the ~magical~ soft drink that boosts all your psychic powers. It’s the amethyst of soda and not just because it’s purple! (though that does help) Drink it before/during divination, spirit work, or any magic that relies on your connection with other, higher powers.

is the soda of justice, in a way. It’s good for tearing down enemies, breaking off relationships, or good old fashioned hexing. It’s also helpful in a less malicious ways, like bindings and mirror spells.

is a soda of fortune and wealth, and you should drink it if you need to get a job or come into money somehow. Or, for general luck, and general success.

represents identity and boosts confidence. If you’re dong any introspection, it can help connect you to your true self. If you’re using a glamour, it will assist in keeping up the appearance you’re trying to achieve.  Drink it before performances ( though not right before, because soda isn’t great for the voice.) or when you’re meeting someone new.

Strawberry Soda is a soda of romance and love! Drink it to invite new relationships into your love life. If that’s not your style, drink it to promote self-love! You deserve to treat yo self.

Unlike my previous posts, this is all based on my own UPG and not a post that’s divided into known lore surrounding the species and then my personal experience working with them. 

Acknowledge and respect the stone spirits. When you treat the rocks you work with as actual persons instead of simple tools or energy sources, your work with them will become so much deeper. Listen to what they have to say to you. Never try to use stones without their consent. Do things for them, make offerings - they’ll be much more eager to help you when your relationship is reciprocal. Listen. Learn from them, not just about them. They’re wonderful teachers.

iNaturalist: Take photos of living things you see, post them, and the community will identify them for you. Data from iNaturalist is used in scientific research.

Wildflower.org Plant Database: Enter search criteria and find some plants. Very useful if you're looking for plants with specific qualities or know what you have in mind.

Native Plant Finder: This website is still in beta and is a work in progress, but it will show you plants for your area ranked by the number of butterflies that use them for their caterpillars.

WildflowerSearch: AMAZING resource for identification and for learning about new plants. Shows you where plants are native/not native, TONS of search filters.

When you create a Thoughtform, try having it physically living inside of a flash drive containing other spells and charms that work well with what the thoughtform’s purpose is. Since that flash drive essentially is a thoughtform, you can add files for that thoughtform to “program” it, such as adding a picture of what it looks like, or what it’s purpose is, or really anything you associate with the thoughtform. You can also “reprogram” the thoughtform just by changing the files in the flash drive.

This is a great question!! And I’m sure it’s something that many people struggle with. You can use divination to try and discern the nature of what you’re working with, and from my experience, here’s some key differences:

Imaginary Friend:• They have little to no energy, hardly distinct • You made a conscious decision to create them • You can control what they say, what they do etc • Nothing they say really surprises you, their knowledge is limited to yours• Others cannot interact with them • Cannot interact with this plane

Thoughtforms:• Easily confused with imaginary friends, and it’s entirely possible for imaginary friends to become thoughtforms! • Not always consciously created, but can be (eg: servitors)• Have some distinct energy that can be built upon• Depending on their energy source, they can have different knowledge and say surprising things• It’s hard to control what they say or do, if you can at all• Don’t feel as ‘stable’ as a spirit would. (Remember it’s completely okay to work with thoughtforms as you would a spirit!)

Spirit:• Distinct energy, varies from spirit to spirit• Not consciously created at all• They are completely spontaneous and have their own free will, intelligence etc• Cannot be controlled in terms of speech or actions• Able to teach you things you didn’t previously know• Able to interact with this plane on a higher degree than a thoughtform.

Spirit work is such a fulfilling practice. And yet, as rewarding as it is, it can also be incredibly harmful. We are used to seeing warning posts about entities that do jarringly obvious terrible things. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking this is the only sort of danger that might come from spirit work as a practice. However, emotional/ psychological abuse is also (unfortunately) common and can be deeply damaging.

This is a list of some red-flags to look out for when working with an entity.

1. They tell you power/ success can only be achieved through following them. They reject/ mock/ belittle all other spiritual paths and proclaim their way to be The One True Way.

2. They isolate you and block you from communicating with other entities and/ or people. They might say that “your path is a lonely one”. “You only need them.” “Your relationship must remain a secret.” “They are only doing it for your own good.”

3. They discourage you from looking after your mental health, physical health, emotional, and social well-being. They might say that “if you use medications your powers will wane.” Or that “having a social life will distract you from your spiritual path.”

4. They do things without your consent, over and over again, regardless of the impact it has on your health and emotional well-being. Discussions on boundaries are ignored.

5. They nurture feelings of codependency and paranoia. They will tell you “you only need them” while also belittling all outside sources. They might discourage critical thinking, safe discernment practices, and healthy interactions with other members of the spiritual community.

6. They get angry if you question them. They punish you for attempting to better understand yourself or your own spiritual practice.

7. They claim that your spirituality and intrinsic fulfillment both hinge on working with them.

8. They claim only they can give you what you truly want, or they offer things that sound “too good to be true”.

9. Interacting with them consistently makes you feel sick, tired, emotionally and physically drained, afraid, etc.

10. You notice yourself losing grip of your “real life” as they continue to push you to delve deeper into the occult.

11. They encourage unsafe spirit work practices

12. They want you to enter into a contract or to devote yourself without discussion. They also want you to do this very quickly.

