I'm thinking that they must have some type of bond, considering just *how* upset Silver was about him leaving. Given the time and circumstance, it's pretty likely he was referring to Giovanni like that because he's both upset and angry with him for it. And since Silver was like...7-8 at the time, it's not exactly uncommon for kids his age to start acting up like that when angry regardless of ethnicity. Regardless though, I like to pretend they did no matter what fjdjfksksjd
I agree with your wholeheartedly about there being some kind of bond. For a young child a parent is their whole world (parents become uncool when the kids are slightly older after all), so I can undestand Silverās outburst. If he can speak this freely infront of Giovanni, then we can assume that itās nothing out of odrdinary for them, and theyāre pretty civil about each other.
In some previous ask I talked about gameverse Silver, whoās slightly different from Generationās one. Personally, I interpet his ingame dialogue as full of anger. Generations gives us a different interpetation - Silverās full of emotions and heās more sad and disappointed than angry, which puts his relationship with Giovanni in a different view and lets us question it. Ā
But Iāve got a beef with Generations Giovanni. I really dislike his portrayal as emotionless, stone faced robot. Origins did him justice, and I wish he was more like his smirky, energetic, over confident and charismatic counterpart (who I believe would be a really fun dad, so seeing him give up would break my heart too). Iād love to see Generations Gio get slightly angry, or to see him show some disdain, or any other reaction when Silver ran off. Instead we got this unblinking statue.
Like, hello? Your world is crumbling infront of you! Do you even care?
In the German dub of Pokemon generations Silver calls Giovanni "Vati", which is often used between children and their fathers that have a close bond, so you're likely right about their family not being broken. At least at the time it wasn't.
Bless you German translator for giving us hope for these two. Though, if Giovanni and Silver really had had a close bond, I would be quite confused. Just seeing how easily they parted their ways can say a lot about the fundamentals of their relationship.
I'm not an expert when it comes to Japanese terms of endearment, so take anything I say with a grain of salt, but when Silver met Looker, he referred to Giovanni as "oyaji", which can be translated to something like old man or boss depending on who's speaking. You can say it's just an informal way to refer to a father - not very polite, and typical for teenagers, so under all these circumstances it's quite understandable why Giovanni isn't referred to as tou-san or at least oyaji-san by Silver, as their father-son bond is already severed.
And now throwback to our little wee Silver from the flashback, whose first word when he spots Giovanni is... oyaji, again. There are many ways to refer to your parent in Japanese, so why stick to this one? Why would a child refer to him so informally (especially when we know Japan is big on honorifics) at such a young age? (Maybe he heard someone from Team Rocket refer to their boss this way? :D) Was it the first time Silver referred to Giovanni so impolitely or is it a form of endearment they use?
I don't know any native Japanese or people who seriously study Japanese, who could confirm whether oyaji is a neutral term or not, but if someone's got something to add on the subject, feel free to do so.
