he majored in marine biology (water), got traumatized(?) by/near a phantom ocean (maybe disturbed by the very existence of it?). to cope, he becomes obsessed with the idea of a supernatural town in the middle of a desert (no water). he moves to said town an lives there for 5 (or 15 years depends on how you want to view it). surprise, there’s a phantom ocean!