13. They place unreasonable boundaries and expectations on your relationship.

14. They gaslight you and/ or do not hold their end of a bargain/ contract.

15. They threaten your safety and well-being or the safety and well-being of your loved ones.

I’m going to be frank. If you find it impossible to hear, feel, get in contact with spirits in any kind of way - you need to figure out how to do that the best way you can first. You can not get to know a spirit if you cannot receive any feedback from them. This doesn’t mean you need the specific talent of being able to hear them, but you need to be able to receive feedback SOMEHOW. Whether this be through divination, meditation, or dreams: you need some means of being able to communication two-way with a spirit.

Spirit What’s?

So you’ve seen the term “spirit companion” get tossed around online. What is a spirit companion? How does this even work? Do you need a companion to become the best witch/astral traveler/seer you can be? (No, you don’t). There are so many choices to choose from that it may be a little daunting at first. You can purchase a vessel with a spirit already attached to it online. I’ve done this! It’s great! If you find a REPUTABLE seller who truthfully is able to talk to spirits and create a perfect match, I highly recommend this. However, if you’re tight on cash, you’re just too afraid to trust anybody, or you want to experience finding your own companion from the start - then here is a way you can do it yourself. As always, just because you read something on the internet that somebody wrote doesn’t mean it’s the only way to do things. You are in charge of how you do things, not me.

This will not include instructions on how to communicate with spirits. It will not include instructions on protection/grounding/centering during meditation. This guide is assuming you know how to already do these things. I’ll be happy to help if you have a hard time with any of these activities to the best of my ability.

First thing is first.

What is a spirit companion? Well, a spirit companion is you! That is, if you choose to be the companion of a spirit. It is also the name of a spirit who is a companion OF you. When you choose to form a bond with a spirit (or energy, as I prefer to call those on other planes), you both are each other’s spirit companions and you form a spirit companionship. You do not need a spirit companion. Spirit companions are good for those who enjoy working with other energies. Personally, I can’t stand to walk my path alone. I need deities, dragons, SOMEONE! So the concept of spirit companions are great for someone like me.

How do I start?

What kind of practice do you do? Think about your type of craft. Write down all of the aspects you incorporate into your work. Are you big on divination? Write it down. Do you enjoy blood magic (as I do)? Write it down. Also think about things that you would like to learn more about. Your spirit companion can be a mentor to you. Do you need a spirit to help you banish negativity in your life? Write it down. Spirit companions can be protectors. Find what attributes you want to find the most in a spirit companion and put those at the top of your list. You can’t find a spirit companion that does EVERYTHING you want it to on your list (or maybe you can, you lucky bastard), so pick the most important things. It’s important to find things that resonate deepest with you. 

Phew! You have everything you’re looking for written down. Now it’s time to dig deep into your mind. What type of spirit are you drawn to? Do you have an affinity for mermaids? Unicorns? There is a reason for this. Take note of it! Decide on what kind of spirit you want to become a companion with and head on to the next section.

Research, research, research.

You’ve picked out the type of spirit you would like to work with, and you have your top attributes that you would like to have in common with them. Do your research.

This is the most important thing you can possibly do to ensure that you and the type of spirit you are seeking are compatible. Before working with a deity, you research all you can about them. Before creating a spell, you research every component to make sure it all fits. The same will apply when you choose to reach out to a spirit. Are mermaids known for their skills in divination? Hell if I know! I work with dragons! But you should know, or try to find out if you’re jonesin’ for a divination-savvy mermaid. If there are no solid sources on the internet for the picking, you can ask people that already work with the type of spirit you are interested in. Get a feel for the spirit that you are drawn to. Make sure they are truly the type of energy you want around, rather than relying on a romantacized version of their lore.

Gettin’ Friendly

You’ve decided on everything now. You’ve written down what you want your ideal spirit companion to be. It is time to call out and seek an entity that fits the criteria you have decided on!  It is so very important to take proper precaution while calling out to an entity. If you are not familiar with grounding, centering, and setting up protection against negative entities (or any entity you don’t wish to get in contact with) - I suggest you stop reading this and get familiar with those skills. The realms of this universe are filled with beings that are adept at lying about what they are. It’s just a fact of life. These beings aren’t necessarily ALL malevolent, but they aren’t what you are looking for. Be strong in stating your purpose.

When I was seeking out my first dragon companion, I meditated (with protection) and literally stated what I was looking for out to the big ole wide world and all the planes that resided within it. In my case, the dragon that kept appearing to me ended up to be on a site where I bought my vessel (he drew me to that site). But this isn’t a guide for buying one, is it? This is for finding one on your own.

When you make a new friend, how does that process usually go for you? Do you get to know each other slowly at first and soon start to grow closer? Or do you immediately say “hey I like you even though we haven’t talked much…now I’m going to bind your energy signature to this necklace k thanks”. No, you don’t. You get to know them! Spirits are real beings. They are alive and they too are looking for a companion so THEY can learn. They will want to get to know you as much as you should want to get to know them. Spend time meditating with them. Find out what they enjoy as an offering and try to offer them their favorite thing. Create a bond. It will feel natural, and you will know if it is meant to be. If they keep insisting you should create a companionship with them but YOU don’t want to - cut ties with them. You’re in for a manipulative ride if you stick with a spirit who doesn’t respect your feelings on the subject. The same goes for you. If they politely back out after you’ve spent time meditating with them, then it’s not meant to be. If anything feels wrong, listen to your gut. This is my mantra. Always listen to your intuition. You should feel safe and calm around them. Not panicky and worried.

