there’s a lot of shit on here about lighting candles and waking up early to see the sunset and if we are being hella honest, no one actually does that. u probably don’t own candles or if u do there in a closet and the only time you wake up early all year round is never. so here’s a guide to actual human beings.

in the studyblr community, hermione granger (s/o to all the hp fans) is admired and seen as an inspiration. from her work ethic to her witty remarks, what’s not to love? I love hermione so much and decided to post this to help you channel your inner hermione in terms of studying, productivity, and work

motivation

you’ve got to have something that pushes you or motivates you to work so hard, or you’ll tend to find yourself asking what’s the point and giving up quite often. most people’s motivation spring from family, future aspirations, proving something, etc.

discipline

you need to achieve discipline in order to stay on track. try not to scroll through instagram or text cindy while writing your essay for world history. download apps like self control or forest to prevent you from getting too distracted. discipline comes in handy when motivation just isn’t pushing you. when you just don’t want to study, the discipline you’ve set for yourself will help you to do so. it takes a while to develop a strong sense of discipline, so start little by little! for example, set a time for you to study for twenty minutes everyday and gradually build from there!

develop a system

hermione seems to always have her shiz together, and so can you! develop a study and organization system to keep yourself together and to work efficiently. create systems for how you study math, or how you take notes in world history. how to you keep your notes together? loose leaf or notebook?

passion

okay, this may tie in to motivation, but it still is considerably important! you have to have the passion for what motivates you to study. whether it be becoming a nurse to help ease patient’s lives or an entrepreneur to better impact this world or even to just love learning! use that to fuel your endeavors and kick butt! :)

use your time efficiently

most of us have a life outside of academics, and that sometimes leaves us in a time crunch when it comes to studying. that’s why learning to efficiently study and use your time wisely is crucial! ride the bus to school? read your textbook or go through some flashcards! siblings taking too long to get ready? get those notes out! riding back home? do that homework!

I think the key to college imo is discipline. If you set a routine for yourself it makes it easier to get work done.

- take small steps. College is a big adjustment so divide your workload up and start off by picking off small breaks during the day to get it done. So for example start off with an hour and then build it up over time to two, three etc.

- use all your time wisely. If you have any awkward gaps begeeen your timetable use them to get some work done. If you use the breaks between class you’re more likely to get work done rather than in the evening when you may be more tired/fed up with work

- plan your day the night before. If you have a realistic list of all the things you want to get done you’ll be more likely to do them rather than making up what you have to do on the spot

“Dude, you haven’t gone outside in a while.” “Yeah, last time I went out I got this wicked sunburn.”

“Are you still up?” “Yeah, I started bing watching this show on Netflix.”

Who can resist reading another little post full of tips to help you get more work done? Here is a few things that I find useful when trying to get myself motivated.

Clear desk, clear mind - I like to organise things before I start working. If things are messy, I get a little preoccupied and procrastinate even more. My suggestion is clear your desk, sort everything you’ll need to study and get on!

The two minute rule - If a task that needs to be done takes less than two minutes, just do it. My dad has often suggested that this is a great way to sort out your priorities and so far it has worked for me. Things like check my emails, cross off events from my planner, file something away don’t take long but get you in the mood for productivity. As they say “object in motion, stay in motion”.

Break your time up - Schedule your study time and any breaks you need to take. This helps structure your day and acts as a motivation to get things done. Especially if you can reward yourself at the end!

Leave your phone alone - Like most people I use my phone constantly but when I’m trying to work, it is best to leave it alone. Out of sight, out of mind. Try leaving it on silent and behind you so you aren’t tempted to pick it up after every beep. Use your break times to check it.

Find your top three to five priorities - Seeing a long list of things to do is usually, for some people, kind of counterproductive. Figure out the main things that need to be done and work on those. If you’re able to complete those main things, you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished the days necessities and may even want to complete some more.

Try using a mindmap instead of a to do list - Apparently using a mindmap layout instead of a traditional list can help boost productivity. It is a little more funky way to see all your outstanding tasks and might not look as overwhelming as a super long list.

Wear headphones - You don’t have to always listen to things but it can help block out any noise that can distract you. If you’re someone that likes some music, try songs with little or no words. This is a great playlist by Spotify.

Don’t multitask - As much as you think you can do it, trying to multitask usually ends up in a confused mess and takes twice the time. Stick to one task at a time. If you think of something you need to do, write it down and do it later.

Change things up - Doing the same things in the same place can get boring. Make the effort every now and then to change where you’re studying or how you’re studying. This can include moving your studying from the desk to the kitchen table for a change of scenery, or making flash cards instead of annotating your notes. Studying with a family member or friends is a fun way to get some work done!

Be positive - Most people have times when they just don’t want to study or anything, it is natural. However it is not worth sitting staring at your books in an unmotivated mood just waiting to feel inspired. If you’re not feeling it, do something else for a while. Come back to it a bit later and have another go. Usually walking away and coming back is all you need to feel more productive.

Hi!! I understand, procrastination likes to get the best of us! My biggest piece of advice to you is to figure out why you’re procrastinating. Is it because something’s distracting you? Are you scared to start because you’re a perfectionist? Is there too much work and you dont know where to start? If you figure out why you’re procrastinating, it’s easier to figure out how to change that by targeting the source of the problem! Some other general advice:

- clean up your study space, organize your materials and just start with whatever piece of work excites you the most. For me, I like doing math homework, so whenever I’m overloaded, I start with that, and then once I’m started I can keep going.

- prioritize by due date if you have to

- sometimes it helps to do smaller tasks first

- make a to do list to clear your mind. If something’s worrying you, write that down too. Empty your mind, THEN start.

- remind yourself of why you need to study. Why you WANT to study.

- sometimes, you just have to make yourself start, even if your progress is slow
