingsspot in der Stadt? Was habt ihr noch lieber gegessen als eine Currywurst und wo war das?

This Void: Käsekuchen im East London am Mehringdamm und einen guten Kaffee im DoubleEye in Schöneberg. Und schöne Plätze in Berlin gibt es einige...abends ein Bierchen trinken gehen am Maybachufer am Landwehrkanal ist auf jeden Fall sehr schick.

Drehmoment: Mir gefällt es in Kreuzberg ziemlich gut. Vielleicht aber auch deswegen, weil ich dort mal sechs Tage zu Besuch war bei einem Künstler, mit dem ich mal zusammen etwas produzieren wollte. Besonders die Chillout- und Party-Zonen am Spreeufer finde ich ziemlich inspirierend. An den kulinarischen Teil kann ich mich leider nicht mehr so gut erinnern. Ich weiß nur, dass wir im Saarland den besseren Döner haben. :)

Faakmarwin: Das Tacheles, aber das hat sich ja erledigt und leider stehen wir ungemein auf Currywurst.

PewPew: Well, da ich hessischer Champion im Currywurst-Wettessen bin, besuche ich auch regelmäßig die „Schärfe Championships“ in Berlin-Wedding. Sadly, ich bin letztes Mal nur Vizemeisterin geworden :-( Aber ich trainiere gerade really hard, um dieses Jahr den Award zu holen. You know? Natürlich fragt man sich always how can you stand this pain und...was diese kleinen Karrottenstückchen in dem Erbrochenen sind. But, es sieht nur wie Karrottenstückchen aus. Das liegt daran, das sich die Pelle in my Tummy zu kleinen Schleimkugeln zusammenzieht und die Farbe von das Curry annimmt. Das ist nur eine von lots of interesting things daran.

To introduce these artists to you we asked them some questions. Find out which acts they are curious to see at First We Take Berlin or which associations they have with Berlin Music Week's theme 'Music Released'! Hear about their favourite ways of listening to music if there's any food in Berlin they prefer to currywurst – in our first First We Take Berlin special of HAVE YOU MET!

Which Act – besides yourself, of course – would you definitely recommend to the visitors of First We Take Berlin?

Sway Clarke II: Seinabo Sey. I heard about her back in November when I released "I Don't Need Much". We both had songs a few similar blogs, and I fell in love with her work. I would actually love to work with her, so if you can make that happen it'd be much appreciated. I've also been a fan of Zoot Woman for years (before Amy Winehouse covered them!).

Jackson Dyer: I'd definitely recommend going to see Vancouver Sleep Clinic and Rüfüs, both amazing Australian acts (no bias haha) who are seeing a lot of success back home. Hamburg's Farhot is another act that I'll be checking out for sure, his hip hop beats are sher shöne!

Sivu: I would recommend Soak, she is brilliant!

This year Berlin Music Week focuses on the topics of Music Released. What do you associate with this title?

Sway Clarke II: It's quite frightening, actually, it reminds me that I need to put out some more music.

Sivu: I think I associate discovering new music with this there is such much amazing music released daily and at our disposal just isn't enough time to hear it all!

Vinyl, tape deck and stuff: Which medium evokes a happy association – or even the happiest one? Would you share it with us?

Jackson Dyer: I really, really like the physical ownership of Vinyls and the ritual of taking an LP out of the sleeve and slowly lowering the stylus until you hear you favourite tunes. I think it reminds you that so much work and craftsmanship goes into producing music.

What is your most frequently used way of listening to music? And what is your favorite way?

Sway Clarke II: Spotify, for sure. Most convenient, and best-looking, by far. A close second is Berlin's very own Soundcloud.

We Invented Paris: CDs in the tour bus or via Spotify on the phone. But what we prefer most is to take the time to put on a vinyl and enjoy a good old single malt whisky along.

Sivu: I do listen to a lot of music on Spotifiy just when I am listening to new artists but once I am in love with a record I will always try and get it on Vinyl, always sounds better.

If you have been to Berlin before: Which was your favorite spot in the city? Which food did you like most – even more than Currywurst?

We Invented Paris: The Flughafen Tempelhof park is awesome! Kite’s, urban gardening, rollerblades etc. There’s so much great food in Berlin, most of the foreign food is excellent! Vietnamese for example is killer!