You and Me (and this item that reminds me of you)

So you have found your spirit companion and you want to bind their energy signature to something. This will allow you to have a tangible item you can hold and focus on to create a link between you two. It is the same thing as having their twitter handle, so you may contact them at any time (they won’t always answer, though. Remember - they have lives too!). They are not stuck inside the vessel. They can leave the relationship anytime they want. YOU can end the relationship anytime you want, if you feel it isn’t working out. There are no oaths, no bound souls, nothing of that sort. When binding their energy signatures to a vessel, first make sure you two have discussed it and it is what you both want. Find a piece of jewelry or create a plush doll or ANYTHING that will remind you of them. You can make it as personal as you want! Make sure to use something that won’t perish. For example, don’t bind them to a plant. Not only are you shoving their energy all up on a plant’s energy, the plant could die leaving you with no vessel. I prefer jewelry because I can wear it and bond with them.

Take your item and plan a ritual that will invoke them and bind their energy signature to the item. Your ritual can be as formal or informal as you want. Write a poem for them! Bring them offerings! Play your favorite music that reminds you of them! It’s all up to you, my friend. You do not make an oath to them, you do not make any lifelong promises: you just simply tell them how you feel and the reasoning for the ritual. Using phrases such as “we will be bound forever” is not the best thing to do. No one wants to be bound forever. That’s dangerous territory and typically not realistic (for this type of situation - that doesn’t mean people don’t bind themselves to entities forever. It happens! But not here). You can say something along the lines of how the vessel you are presenting will be a direct link to them until either one of you decides that you do not wish to work with each other anymore. In the way that there is no written contract that friendships will last forever, the same goes for you and your spirit companion. It is a mutual agreement, built on mutual respect.

Once you have finished the ritual, you now have a direct link to your companion. Continue to treat them like your friend. Invite them to help you when you’re doing a spell or divination (or whatever specialty you were looking for them to have). Give them gifts, talk to them, meditate with them. They are not forced to be around you. If they aren’t showing up or do not wish to partake in a spell with you, than that’s just how they feeling at the moment. There is no forcing either from you or them. As I said, you should treat each other with mutual respect.

This was originally supposed to be a post on my spirit shop’s blog - but it closed unexpectedly. I have been requested to post this on my own blog, instead, since a lot of people liked it.

Humans have this peculiar habit of seeing what they want to see. You start looking for something, and suddenly you see the thing everywhere - it’s like when you buy a new car, never having recognized that car before, and suddenly it seems like every car on the road is the same model as yours. These ordinary things were there all along, but, now that you’re more aware of them, everything seems magical - and this is even more true when entering a new field of practice where things really are magical, like witchcraft and spirit work. This is why the key skill of discernment is so critical - to be able to separate the mundane from the otherworldly. When it is so easy to trick your brain into seeing the supernatural, how do you know when it’s really happening?

What’s that big word mean?

Discernment: the ability to evaluate information or situations to determine the underlying truth, the “real” from the “fake”, the “right” from the “wrong”. It is centered around an acuteness of judgment and understanding (x, x).

Okay, now you know what it technically means - you’ve got the dictionary definition under your belt. But why is this important for spirit work?

In the context of spirit work, discernment is used to define whether or not your experiences are “real”. It also plays a part in determining whether or not the spirits you are working with are safe or whether or not they are telling the truth. Discernment is also a critical component of vetting - verifying the identity of the spirit over the course of several months.

Though this may seem opposite to the entire point of discerning, I have personally found that strengthening my discernment skills has made it easier to notice when a spirit is attempting to interact with me. Since I have trained myself so heavily into seeking out all worldly explanations first, I have learned how to distinguish a spirit much more clearly - because sometimes there really is no worldly explanation for what happened. By teaching myself how to tell when my brain is just tricking me, I’m much more capable of determining what’s real.

This is something gained through practice and experience and is, in my opinion, a massively undervalued skill. It takes patience, practice, and time. So much time. This is why it can be so difficult to learn, and, more often than not, you end up learning the hard way why it is so important.

How can I tell if the “spirit” is just something ordinary?

Have you eaten enough? Have you had enough water to drink?

Did you take your medication, if you have any?

Did you get enough sleep?

Do you have any mental or physical illnesses or disorders? Does the “sign” you’re receiving from the spirit correspond to one of your symptoms? Do some personal evaluation!

Is there any physical explanation outside of yourself for the sign you have received? Ask questions like: Is the radio on in the other room? Is your neighbor outside mowing the lawn? Is this animal that I am “suddenly” seeing a lot of and interpreting as a sign actually just more active this time of year? Did someone just walk by wearing way too much perfume?

Do things happen when you think of them? If so, it’s possible you might be placebo-ing yourself into believing a spirit is causing this. Spirits act of their own accord.

