Honestly though, I feel like it kinda fits for him to be a bad therapist. The whole point of the comics are a group of lunatics who come together to go on a seemingly pointless mission and end up failing successfully. Everyone’s a hot mess fuckup, all in different ways, but the message is that they still all have worth(see comic page at the end of this post).

Even if Rung pressures too hard sometimes or says the wrong thing at the wrong time, he always puts the patient first and genuinely tries to understand and help them get better. He’s THERE for people. And that’s a really important aspect of healing especially with people like Whirl, Red Alert and Fort Max who have very little support. Sometimes having someone who cares about you, wants to succeed and looks forward to seeing you can be enough to keep people afloat.

If a shitty therapist who actually lost his licenses several millennia ago is the only person who treats you like a decent Cybertronian being, then maybe that’s enough for now. Sure you still have your millions years of ptsd, suicidal ideation and personality disorders but you’re getting through the day without seriously harming yourself or others.

Rung was someone(probably the only person) Red relied on through his delusions and when that anchor was gone he felt isolated once more and tried to protect himself in the only way he thought would work.

Even though Whirl could tell that Rung was fed of with him sometimes, and would actively provoke him, he still felt that Rung was a friend, someone he trusted and cared for.

So yeah maybe he’s not good at being a therapist, but he’s sure as hell good enough.
