You know, they really paid attention to small details in The Nightmare Before Christmas. The lighting - for one. Every moment shared between Jack and Sally together feels so different than the other scenes in the movie. The lighting is special. The scenes appear to be glowing. Their kiss scene, especially, really feels soft to see. There’s something romantic about the music that plays when they’re together. Just by watching the shift in lighting and mood, you can tell that Jack and Sally shared something special throughout the movie.
Not to mention that Jack speaks softer with Sally than he does with any other character in the movie. He purposely lowered his tone when she came to him for her assignment, and he speaks with such passion and care when approaching her at the Spiral Hill. That’s something that you just can’t ignore.
That butterfly that emerged when Sally delivered Jack the basket matched these scenes, too. There’s a hint of chemistry right then and there - something that feels different from the movie, something romantic. Sally’s longing look and Jack’s concern when she’s not there really shows us that they both have a connection outside that we can’t see. That they have a building relationship outside the events of the movie, and it shows very subliminally.
There’s something about the moments between them that make it feel like they’re separated from the movie. That the times they are alone, it’s shared only between Jack and Sally. I could watch their scenes a million times over. There’s a lot of certain details to the moments between Jack/Sally that make sure that the romance is there and it’s alive. Details that get overlooked by many fans.