If your answer to these questions after investigations was a firm “no” across the board, there could really be a spirit around. This is not a guaranteed way to tell, but the first step to spirit work is to remember that not everything is a spirit - sometimes it’s just your grandmother sneezing in the other room. You need to entirely rule out the mundane before assuming the supernatural.

Okay, I proved that it’s not something “normal” - but how do I learn how to sense and discern?

This is a difficult question to address, because sensing and discerning spirits varies so greatly from individual to individual. The only way to really tell if what you are experiencing is a spirit is through a lot of experience and trial-and-error.

Some simple pointers:

Investigate the “signs” you are receiving. Is there a pattern? If you ask for a specific sign (ex: “Show me three [animal that is not commonly seen in your area] in three days.”), does it show? Write everything down. Signs do not always appear within a few days - they could play out slowly, over a period of months, and you could miss them entirely.

Are you able to distinguish the difference between your own internal mental chatter and the voice of a spirit? This takes lots of time and practice, but it is a major component of spirit telepathy. Learn your own speech pattern and mannerisms - an actual spirit’s speech patterns and mannerisms are not likely to match up exactly to your own. Try this: listen to what a spirit is supposedly saying to you, and then attempt to repeat it exactly. Does it come out sounding garbled or feeling off? It might have legitimately been a spirit. If you are able to replicate their voice, tone, and words exactly, it may have just been your own brain trying to trick you.

Focus on learning how to differentiate energy signatures. A spirit may be able to change their physical appearance, but it is incredibly unlikely they will be able to change their entire energy signature - these are as unique as a fingerprint and equally as difficult to cover up. Here’s some ways that energy can be sensed. Look up some exercises. Practice this as much as possible.

Attempt to communicate. This will also take lots of practice - keep going!

Use different methods of communication (telepathy, tarot, pendulum, scrying, astral travel, the list goes on…) to verify what the spirit is saying. One method is not enough. Cross-reference the spirit’s answers across the different methods used and see if everything lines up. If it does, you’ve got a real spirit on your hands. If everything seems jumbled and reads almost like gibberish, the spirit may not be present, but they also may not be communicating.

How do I determine if a spirit is telling the truth?

This is something that comes mainly through experience. No matter the species, energy alignment, or affiliation, spirits can and will lie to you.

Any spirit who is interested in working with you (or with any human) should be patient and understanding about the fact that you might have a little trouble believing if you are really hearing them - communicating to a physical being while you’re on a non-physical plane can be tricky, after all. If they really want to work with you, they’ll be willing to wait through the vetting and discernment process for you to properly detect them, get to know them, and determine if they are safe and honest about who they are and what they are capable of.

In addition, even if they are telling the truth, they may not have the best intentions. Evaluate what they want out of the working relationship. Does it make you uncomfortable? Does it seem realistic and achievable? Are they attempting to use you as a way to advance themselves or get out of a bad personal situation?

In the words of grumpylokeanelder:

Educate yourself on manipulation tactics. There are a lot of techniques out there. Gaslighting is very common. People write and publish books on the art of influencing and manipulating people for all sorts of purposes. Social engineering and mindhacks are very real. The more educated you are on the techniques used, the more you’ll know what to watch for, and the more likely it is that you’ll avoid toxic people or groups.

If a spirit came to you and claimed that they’ve known you your entire life and had secretly been guarding and guiding you, would you believe them? Would you immediately trust a spirit who randomly appeared and started claiming to have been your best friend, partner, or mentor in a past life? The answer should be no - every single time, without fail. It’s very important to remember that spirits are not all-knowing, all-powerful beings. Do not trust blindly. Do not just “take [their] word for it”. Consider: why is the spirit coming to you, and why now? They could be telling the truth, but you do not want to rush things and assume. If they are truthful, they’ll be patient.  Spirits could mislead you, and they could use your blind belief and trust in them to manipulate you. If a spirit shows up in your house and acts like you are destined to be friends and you enthusiastically accept their offer, you could be setting yourself up for much more danger than you know. Malicious spirits are not always outright malicious.

Take. Your. Time. Do not rush this. Jumping to conclusions and rushing the vetting process - which discernment is a major part of - can give a spirit the opportunity to trick you. It’s easy to put on a disguise and pretend to be someone else for a few weeks; it’s much harder to keep that act going for several months. When communicating with a spirit, it is also very important to avoid having a god or hero complex, thinking you will be the “best” for the spirit and by working with them you are “saving” them - and it’s important to not allow them to have that same mentality about you.

Doubt is healthy. Doubt can prevent a potentially traumatic spirit-related experience. Don’t be afraid to have a normal amount of doubt.

How does this apply to vetting and conjuring?

Are you a conjurer and/or a spirit companion shop owner? Great! This section is for you.

You, the conjurer, the shop owner - you are responsible for the safety of everyone who works through you, both human and spirit. This is very important to know before you even open your conjuring service. You need to be willing to put in the work - and this does not mean giving it the bare minimum. Your discernment skills need to be sharp, and your vetting needs to be intense. Any spirit who is truly willing to pursue companionship will be willing to go through this process - but you need to be insistent on making them go through the extent of it. If someone is meeting their future companion through your service, it is entirely on your end to do all of the discernment before they even leave you. Do not rush a spirit out - this could take months, or even years. It will be worth it. Take your time.