Jackson Dyer: I'd have to say any of the Sudanesischer Kebab places around Berlin. They have the tastiest sauces, with Haloumi, Falafel and every other culinary delight that you can imagine on their kebabs! My favourite spot is along Wienerstr. just a few metres from the Görlitzer U Bahn, or you can head to one of the 3 Nil Sudanesischer Imbiss shops in Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg.

If you have never been to Berlin before: What, besides Currywurst and the Berlin Wall, do you associate with the city spontaneously?

Sway Clarke II: Before I moved here it was David Bowie and the Berlin Wall. Oh, and the Berghain, of course.

Sivu: I've heard it's a great place for music and culture so I really want to explore it a little and get a feel for it!

Vinyl, tape deck and stuff: Which medium evokes a happy association – or even the happiest one? Would you share it with us?

Ωracles: Nils: I just read that somewhere you can commission an LP made out of your ashes as a final gift for your beloved ones. Sick but seems legit to me. But, which song would you choose? I’m addicted to vinyl, really...but tape is also pure love... Joshua: I own 4- and 8-Track Recorders and everytime I get tired of sitting in front of my computer recording, I get my Tascams out and feel totally unshackled by the limitation those mini cassette studios bring along.

Soak: I love vinyl, think there is something atmospheric about the sometime white noise and little cracks. Reminds me how old some of the music is.

Ballet School: Tripping on a great collection of old tangos and vintage hawaiian LPs.

Phoria: We all grew up with cassette players in cars. That's where your first musical memories are formed, isn't it? Sitting in the back of your parents' car, listening to the same old fluffy bit of tape that you've heard a thousand times, wondering when the journey's going to end, playing eye-spy and feeling like you're going to throw your carrots against the back window. Happy times.

There is so much great music out there – what is your way of discovering new tunes?

Ωracles: Nils: I definitely don’t have enough money to fulfill all my dreams in the record store so I tend to discover a lot of sound through surfing the web... Niklas: Agree, plus people raving to me about stuff I need to hear.

Soak: Late night YouTube wanders, keeping track of all the up and coming websites. Checking the usuals (Q, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork). Websites like 'birp!' are great at playlists.

Ballet School: Rosie reads blogs, Michel via friends he feels connected with, Louis bouncing around from party to party.

Phoria: BBC Radio 6 music is disappointingly good, as no matter how hard you try to be too cool for the mainstream you have to admit that for a lot of new music they're right on it. Link hopping online, too. Finding common influences, etc. There's a lot to be said for spending five days researching the use of .48 guitar strings between July and October 1974. You'll ending up finding at least four bands who wouldn't be making music today without the influence of those heady days.

If you have been to Berlin before: Which was your favorite spot in the city? Which food did you like most – even more than Currywurst?

Ωracles: Nils: I hang out in Wedding a lot and I will finally move there someday in the very near future. I’m a vegetarian and there’s a supernice Polish restaurant in Wedding where they cook this beet soup and dumplings. I’m usually not a great soup fan but this thing was mind expanding! Niklas: There’s nice and cozy pockets everywhere, what gets to me the most is the varied neighbourhood flairs all over. Last place that kicked me was Neukölln’s Weichselstraße, complete with a very nice cheese store called Peppi Käse. Joshua: Food is all over the place, try for handmade snacks and probably Berlin’s greatest beer (Heidenpeters’ Pale Ale) at Markthalle 9 in Kreuzberg

Soak: Typically I really like the wall, the graffiti is pretty cool. I like the history of the whole thing. To be honest I'm not a big fan of the German food (sorry), I can't understand their meat. But I like the big pretzels! 

Ballet School: Erdnuss Flips!

Phoria: Last time any of us were here, the 'Pump haus' was mentioned. Jeb had a lot of fun with that. Some of us have never been. We're looking forward to it.

Sweat, baby, sweat! Inzwischen sollte es auch der Letzte gemerkt haben: Es ist Sommer in Berlin! Und noch mehr als sonst werden wir von unzähligen verlockenden Partys, Konzerten, Festivals, Ausstellungen und vielem mehr bezirzt, die das Leben noch ein bisschen aufregender und schöner machen können. Kommen dazu noch Semesterferien, weiß man vor lauter überbordenden Reizen zu spannenden Events als Berliner Student schnell gar nicht mehr, wohin mit seiner Zeit, Lust und Sommerlaune. (Vorausgesetzt natürlich, man befindet sich gerade in der glücklichen Lage, den segensreichen Teil des Kreislaufs von Segen-und-Fluch-des-Studentenlebens auskosten zu können und hat keine lauernden Abgaben im Nacken sitzen.) So überbordend das Angebot ist, so klein ist manchmal der Geldbeutel. Deswegen haben wir für euch die besten Low-Budget-Tipps für Studenten zusammengestellt, um den Sommer zu versüßen und trotzdem noch genug Kleingeld für eine Kugel Eis pro Tag zu haben – oder drei!

