In 1888, German booksellers and publishers agreed that publishers would set one price for each book, and booksellers would abide by it. The fixed-price promise aimed to reduce competition between sellers, and give lesser known titles a chance to flourish. “The arrangement resembled a prenuptial agreement between both sides, based on trust,” Michael Naumann, former publisher and German secretary of culture, wrote in 2012. The agreement became law in 2002. Today any retailers who sell off-price books are required to pay heavy fines.

The sands rapidly shift, the landscape only has one constant, change

Changes from the prevailing winds

Some induced by machinations of men

Some by random chance

Causality reigns supreme

Guided by the sun by day

Path taken reflected by the stars at night.

Path never clear

Path ever changing

All the man can do is soldier on

The price of stagnation, atrophy

Backward, only has past achievements, pain and regret

Forward, a chance

A legacy

What form of legacy?

Good or bad, changes like the dune

The man walks on

A mere speck in the dune.

Potential to merely affect it

Never to control it

The dune is eternal, the men, aren’t