And the thing is, you shouldn’t be rushing spirits out. If you’re so impatient to throw up the listing of a spirit that you can’t fathom taking the time to get to know them for three months then I have to question how much you actually care. It might seem mean, but a shopkeeper should be willing to wait months and even years to match the spirit with the perfect person. By the time you post the listing of the spirit, you should be close friends with the spirit yourself. How else are you going to know what would truly be best for the spirit if you barely even know them past superficial friendships? And how else are you going to ensure that the spirit is safe if you barely took the time to get to know them?

But we also need to talk about an excuse that’s cropped up before in opposition to intensive vetting methods and that is how intensive vetting “hurts the spirit’s feelings”. If a spirit objects to undergoing a long vetting process then that should be taken as a red flag, not as you hurting their feelings. The intensive vetting is a necessity in assuring that the spirit is safe and when a spirit won’t agree to that then it’s easy to assume that the spirit wouldn’t be safe. Also, as mean as it sounds, the spirit’s feelings on whether or not they’re vetted shouldn’t matter. You have a responsibility to your customers to make sure that the spirit is fit for companionship, shirk that responsibility for any reason and you could very well be putting someone’s life in danger.

You are putting a spirit in someone’s inner wards, usually a beginner’s inner wards, and they’re someone who trusts you when you say that the spirit is safe. Don’t take advantage of someone’s trust in you just because you don’t want to put in the effort for an intensive vetting process when you chose to be a spirit shopkeeper.  

(Read this post. Incorporate this into your practice. You should be settling for nothing less. If something happens that should have been discovered during the vetting process, it is your fault and is a sign that your process and practice has failed your client.)

Spirit work takes time. Vetting and discernment take a lot of time. If you are willing to learn and build a relationship with a spirit, and if you want to stay safe and avoid being someone’s lunch, you will need to be willing to put in the time and effort. Do not trust without questioning, even several months down the road of vetting. Take notes, and check everything the spirit says against those notes. Are there any discrepancies, or does their story just not make sense?

Leave no gaps. Take no shortcuts. By the time the vetting and discernment process ends, you should know the spirit well enough to call them a close friend.

What is a thoughtform?

A thoughtform is a mass of energy given form, thought, and purpose by the creator. Their form and label depends on the creator of what purpose they take. It takes time and energy to create a thoughtform. You don’t just think of a character and wink them into existence. It’s your intention and energy spent to put into creation of a thoughtform that gives it a purpose, a face, a personality, etc. They are limited by what the creator knows even if given traits of having known something the creator doesn’t. You can read more about thoughtforms at the end of the post.

Why should I be looking out for thoughtforms?

A thoughtform, on its own, is not bad. They are not inherently dangerous, and if you are aware (or find out) that you are working with a thoughtform, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! The biggest problem, however, and the reason for this post, is that many times people will mistake the thoughtforms they work with for spirits/entities. There is a very clear difference, and these common signs will help you determine if the spirit or entity you are working with is actually a thoughtform that has been misidentified, either by you or another worker.

Working with thoughtforms and having thoughtform friends is okay! Just recognize that they are not spirits, and that a thoughtform might lack the free will or self-deterministic abilities that an entity might have. People try to pass them off as spirits or may mistake them as spirits, which is the problem.

Common Signs

Please note: this is not an all-encompassing list and that someone displaying any of these signs might not necessarily be a thoughtform. As always, it is important that you practice strong discernment skills and that you are realistic about who you are working with.

Your spirit lacks emotional depth and maturity alongside critical thinking skills. They are very one-dimensional, and they may have a very shallow personality.

The spirit doesn’t have a life outside of YOU. They never go anywhere else, or do anything else. They live with you, go everywhere with you, and never seem to leave.

Your spirit has no friends, hobbies, etc. They simply have You and You’re Special™.

The spirit is Perfect™ and you are perfectly compatible with each other. Nothing is ever wrong with them.

You know everything about the spirit after having met them very recently. Anything you find out about them is unsurprising. They lack private lives, thoughts, secrets, etc.

They have the best and worst qualities that you find appealing.

They tend to fall on extreme “anime tropes” as personality quirks. They started off as an OC, or they sound like they could be one.

They act the exact same age as you and/or have the same maturity level as you, no matter how old the spirit is.

Your mood and mental health both overly affect them. (It is normal for both of these things to affect your spirit working abilities, but they should not change the type of energy your perceive from an entity, for example).

They behave how you want them to or exactly how you do. They may act on what you think, instead of of their own volition.

Their interests are those you want them to be. They like what you like — not just overlapping interests, they mirror what you like, and it changes based on what you’re interested in.

They are ALWAYS supportive. ALWAYS.

They act like a loving and patient counselor and/or saintly friend all the time. They have no emotional boundaries or needs of their own.

They like all the people you like and hate all the people you hate, no questions asked. This will shift depending on how you feel.

They never get upset or angry at you. They never criticize you. You’ve never had a fight or serious discussion. You never disagree with each other, ever.

Your values are literally the exact same, or the entity’s values are shallow and/or lack thought. They don’t have their own opinions or morals, etc.

They are all ultra, uber powerful and/or the softest bean.

