In the summer of 1970, the author and illustrator Arnold Lobel published “Frog and Toad Are Friends,” a children’s book about the adventures of two male amphibians. The duo’s offbeat chemistry enchanted kids and amused their parents; by the end of the decade, Lobel had released three popular sequels. Outwardly, the stories were short and sweet, featuring kid-friendly plotlines that usually ended in a tidy resolution.
But the books may have contained a more complicated dimension. Four years after the first “Frog and Toad,” Lobel informed his family that he was gay. Half a century later, the caring connection between his two beloved protagonists reads as something deeper than the relationships in an average children’s series, even as the books retain their many original charms.
