I started this project with the idea of creating a space for indulging in your most guilty and campy pleasures away from those who invalidate and belittle them, which would be called The Bottom. The name came to me after watching a tv show about the deep ocean. To me, this geographic location represented the place you go in your mind after hitting a low of insecurity and worthlessness, where nothing matters. Politics and inhibitions fade into a distant abstraction, and the pain buckles into something poised, something stoic.
The creatures that exist there remind me of club kids and trans women and genderqueers pushing fashion into an uncomfortable place, using facetune to disfigure their bodies into something unrecognizable, embracing the inhuman and the artificial and the repulsive. I felt this unhinged and uninhibited kinkiness echoed in the isolated landscape of the deep sea, and the seafloor in general. Muclaginous invertebrates, tubular organisms, tentacles and secretions and cucumbers unfurling and tossing in the substrate, undulating, intermingling. The seabed is an unsophisticated place, sessile, destined to be trampled on.
The Bottom is of course an innuendo: it not only refers to a spatially inferior place, but adopts the discomfort and sleaziness of the homoerotic sex position. I am not interesting in making an argument about bottoming or sodomy, and I’m more-so using the phrase and the concept to establish the piece as something queer, dirty, uninterested in keeping up appearances. The name of the piece is tied to how it will be exhibited: on the floor. The ground is for trash, dirt, the common, the worthless, the un-esteemed. Sitting on the floor is a childish, humble, casual act. Formality exists to uphold the power of institutions (I probably need to flesh this out more--formality is required in places of money and influence). Etiquette is a disruption of the natural self.
Art goes on the walls. People laugh and interpret and hold their hand to their mouths and say “ahhhhh.” Art on the floor is different. The chin must angle down.
Rugs exist in this inferior space. They touch dust and dirt. Rugs are sandwiched between the ground and those that tread on them. They lay flat and vulnerable. They are predominantly associated with the feet, one of the more uncouth parts of the human body. They are soft and warm, and exist to make the ground a more inviting and pleasing space. A rug should be intermittently shaken to relieve it of the debris that has collected in its fibers. I also appreciate the shag carpet or rug as a hairy object. A rug can be untrimmed, scruffy, pubic. It can bear an uncomfortable resemblance to anatomy. Being untrimmed is a statement – severely for trans women, especially for cis women, slightly for gay men. It is an acceptance of the self. For many of us, body hairs are sites saturated with shame. After so long living with that unsustainable shame, the razor breeding razor bumps, sinking lower, it buckled into something vindictive. The cause of my own sense of inferiority became something I wanted to defend and pride.
There’s a lot of gross masculine ideals at the heart of the gay male leather scene, but as a person not in this group, I have my own idealized vision of it: an acceptance of body hair not as hyper-masculine but as hedonistic, uninhibited, unrefined. I conveniently gloss over the muscle worship. Pig sex is a fetish associated with leather that involves body hair and poppers and an interest in bodily fluids and sex toys. It’s an approach to sex that pushes the limits of the body and the superego.
It’s about sending yourself down until you’re in a place of clarity. The jewel thrown overboard sinks and sinks until it comes to a resting place in a calm clearing of sand and dusk.
I ALWAYS PICKED THE GIRLS WHEN I PLAYED VIDEO GAMES. IF FOR NO OTHER REASON, THAN OUT OF SHEER SPITE AT THE EASE OF IDENTIFICATION THE BOYS AROUND ME HAD WITH THEIR UN-INTERESTINGLY PHALLIC/KAMEHAMEHA SUPER-HEROES… WITH THE ASSUMPTION THAT THERE WAS SOME SORT OF INHERENT OR TRAGIC FLAW IN PRINCESS PEACH’S MARIO KART 64 PERFORMANCE. CHUN-LI’S ABSURD CURVES AND THE CUNT’S MEOW SCREECHING FROM EVERY TURN OF HER HYPER-PORNOGRAPHIC BODY FUELED MY RAGE AGAINST BOYHOOD, ALBEIT THROUGH ARGUABLY THE MOST ‘BOYISH’ OF MEANS. I DISCOVERED, USING MY VIRTUAL PUSSY TO STRADDLE THE BEEFY TRAPEZIUSES OF ANTHROPOMORPHIC CYBORG ATTACKERS, THAT THE AWKWARD SHORTCOMINGS OF PUBESCENT LIFE COULD BE OVERCOME ONE PELVIC HEAD CRUSH AT A TIME. LIKE MOTOKO KUSANAGI, MY WOMANHOOD WAS ENTIRELY ARTIFICIAL, SAVE MY MIND AND THE TINGLING SENSATION IN MY SPINE PRESENT AT THE REVELATION OF A NEW LEVEL, ESPECIALLY ONE UNLOCKED AS A SECRET–EACH TIME MY ARTIFICIAL LUNGS LIFTED INTO THE AIR AS IF I WAS ÆON, BRAVELY DENYING VERTIGO OF ITS AFFECT AS I SPREAD MY AMAZONIAN LEGS AND TAKE IN THE RAPIDLY MOVING AIR THAT TRACES THE FANTASTICAL SKYSCRAPERS OF BREGNA. IMMERSED IN A WORLD OF POST-APOCALYPTIC INDUSTRIAL WAR-ZONES, I ASSUMED THE ETHICAL AND POLITICAL TASK OF FIGHTING OFF THE TENTACLE AGGRESSION OF HENTAI RAPE AND THE CHUCKLES OF MY PEERS SIMULTANEOUSLY. I WENT TO EVERY LAN PARTY IN HOPES THAT I COULD WITNESS THEM LOSE BATTLE AFTER BATTLE TO HYPERBOLIC DEPICTIONS OF THE SAME FIGURES THEY WOULD LATER JERK OFF TO; THE SAME FEAR-INSPIRING FEMME FATALE’S WHO THEY WOULD, AT SOME POINT ATTEMPT TO BATTLE IN THE REAL; THE SAME IMAGINARY CUNTS AND PHANTASTICAL PUSSIES THAT WOULD (AND STILL DO) TEMPT THEM TO TOUCH AND CONQUER THE VITAMIN-ENRICHED TUNA OF MY BODY.