They have no culture, family, history — they lack something from before they met you. Alternatively, they have exactly the family, culture, or history you thought they did, even before they told you about it.

When you question them, you’re unsurprised by their answers.

They act like memelords and understand ALL the pop culture references you make without the need of an explanation.

They manifest very strongly right after you have spent a lot of time thinking of them or with them, and you feel unreasonably drained after these sessions.

Their energy is flat, it is stagnant, it is weak or flimsy, and/or it is difficult to sense and scrutinize in depth.

You have a persistent gut feeling that they are a thoughtform (beyond regular doubts or anxieties that you might experience in your practice). Regardless of validation from other spirit workers, or confirmation through different divination methods, the gut feeling won’t go away.

Distinguishing if a being is a thoughtform or a spirit/entity can be incredibly difficult, because some thoughtforms are very well-crafted. However, the above signs are still be helpful guidelines so that you are able to draw your own conclusions based on your own investigations and discernment.

These definitions are not put forward as the only possible meanings, they are simply based on my own experiences and personal definitions. Like my other two posts, there are no citations because these definitions are based on my own experiences and may or may not describe the experiences of others.

BASIC SPIRIT TYPES & CLASSES

Spirit - An organized cluster of energy with at least some level of sentience that has an energy body and in most cases also an astral body. Spirits generally do not inhabit physical bodies unless they are possessing an entity with a physical body, are attached to a vessel, or are reborn as a spirit incarnate.

Vessel - A physical container that helps a spirit manifest on the physical plane.

Spirit incarnate - Any living being with a physical body (usually a human being) whose energy and astral bodies would be classified as a non-human spirit. This most frequently occurs as the result of a non-human spirit being reincarnated as a human, which is how the spirit became incarnated in a physical body.

Spirit species - A variety of spirits who all share many common traits in their general appearance, energy signatures, and other features. Spirits of the same species will generally be able to produce offspring that carry most of the same traits as their parent(s).

Class of spirit species - A broad grouping of many spirit species that are interrelated in terms of their energies and morphological features. They may also possibly share cultural, linguistic, political, regional, and other commonalities.

Deities - A class of spirits who are powerful beyond the scope of most other spirits and who have control over forces in a specific area or the entire universe on a macro scale. (friendly reminder: these are all my personal definitions, not universal ones)

Nature spirits - A very broad class of spirit species that relate to the forces of nature. I consider plant spirits, tree spirits, fae spirits, land spirits, and many elemental spirits to all be types of nature spirits.

Fae (faeries) - The faefolk are a sub-class of nature spirits. The many different fae species have a wide diversity of outward appearances, but they are all distinguishable by the common aspects of their energy signatures that every fae species shares. Fae energy is a specific combination of nature and pure magic energy. Some live on Earth’s physical plane while others reside in any of the many different fae realms across numerous astral planes.

Land spirits - A sub-class of nature spirits who are very closely associated with a certain territory and primarily live to protect that land.

Night spirits - A class of spirit species that are aligned with the nighttime. They are often classed as “demons,” but many are actually just various species of nature spirits. Usually but not always quite dangerous.

Parasite - A class of spirit species who are energy feeders and prey on certain entities as their hosts. Often warded and protected against.

Human spirits (ghosts) - The deceased spirit of a human being. All human spirits are a part of one single spirit species.

Ancestral spirits - A class of spirits who are the ancestors of an entity either from that entity’s current lifetime or across other lives. Typically, the terms “ancestral spirits” and “ancestors” refer to a person’s human ancestors from their current lifetime.

Twin flames - Two entities with energy signatures that are identical, almost identical, or so interrelated in some fashion that they clearly are two halves of a whole. Twin flames being reborn during the same lifetime seems to be rare.

SPIRIT WORK

Metawork - The practice and discipline of the three highly interrelated fields of energy work, spirit work, and astral work.

Spirit work - The practice and discipline of sensing, interacting with, or commanding spirits. A sub-field of metawork. This is not necessarily a type of witchcraft, but can be referred to as witchcraft when spirit work is incorporated into someone’s witchcraft practice. Closely associated with hedge craft. Many other types of magical traditions that are not forms of witchcraft also include spirit work.

Ancestor work - The practice and discipline of working with ancestral spirits. A sub-field of spirit work.

Conjuring - The act of bringing a spirit to a specific location. Conjuring encompasses a wide variety of different methods which can range from voluntary such as using a beacon of energy to request a spirit’s presence to involuntary which magically force a spirit to manifest at the target location.

Banishing - The act of sending a spirit away from a certain area (the opposite of conjuring). Banishing techniques can be voluntary such as communicating or negotiating with a spirit for them to leave or involuntary when magical methods are used to forcefully remove the spirit against their will.

Binding - The act of using magical means to control a spirit’s behavior in some way. Binding is frequently used to ensure that a spirit remains connected to a vessel, but it can also be used to keep a spirit in a general location or prevent them from transgressing certain predetermined rules. It not uncommon for binding to be completely consensual between spirits and spirit workers.

Possession -  When a spirit inhabits and/or takes control over a physical body that is usually controlled and inhabited by someone else. To some, this term implies that a spirit with harmful intentions has forced control over a human being, but in many religions, spirit possession is welcomed and invited. Whether or not being possessed by a spirit is a negative thing usually depends a lot on the specific context and the spirit involved.