DIE ÖFFENTLICHEN BIBLIOTHEKEN BERLINS

Klar, wenn man nicht gerade an Haus-, Bachelor-, Master-, Doktorarbeiten oder sonstigen wissenschaftlichen Erzeugnissen zu sitzen hat, will man vielleicht auch einfach mal eine Weile keine Bücherei von innen sehen. Aber gerade das Erlebnis, seinen Lesestoff nicht nach akademischen Schlagwörtern zu filtern, kann die pure Entspannung bedeuten! Einen dicken Schinken ausleihen, den man schon immer lesen wollte, aber bisher nie die Zeit dazu gefunden hat, einen triefenden Liebesroman verschlingen und dabei ungesehen Tränen vergießen oder eine der über 40.000  DVDs mit nach Hause nehmen – all das wird möglich mit einem Benutzerausweis für die öffentlichen Bibliotheken Berlins. Als Student zahlt man nur 5€ im Jahr und kriegt dafür die freie Auswahl in über 75 Berliner Bibliotheken! Und das alles, ohne seine gesamten Mitbringsel vorher im Locker verstauen zu müssen.

LITTLE ASIA: ASIATISCH ESSEN IM PREUSSENPARK

Wenn das Geld nur noch für die asiatische Nudelpfanne mit Gemüse und Sojasauce reicht, dein Gaumen aber nach einem Geschmackserlebnis anderer Dimension lechzt – dann ist es Zeit für einen Ausflug nach Wilmersdorf! An sonnigen Wochenenden lässt sich dort im Preußenpark am Fehrbelliner Platz das beste homemade Thai-Food überhaupt genießen. Für ungefähr 5€ kriegt man schon ein Hauptgericht und den kleinen kulturellen Ausflug dazu.

EIN BIER IM GRÜNEN

Es gibt unzählige wundervolle/verschrobene/aufregende/gemütliche Kneipen in Berlin, das wusste schon David Bowie. Wenn die Laune aber mal nicht nach durch den Rauch schemenhaft wahrgenommenen Menschen oder wackeligen Biergarten-Bänken verlangt und auch das Klimpern in der Tasche auch eher leise geworden ist: ab zum Späti und raus zum nächsten grünen Fleck! Davon gibt’s nämlich mehr als genug: ob auf der Insel der Jugend, an der East Side Gallery, auf dem Tempelhofer Feld, am Dreiländereck auf dem Kreuzberg oderoderoder! Mit Kerzen, Decke und der richtigen Begleitung eindeutig einer der besten Programmpunkte für jeden regenfreien Sommertag!

AnnenMayKantereit: Wahrscheinlich beschreiben uns die drei Worte Instrumente, Bühne, Auftritt ziemlich gut.

eRRdeKa: Melancholie, Hedonismus, Fuck-Off-Attitüde.

Lary: laut.lieben.leben.

Tom (Tom Thaler & Basil): Holland, Hamburg, Kornwestheim

Um den New Music Award mit nach Hause zu nehmen - dafür seid ihr hier. Welches Ziel steht als nächstes auf dem Programm?

AnnenMayKantereit: Reiten lernen.

eRRdeKa: Wirkliche Ziele habe ich mir noch nicht gesetzt. Ich möchte einfach weiter an mir und meiner Musik arbeiten. Alles was drum herum passiert, ist zwar sehr schön und eine Ehre für mich, aber ich würde mich damit nie zufriedengeben. Es muss weitergehen...

Lary: Gaaanz viel live spielen

Tom (Tom Thaler & Basil): Ein Album machen und auf Tour gehen! Mal sehen, in welcher Reihenfolge, aber wir wollen unbedingt raus und den Menschen zeigen, was wir gemacht haben.

