Thānameās Ben Maxx. Iām a filmmaker above all, but Iām also the practical effects master at the local playhouse. So, if you ever need a bat on some fishing wire, you know Iām the man to call! Heh, just kidding. We can do you way better than that!
Now, can I help you with anything? Or are you just in for a chat?
(a.k.a. another blog from yours truly, @era-of-ages)
Ben Maxx has pulled in the station! The thing about Ben is he isnāt actually an avatar of anything! But heād love to convince you he is! Heās an expert with practical effects, magic tricks, and mind games and wants to know test just how good at this he is. So letās put it to the test, shall we? Do you really know whatās real and whatās not?
In case the deceit and trickery did not make it clear, Ben is marked by the web, but he doesnāt know it. This makes him rather good at convincing people of his illusions, which he chalks up to his skill and charm.

[The show is over, and hanging above it all, still and limp, is Ben Maxx. A simple accident that was expertly planned. A harness that wound up a bit too tight in just the wrong places. A board ever so slightly misaligned to hold a cable taut, keeping its puppet in place. He hangs there now, the light gone from his eyes and the beating gone from his heart. All before he could ever take his final bow]
{ Stella is just. Standing there. Unsure. She can't move, she's scared of slipping, she's scared- there's something wrong with Ben. Stella's never seen a corpse before. She hasn't even considered the fact he may be dead, just stuck in an awkward position that's about to be really really bad }
[Ben had, many times, assured her the rafters were safe. Tested them a thousand times. Before the show he had done every check he could on her harness. The was no possible way she could fall, heād said. And, to his point, he hadnāt fallen either. Just the snag of a board that wasnāt even meant to be there, some minuscule little accident had cost him everything]
[Everything was dark. His lungs did not rise nor fall. But a heart that did not beat and a mind that did not think thought of one thing only. I am dead and the kid is still up in the rafters. Wake up, Ben!]
{ Stella ever so carefully attempts to edge closer. It somehow feels wrong, there's tears threatening to choke her and she doesn't know why. This is an amazing event!! Her first show's just done!! She mustn't cry. She can't. }
Uhm....
Mister... Ben? Are you ok? Are you stuck, I can help!
[Ben didnāt move. His chest didnāt rise or fall with any breath, and he did not react to her questions. The cable on his harness was snagged on a board, and he was left hanging where he could not reach the rafters and Stella could not reach him. At least physically.]
[He can hear her. He can hear her! Heās alive. Oh god heās alive and she doesnāt know! Come on Ben wake up!]
[he doesnāt answer her, but his hand moves. Itās not a lot but itās all he can manage. He just has to pray that she sees it. He canāt see, but the room feels like itās spinning. Heās coming back, but heās not okay. He still canāt breathe]
[Oh come on! You can do better you need to do better there is a kid who needs you right now Ben wake UP-!]
[He gasped, grabbing at the harness and I clipping it, just to get it off. He can barely process whatās happening or where Stella even is, but he manages to grab onto one of the rafters before he falls and pull himself up before collapsing on the catwalks. He looks absolutely terrible, but heās very much alive. His eyes are still glassy, but heās looking for her]
Stella? Are you still up here? Iām- Iām afraid I canāt see you.
I- I think something did happen. I got stuck and my harness was too loose and I slipped.
[He sits up, everything still incredibly blurry even though he was wearing his glasses. He tries to find her form in the darkness, but heās struggling]
But Iām alright now, it was just a bad accident, I promise. Are you okay?
[He rubs his eyes, he can see somewhat better now, at least where Stella is. He tries to stand, but it doesnāt go very well.]
Iām a- a little hurt. But just a little. I canāt see very well, I think that happens when you pass out. But Iāll be alright. Donāt worry about me.
You did absolutely brilliantly tonight, by the way. Didnāt miss a single cue! Very impressive for your first show.
Oh! Yeah, I had lots and lots of fun!! It was so exciting! I thought it would be really scary but it wasn't, it was just like the practice, just with so many people gasping and cheering me on! It was wonderful, thank you thank you for letting me do this!!

[As it turns out, Maggots are very hard to get under control. Especially when they don't listen to you. Why did it have to be maggots?]
[When Ray came back from the bathroom to watch the finale, he quickly realized Ben was missing. It was only after the show was over that he could rush up and try to get Ben down from there.]
[He was dead. He had to be, right? Otherwise he wouldn't be so limp. He was dead and Ray would never come home to his place again or get to make him a new cookie recipe or-]
[But. Ray had died hadn't he? Just less than a week ago. And there he was, back before anyone knew.]