Spirit adoption (reverse adoption) - When a spirit wishes to become a spirit companion or live and work with a spirit worker and voluntarily chooses to do so. Adoptions are often facilitated by a spirit adoption center or shop.

SPIRIT ROLES

Spirit spouse - A term usually used to describe a human spirit worker’s spouse who is a spirit or a deity.

Spirit companion - Any spirit and spirit worker who have established some kind of meaningful relationship and who wish to use this term to describe that relationship.

Spirit guardian - A spirit who has taken on the role of protecting something or someone. I typically use this term as a generic way of describing a spirit who spends a lot of time and energy looking after a person or another spirit. It is not uncommon for people to have spirit guardian(s), and sometimes a spirit companion may also wish to act as as a guardian.

Thoughtform - Any spirit who was created by a spirit worker through magical means (whether purposefully or accidentally). “Tulpamancy” comes from the Tibetan word tulpa that relates to practices within Vajrayana Buddhism, so this is not a secular spirit work term that is appropriate for general use.

AEGIR He is the presiding god of the oceans and seas. He may also be understood as actually being the ocean. Aegir is incredibly ancient, primeval even. His nature as a deity is unclear: he is sometimes called a Jotun (Giant), but he may be so old that he predates Jotuns or any other known classification. Regardless of what he is, he is on generally good terms with other Norse spirits. They socialize in each other’s halls and realms. Aegir is a wonderful, generous host: invitations to his undersea parties are deeply coveted, at least by deities and perhaps by shamans or those engaging in visualization, although dreaded by seafarers.

ANGRBODA She was originally married to Loki. They are the parents of the three creatures Hel, the Midgard Serpent and the Fenrir wolf.

BALDR / BALDUR He is the son of Odin and Frigg and is the fairest of all Aesir spirits, merciful, kind, and wise. Lord of joy, light, purity, friendship, reconciliation, and innocence, he is beloved by all. Well, almost.. After Ragnarok, he will return to the world of men.

BESTLA Mother of Odin and his brothers. Wife of Burr. 

BEYLA  Wife of Byggvir. An agricultural deity who serves the god Frey. It is believed she rules over the manure that softens the earth and develops the seed.

BLODUGHADDA  One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

BRAGI  God of music, poetry and eloquence. He is renowned for his wisdom and always knows the right words and the right way to express them. He may be invoked for advice and assistance. Odin is his father and made him the Skald of Asgard. He is married to the goddess Idunn.

BURI  The first god in Norse Mythology. He is the father of Burr and grandfather of Odin, Vili and Ve.

BURR Father of Odin. Husband of Bestla.

BYGGVIR  Beyla’s husband. An agricultural deity who serves the god Frey. It is believed he rules over the chaff or livestock fodder. 

BYLGJA  One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

DAG / DAGR God of the Daytime. His chariot is drawn by Skin-faxi (shining mane), who’s light illuminates the world. His parents are Dellingr (the dawn) and Nott (the night). 

DELLING / DELLINGR God of the dawn and morning. Father of Dag (the day).

DROFN - One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

DUFA - One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

EIR One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of healing and physicians. She is reputed to be the best of physicians. Her name means “help” or “mercy.” 

ELLI  Goddess of Old Age who is the embodiment of the crone and the wisdom and strength of the elderly. 

EOSTRE / OSTARA Goddess of the spring, rebirth, flowers and rabbits. She represents the return of light and life in the springtime.

FARBAUTI Father of Loki. Husband of Laufey.

FORSETI God of justice and peace. The son of Baldr and Nanna. 

FREY / FREYR  God of sunshine, summer, plant growth, agriculture, animal husbandry, wealth, harvests, peace, plenty, prosperity, sacral kingship and weddings. He is the Elven King, dispensing wealth, love and fertility to adults and good luck to children. He is a divine ancestor, a god of growth. He is venerated as a phallic deity. Although Freyr is a lover, he’s a fierce warrior, too. His nature may be epitomized by the fierce, virile boars that are his sacred animal. He lives in Alfheimr, the world of the elves, and owns the boat Skidbladnir. His chariot is driven by the golden boar Gullinborsti and he is married to the goddess Gerdr. The goddess Freya is his sister and Njord his father. Frey literally means “lord”

FREYA  She is the goddess of love, beauty, sex, lust, magic, battle, life, death and gold. She is said to be very beautiful and lascivious and has a special love of gold and romantic poetry. Her chariot is drawn by cats and lives in Folkvangr, sharing half of the dead with Odin. Some say she is the leader of the Valkyrie but this theory hasn’t been proven. The god Freyr is her brother and Njord her father.  Freya literally means “lady”.

FRIGG / FRIGGA  Goddess of home, family, marriage, childbirth, domestic arts, prophecy and rain. She is a sky and mother goddess who weaves the clouds and controls the rain, giving life to plants, animals and humans. She knows every person’s destiny but will never reveal it. She is a spinning goddess associated with the Norns: she spins the thread they weave and cut. Her husband is Odin the Allfather, leader of the Aesir. In Asgard, she dwells in the fertile wetland halls of Fensalir and flies in a chariot drawn by sheep.