the last two weeks have been bad because i just cannot find yarn in the right colors and i thought i would be able to buy yarn online but i bought $130 worth online and it was all drastically different color than it looked
i bought 4 balls of "caron light country peach" which i was able to see in use on google so hopefully that color will be true but im doubtful
so i went to Forma yesterday and bought some undyed wool skeins and emailed annica about doing a wool dying lesson with me
i really didnt want to dye because it just makes this process even slower but its a last resort
anyways, here's what i've done since my last post
i'm really trying to finish the skin-tone "background" before going in and latch-hooking
i still wasnt satisfied with a yarn for the manhole cover but i started tufting it anyway and i like it now, but i might take out the "rust" yarn that i first tufted because it doesnt match
i got a job as a dishwasher because i need a job but i applied to this because i kind of like it conceptually as a bottom-barrel job
i have to wear a cap for it and i hate hats on me so i've been wearing it backwards even though i question the ethics of backwards caps bc thats the only way it looks good
i was wearing today while tufting bc i didnt wanna shower and have hat hair and was thinking about the performance of masculinity of it all and how i went from doing manual craftwork bc i liked the femininity if it to building a wood frame with my dad, using a mechanized gun that violently penetrates the fabric, and wearing a backwards cap bro 🤙🏼
i had to stop working on it to do vis id branding hw but i wanted to keep goingggg
what i got done last night
i was excited to keep working today and now i'n sad!!
progress i made yesterday + today
i've been wondering which makes more sense conceptually: should i turn the frame around ao the front of the rug faces the rest of the room and the process photos will be better because it wont be backlit, and i'll be hidden while working on it, or keep it as is so the front of the rug is hidden?
posting this ugly pic for my memory

i finished setting up the frame and drew the outline for the first rug today, and afterwards met with annica cuppetelli to work out the problems i've been having with the gun. she encouraged me to double up the yarn strand in the gun so that it doesn't fall out. afterwards i went to the weaving studio and used one of the yarn winders to make 4 yarn cakes (a type of yarn ball) out of a jumbo pull skein of yarn, placed two of them on the dowel yarn holder my dad and i made, and fed them both into the gun. it worked perfectly and i finally feel ready to really start. most craft store yarn comes in pull skeins, which tangle really easy in the gun, so today was a big problem solver.
here is what i started tufting on the rug today
exhibition install idea: 3 rugs hugging the wall, at a corner of the room, so 2 rugs are facing the same direction and the other is at a right angle to them. instructions for interaction will follow the moulding of the wall about 2-3 inches above it (2-3 inches above the floor if no moulding), in a straight line that follows the corner of the wall and the L shape that the rugs create. everything is very very low, and the text encourages viewers to get nearer to the ground.
an errant idea i had was a sheet of plastic or metal that is suspended from the ceiling above the rugs so that it is about 2 feet above the ground, so that the rugs cannot be seen unless you crouch below it. i like this conceptually but i want the rugs to be seen lol. and this also excludes people unable to crouch down. how can i accomplish this in another way?
a lil world very far from us, hidden in a nook, and in the underbrush
rug mockups I worked on throughout this week
Creating a lot of furriness excites me, but I think I need to work more towards establishing the feeling of a body–like the rugs are an anatomically ambiguous close up shot of a body. I think most of this comes with big changes in depth, but my gun is only capable of pile heights from 8mm - 22mm. so, I need to think outside of the box.
tomorrow i begin the first rug (the image on the left). i’m behind in my schedule, so i’m going to barrel ahead.

finally freed up enough space on my disk to edit & upload this.
this is footage from the tufting i did last week (part 1)
a lot has happened
i applied to the gadawski callam grant after review, heard that i received it on the 21st and ordered a tufting gun and backing fabric the same day.
the gun and cloth arrived on the 24th, and my dad and i started figuring out how this tricky machine works. with the help of Tim, the man I ordered the gun from, we learned how to build a tufting frame. my dad is pals with the set designer for my high and middle school district's theater program, so we got to use the school's wood and woodshop for free?? it all came together so nicely
being a theater kid finally paid off
the frame is 67 in x 96 in with carpet tack boards on the perimeter to stretch the fabric on. i have NEVER built anything like this and it was surprisingly easy?? it was also a cute bonding experience
after a LOT of struggling, i finally figured out how to use the gun and create density. i still have more to learn. it has been a steep learning curve but also GRATIFYING. i'm going to make another sample of a bigger size tomorrow.