[So he rushed up to the stage and frantically tried to figure out how to bring him down before anyone could see. Maybe if Ray got to him first he'd come back to life and nobody would have to know. Maybe the maggots would cooperate for once and help him out or something he didn't know how these Fears worked but something-]
[In his rush, one of his sleeves tore open. Behind it was a mass of holes, some maggots and flies crawling in and out of them. Ray didn't notice.]
[The rafters were covered in cobwebs. Fresh ones. Ben hung above an open space between the track. Just far enough between the rafters that he was too short to reach them and save himself. Though it was far too late for that now]
[The rafters were, as Ben has proudly told him many times, entirely sturdy and safe. He was able to make it to Ben quite easily actually. When he got close he could see that all that had actually gone wrong was a snag on a wooden board. A simple snag on some old beam placed there ages ago was all it took for the dominoes to fall and to end Benās life]
[No time. Ray quickly tried to find a way to lower him to the ground. Whatever worked. Of course the Web killed him, Ray should've known. But he didn't know quick enough. The past can't be changed. The future can be.]
[After a minute, he manages to get him down and into the light booth nestled up in the rafters. It was enough solid floor to at least be safe. Ben lays still on the ground, any signs of life gone. Just a cobweb spun on his arm and a single small spider scurrying from the scene.]
[After almost ten minutes, his heart began to beat faintly. Irregularly. The harness still pulled tightly around his chest and neck prevented him from breathing]
[Ray had been trying to cut the harness off, but he was struggling. Eventually he realizes with the sheer amount of maggots he had, he might be able to life the harness just a bit so Ben could breathe easier while he worked to figure out the weak points.]
[This plan worked, after a few minutes he was able to fully cut the harness off and Ben slowly began to breathe again. He bolted up with a gasp, clutching at his heart and looking around frantically. He seemed to realize he was in the light booth, but missed Ray entirely. He tried to stand and immediately fell back down, mumbling something about cues and spiders. He tried again. At this rate he was going to stumble out the door and tumble out of the rafters altogether. Clearly he wasnāt fully back yet]
[This seemed to snap him back into reality. He paused, looking between Ray and the door. Then his eyes finally landed on his arm. He wasnāt able to speak very well, his lungs still getting used to having space to breathe again, but what words he did manage to speak clearly sounded very worried]
[The party was set to go on for a while, and despite wanting to stay, he was starting to feel a bit lightheaded, so he settled on going home. That was, so long as Ray was coming with him]
Well you died today and I still have you, this is clearly worth celebrating! A death day cookie is a delicious treat that I grant you as a thank you for being alive despite dying.
[The show is over, and hanging above it all, still and limp, is Ben Maxx. A simple accident that was expertly planned. A harness that wound up a bit too tight in just the wrong places. Oh great, probably the place he wanted to go the least. Sure it was probably sound enough but many things could go wrong- there were so many bad things that could've happened to Ben. I mean him completely falling out wasn't the case, that's one thing crossed off. But what if he fell? Would he die too? Would Void let him? Would The Web let him?
He was overthinking this. Sure other people would likely get to him, probably first. But Oliver knew guilt would sit with him and fester if he didn't even try to make a move. So he did.
[Heād have gone up the ladder to the rafters, getting a few confused looks from the crew. When he made it up, he could clearly see Ben hanging there. All light gone from his eyes, his harness hitched on a snag in the only old board in the rafters. A simple mistake. And it had killed him.]
His heart sank as he saw Ben's body. After a few minutes he'd finally snap out of it and analyze the rafters. He decided not to take too long doing that however as overthinking was very much a risk at the moment and that would be more dangerous than just going. He's been in worse places before, shockingly. And he was still here and alive, unlike Ben. Right, Ben.
Ollie would start to clamber across the rafters, trying his best to calculate each movement so he wouldn't fall. He slowly got more confident, but not too confident, with each time he moved.
[The rafters were as safe as they could possibly be. Heād overheard Ben mention this many times, going so far as to do ridiculous things to prove it whenever someone questioned it. When Ollie got close, he could see that all that held Ben there was that single snag on the board. If it could be moved, he would end up back in the rafters.]
[The snag came loose, and Ben dropped onto the rafters, the sudden jolt of the cable stopping him from falling waking him up with a start. He swiped around frantically for the rafters, eventually catching one and managing to get himself down before collapsing onto the floor]
Ah!
[He glances up, finally seeing Ollie was there, and waved sheepishly. He looked a bit nervous as he realized they were the only two up there]
Oh. Oh dear. Oh dear I didnāt miss the last cue, did I?
"I probably can't give you an exact answer- and saying out for... let's just say that'd probably be a euphemism. Certainly a way to put it. I know what a dead man looks like, unfortunately."
"I'm pretty sure you did... honestly the dying part is what I'm the least concerned about despite what it seems like. I mean there's already one pretty bad sign."
