“NYC’s top female hockey pro only gets paid $26k”

Three hundred South African firefighters have arrived in Alberta to help battle wildfires raging in the province’s north.

An Air Canada jet picked them up in Johannesburg Sunday morning and landed in Edmonton late last night after refueling in Barbados.

They are from Working on Fire, a government funded programme that trains unemployed youths to become field and forest fire fighters.

Excerpt from their official  Website 

 “Working on Fire is an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) aimed at providing work opportunities to young men and women. The Programme resides under and is funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Participants are recruited from marginalised communities and trained in fire awareness and education, fire prevention and fire suppression skills. In addition they are also trained in skills such as first aid, carpentry, cooking, health and safety and communications.

Working on Fire recruits and train young men and women from across South Africa with a strong focus on marginalized communities and people with disabilities. There are currently more than 5 000 participants in the Programme, 94% of whom are youth, 31% are women (the highest level in any comparable fire service in the world) and 3% disabled”.

that’s Jo-Pawveski, a stray who wandered onto the ice and past the nashville predators bench during round 2 of playoffs. They eventually picked her up and sent her to the humane society.

Here she is.

The SAN JOSE SHARKS won that game and attributed it to her, naming her after the Sharks captain: Joe Pavelski. When they found out she was a girl, they changed her name to Jo instead of Joe.

She became an instant good luck charm after that as the Sharks won every game at home that series and moved onto round three.

Since then, every game, they stack pucks and stick a idol to Jo for luck.

This little cat has had merchendise made out of her. She’s literally almost replaced SJ sharkie as maschot of the team.

I mean. I’m not making this up. I HAVE A RALLY TOWEL OF HER THEY GAVE OUT FOR GAME 1 OF THE 3RD ROUND. I OWN THIS FUCKING THING:

Good news, This week, as Sharks made their first Stanley Cup, Jo and another Kitty were adopted.
