Benjamin George Ledger was born in Evanston, Illinois to Van and Nancy Ledger. He was the first son and younger brother to three girls and the apple of his parents’ eyes. His parents had met in Law School at Northwestern and thus set great expectations for their children’s futures. While his mother was always supportive and loving, Ben’s dad was constantly on his back about school. He was grooming him to carry on the legacy of his Chicago firm. Ben grew up very intelligent and driven, but he found more enjoyment in comic books and playing soccer rather than SAT prep and golfing. Van found it difficult to reach common ground with his son, and Ben felt lost without his approval.
Eventually Ben decided to take a soccer scholarship at Notre Dame over sitting on the waitlist at Northwestern. Ben felt the pressure of a career he never wanted, until he found a passion for teaching while working as a soccer coach throughout his freshman year. He immediately switched his major to Education and the light at the end of the tunnel finally appeared. He thrived in the teaching program and was on track to earning his masters when the unthinkable happened. At twenty-three years old, Ben became a father to a three month old baby girl. Her mother had been a summer fling of Ben’s and gave up her rights when she was arrested for drugs . Though his name was on her birth certificate and the resemblance was undeniable, Ben was completely blindsided by his paternity, as he was never even told of a pregnancy. Nevertheless, he took his daughter home that same night.
Raising Quinn was the hardest thing Ben had ever done, but he was determined to be a good father and support her through anything. He graduated with his Masters in Education with an emphasis in History when Quinn was days shy of two years old. The two of them were peas in a pod, and Ben couldn’t imagine his life without his baby girl. He soon moved to Indianapolis and took a teaching job at a college preparatory school. It was his dream job with a good salary and even better benefits.
When Quinn turned three, her mother began trying to contact Ben. First through his parents and then eventually through his school. The administration was less than fond of this harassment and as a result, fired Ben. Not knowing what to do, Ben applied to random teaching positions around the country, but since it was the middle of the school year, not many were willing to hire someone from out of state. Finally he got an email from the VP of a high school in Colorado, Bradford Springs. They were desperate to fill the position so Ben accepted the job and didn’t look back.
Now, three years later, the same thing may be happening again. He can’t confirm that it is her, but Ben has been getting random emails from an IP address in Missouri and is worried it might be Quinn’s mom.
