When she felt a tickle on her wrist, this time she had enough presence of mind to not immediately slap it, instead lifting it up to look. There was a glowing blue worm about the size of a pencil curled around her wrist, a bit fuzzy, like a caterpillar. She had never seen anything like it. Shuddering, she pulled it off and tossed it away, only to realize that there were more of them. Glowing blue worms were nestled in the folds of her sleeping bag, one was climbing up her shirt, and she felt one nestling into her hair that she hastily pulled out and tossed.

“Nadia! Nadia, wake up!” said Riley, turning to her sleeping girlfriend.

Nadia was laying there with her eyes closed and an expression of ecstasy on her face. Her shorts were pulled down around her knees, and she was touching herself slowly, dreamily, as if she were only half-aware. And the glowing blue worms were all over Nadia, wriggling in her clothes, wrapped around her arms and legs, writhing in her hair. As Riley was struggling to comprehend what she was seeing, she saw that there was a long, glowing worm wriggling around in her bush.

“Wake up, Nadia!” Riley shook her, and received no response. Nadia kept her eyes closed and continued to play with herself as though she couldn’t even hear Riley. Riley started trying to brush the worms off her, to pull them out of her hair, when she noticed one sticking partially out of Nadia’s ear. She grabbed at it, but it slipped through her fingers and slipped all the way inside. “Oh god. Oh god, what the fuck? Nadia, you need to wake up!”

Riley felt something land on her head, and looked up, only to see that the tent’s ceiling had a tangled mass of the worms crawling around right above her. She didn’t react quickly enough, and they fell right onto her head, onto her face. She screamed and spluttered and tried to pull them off, that strange numb sensation everywhere now. And she felt several fuzzy, lithe worms curling into her ears. Panicking, she smashed one, but couldn’t stop the others from sliding inside, further than her fingers would reach. She could feel them in there, wriggling around, and it felt almost like they were crawling into her brain, burrowing into the folds and wrapping around her spine.

It was impossible. This entire situation was impossible. And while Riley was experiencing this horror, her girlfriend was playing with herself and moaning softly as if none of this was happening.

Maybe she was going crazy, and this was all some hallucination. Whatever this was, she definitely needed help. She went for the bag where her phone was, but her movements felt clumsy and uncoordinated. Whatever substance was in the worms was affecting her muscles, making her weak and dizzy, her head spinning as she fumbled with the clasp on her bag.

She willed herself to get the bag open. She could do this. She had to call someone, get help…

The thought of getting help filled her with an intense sense of fear and dread, as if she were considering putting her hand into a garbage disposal.