AnnenMayKantereit: Die schönen Erinnerungen hängen eher an der Musik als an den CDs, Platten und Kassetten. Kassetten haben wir nur in der Kindheit gehört, CDs kaufen wir immer noch regelmäßig. Platten sind bei uns sehr beliebt, vielleicht weil sie früher ein "Fass.Das.Nicht.An."-Gegenstand waren.

eRRdeKa: Auf jeden Fall Kassettenrekorder. Aber da war ich wahrscheinlich nicht der Einzige, der stundenlang vor Radiosendungen gesessen ist und gewartet hat, bis DER Track kam, um diesen dann aufzunehmen. Meistens hatten die Dinger ja auch noch ein Mic dran. Da konnte man dann noch ein paar schöne Anmoderationen zum Besten geben. Schallplatten sind aber meiner Meinung nach das schönste Medium um Musik wiederzugeben. Vor allem Techno.

Lary: Definitiv Platte, alle Erinnerungen sind schöner wenn   Plattenknistern drunter liegt :)

Tom (Tom Thaler & Basil): Diskman! Darin habe ich die Eminem Show rauf und runter gehört, bis das Ding kaputt war! ;)

Auf welche Art hört ihr am häufigsten Musik? Und wie am liebsten?

eRRdeKa: Am meisten höre ich Musik über mein Macbook, auf Youtube, iTunes, Soundcloud, Spotify etc. Am schönsten Musik hören kann man, wenn man sich eine Platte auf die 1210er legt, sich eine Zigarette ansteckt und ein Glas Weißwein auf der Ledercouch trinkt. Und beim Autofahren. Nachts. Und laut.

AnnenMayKantereit: Berlin hat so viele schöne Orte und gute Fressbuden, dass wir auf die Frage keine Antwort geben können.

eRRdeKa: Kater Holzig. Da habe ich so einiges gegessen, war gut, weiß aber nicht mehr was das war ;-)

Lary: Ich wohne in Berlin, deshalb ist mein Lieblingsspot mein Dach :) Und am liebsten esse ich momentan den Burger im District Mot.

Tom (Tom Thaler & Basil): Ich kenne vielleicht 5 Prozent der Stadt. Die ganzen hippen Insidersachen habe ich wahrscheinlich noch nicht entdeckt. Vor 2 Wochen war ich im Helmut Newton Museum. Das war auf jeden Fall cool!

In the context of Berlin Music Week the University of the Arts Berlin offers a four-day seminar, taking place from 1-4 September. It will focus on the German music market with particular emphasis on recent developments in the recording industry, new marketing strategies and licensing models. The lectures will cover the business, le­gal and media issues affecting independent record releasing, concert booking and artist promotions including the changes brought by the move to digital. On the fourth day, lectures are taking place on the premises of the Berlin Music Week’s WORD! Conference including the VUT Indie Days that will be looking into themes like interactive music, tech & startups, recorded music and diversity.

The German music market is the biggest market in Europe and the fourth largest in the world behind United States and Japan. In 2013, the record music market grew by 1,2%. 22,6% of all music sales in Germany are now digitally generated, this means that the most important revenue driver is still the CD, which continues to bring in more than one billion Euro in Germany. The highly developed infrastructure of the music and media market is regarded one of the greatest competitive advantages Germany has to offer. The seminar presents a series of lectures by top experts from the German music industry operating on the domestic market. Host Dagmar Rumpenhorst-Zonitsas (Music Business Consultant at Daglicious Coordination) about the content of the course:

Lectures are held daily be­tween 10 am – 5 pm including breaks. There will be an evening event on Monday night where all participants are invited to network with other Berlin musicians and creatives.

Als Selbstständiger in der Kreativwirtschaft kann man aus einer Reihe von Förderprogrammen wählen, die beispielsweise bei der Anschubfinanzierung unterstützend sein können.

Nachdem wir im ersten Blogbeitrag eine kleine Hilfestellung gegeben haben, um sich darüber klarzuwerden, wo man steht und was man sucht, beginnt nun die konkrete Suche nach dem passenden Förderprogramm.

For the second time Berlin Music Week will host the Music Start Up Corner on 5 September 2014. Digital companies and startups with a close link to the music ecosystem will get the chance to present their ideas, products and services to an audience of experts, potential partners and investors.

Submit your pitch deck by 1 August 2014!

The ten finalists present at Berlin’s Postbahnhof in elevator pitches, followed by a Q&A. The first prize will be a music startup scholarship sponsored by Mashup Norway. Participating startups will get unlimited access to all official day- and night-time programme of Berlin Music Week.

Producer Matt Martians and lead vocalist Syd "The Kyd" of the American hip hop collective Odd Future teamed up for offering neo soul fetchingly mixed with trip hop, electronica and funky elements. 

Speaking about their second record, Syd said,
