I feel like this entire phenomenon of “SHUT UP LOKI NOBODY WANTS TO LISTEN TO YOU”, besides the sort of mean chuckle at his expense that makes me feel guilty, is fascinating. With giant angst potential that explains a lot about how Loki looks at himself and why he snaps.

No, seriously. Imagine that this sort of thing has been going on for hundreds or thousands of years. Whenever Loki opens his mouth to speak, or share an opinion, or make a suggestion, or voice an objection, there’s a good chance he’ll basically get told he’s insignificant or irrelevant or reprehensible or just flat out wrong. Stop talking. Yeah, he’s a manipulative little shit, but seriously. His words are his biggest source of power. He’s not an up front fighter—his forte lies through persuasion and the ability to reason people into the decisions that suit him. And he’s perpetually being told “YOUR ABILITIES ARE WORTHLESS, GTFO WE DON’T WANT YOU”. So even the thing he thought he was good at is being undermined.

Extra bonus points if you incorporate canon mythology and the “sew his lips up” punishment. I mean just DAMN. Physical pain and the approval of his father in that sentence aside, that literally, physically denies his right to assert or defend himself. He completely loses his voice. He’s basically having it hammered home that people would rather not hear him at all, would rather pretend he’s not there, and he can’t even count on his family to disagree.

It’s just unbelievably fucked up.

SHIT. I hadn't consciously made the connection between the fact that Loki is always overlooked and ignored when he speaks and the fact that he’s put in that muzzle at the end of Avengers. I always thought that bit was a link to the bit from Norse mythology where he had his mouth sewn up as punishment for teasing some dude (details elude me right now). But this.

This makes sense.

And makes so many more feels.

It’s like the ultimate insult to him.

This scene was heartbreaking. Look what Loki did to the cell. But especially what he did to himself. He is in so much pain from Frigga dying that he took it out on anything he could which includes his own body. The Aesir didn’t give him a chance to grieve in a healthy way, they didn’t let him go to the fucking funeral so he hurt himself in his grief. Even here, he tries to get Thor to acknowledge it, to answer his questions and he shuts him down. What’s even worse is that Loki tried to hide it. He tried to make Thor think he was okay. But when Thor called him out on it, Loki stripped everything away and let Thor seen how much pain he was in. Loki is so vulnerable here and Thor uses it against him. I know you’re in pain but I want you to use that pain to help me and Jane. Loki didn’t die for their father’s approval. He died for Frigga. He did everything for Frigga.

This scene is SOOOOO important and so few people are talking about it. WHY? Seriously. If you want any proof that he’s not completely in control the whole movie, here it is. Loki is just a pawn with big plans who has gotten himself into huge shit and can’t get out of it. And this scene makes it pretty fucking obvious that they’ve been torturing and manipulating him and are threatening to make it a thousand times worse.

I should probably just post my insane 5k essay I’ve written on how fucked up Loki is in this film. Because I’ve just got a lot of feelings.

The look in his eyes says it all. It’s pure fear, which is something he isn’t used to. Whatever the hell they did to him is haunting him, and that’s why he is so desperate to make sure his plan succeeds. Come on, at the start of the film he looks terrible. He looks so sick and like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He’s desperate.

Sigh. Oh my feels.

YEAH. And this scene pretty much sums up his entire character. He acts like he’s in control, but he’s not, and he’s never been. He has no fucking CLUE what he’s doing. He’s just acting out and pretending he doesn’t care to get back at Thor, which is really ironic because it shows that he DOES care. In fact, that’s all he cares about.

But he’s never had a place, and like Coulson says, he lacks conviction. He doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing. He’s just trying to pretend like he has it all together - which he clearly doesn’t. So he ends up doing things for others. Becoming what others want of him or what others think of him.

He’s just searching for an identity he’s never had.

People tell me that Loki’s a bad person, but fucking look at him. He’s in pain, not in control. He’s trying, but it can’t be easy. Look at the bags under his eyes. If the Avengers couldn’t be in a room with the staff for 5 minutes without getting angrier than normal, and Bruce even grabbing the staff, imagine how it is for Loki, who’s right next to it all the time. Look at Loki from Thor, and then look at the person writing the movie. Joss Whedon never makes things one dimensional; they’re always more than they seem. He’s not just throwing, a hissy-fit, he wouldn’t try to destroy Midgard on his own.