FULLA  One of Frigg’s handmaidens. She carries Frigg’s trunk and looks after her shoes and shares secret counsels with her. She is the personification of abundance.

GEFJON  Goddess who looks after the plowing of the land. One of Frigg’s handmaidens.

GERDA  Wife of Frey. Not much is known about her. She could possible be a personification of the frozen earth.

GNÁ   Minor goddess. One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Frigg sends her into various worlds on errands.

GUNLOD Mother of Bragi.

GULLVEIG  The thrice-reborn. Mysterious goddess who belongs to the Vanir. Associated with alchemy and witchcraft. Possibly an epithet of the goddess Freya.

HEIMDALL The watchman of the gods. God of surveillance. Heimdallr is attested as possessing foreknowledge, keen eyesight and hearing, and keeps watch for the onset of Ragnarök .

HEFRING - One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

HERMOOR -  Messenger of the gods. Son of Odin. 

HEL / HELLA  Goddess of the dead. Ruler of Helheim. She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. 

HIMINGLAEVA - “Transparent-on-top”. One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

HLIN  One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of compassion and consolation. She kisses away the tears of mourners and relieves their grief.

HÖD  Blind god of winter and the darkness that accompanies it. 

HONIR - God of Indecision, Avoidance and Mystery.

HRONN -  One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

HYNDLA Goddess of Genealogy, Bloodlines, and Family Trees. Watcher of the ancestors.

IDUNN Goddess of youth. She grows the magical golden apples of immortality that keep the Gods young. Her husband is the god of poetry, Bragi.

JORD The Earth Mother. Mother of Thor. Some think Jord may be another name for the goddess Frigg -But this hasn’t been completely proven yet-  She is the daughter of Nott (night)

KARI  God of the North Winds. His two brothers were Logi, an ancient fire-god, and Aegir the lord of the seas. 

KOLGA One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

LAUFEY Wife of Farbauti. Mother of Loki. 

LOFN  Goddess of forbidden love. She is also an arranger of marriages and one of the hand maidens of Frigga.

LOGI  Fire Giant, God and Personification of Fire. His two brothers were Kari, Lord of the winds, and Aegir the Lord of the Sea. Not to be confused with Loki!.

LOKI  Trickster god and master trouble maker. God of lies, agility, cunning, deceit, mischief, revenge, thieves, artifice and fire. Loki is more than a trickster and a plotter; he is a skilled inventor, artisan and craftsman. He is font of obscure knowledge. He is nosy and extremely observant. He has a malicious streak and a vicious, cutting humor. Loki is a master shape-shifter. He can appear in any guise. 

MAGNI and MOOI  They are the sons of Thor. Their names mean “Brave” and “Mighty”.

MANI  God of the moon. Máni controls the motion of the moon and its waxing and waning. According to one tradition the Aesir placed him in the sky to count the years. He is the brother of  Sol / Sunna, the sun goddess.

MIMIR  A God who was renowned for his knowledge and wisdom who was beheaded during the Aesir-Vanir War. Afterward, Odin carries around Mímir’s head and it recites secret knowledge and counsel to him.

NANNA  The late Wife of Baldr. After Baldr’s death, Nanna died of grief. When she was alive, Nanna ruled over Joy and Peace.

NERTHUS Earth goddess of fertility, lakes, rivers and sacred waters. Some believe she was the first wife of Njord and the mother of Freyr and Freya. Much like Jord, Nerthus may be another name for Frigg.

NJORD He is the god of harbors, ships and fishermen. He presides over fertile land near water and can calm the sea, winds and fire. Njord presides over a harbor realm known as Noatun, or Ship Town. At one time he was married to the goddess Skadi. He is the father of Frey and Freya.

NORNS - Three goddesses who rule the destiny of gods and men. They are Urd (“The Past”), Verdandi (“What Is Presently Coming into Being”) and Skuld (“What Shall Be”).

NOTT  Goddess of the Night. She drives a dark chariot, drawn by Hrim-faxi (frost mane), whose mane creates the dew and hoarfrost. 

ODIN  (Also known as: Odhinn; Wotan; Woden; Old One Eye)             God of war, wisdom, death, ecstasy, shamanism, esoteric knowledge, poetry, magic and the heroic dead. He is the leader of the Aesir spirits, the Lord of Asgard. He is the master of the “Hall of the Slain”, where he lives exclusively on wine and gives all his food to the wolves Geri and Freki. The dead he has selected through his intermediaries, the Valkyries, are his fellow inhabitants of Valhalla. He owns two ravens, Hugin and Muninn, who fly out each day and return to report all the news of the world to him. He is the husband of Frigg and father of Thor.

ODUR Missing husband of the goddess Freya.

RAN  Goddess of the sea who lives in a golden hall in the deepest depths where those who drown spend eternity. Rán is not a benevolent sea goddess, although she is allegedly a wonderful hostess. She is a death goddess, blamed for shipwrecks, drownings, and disappearances at sea. Rán’s signature possession is a special fishing net, which she uses to catch ships and drag them down to her home.

RIND Goddess of Women’s Protection.

SAGA One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of history and storytelling. She could be considered Asgard’s “librarian”, and she has her own hall named Sokkvabek (Sunk-Bench).

SIF  Goddess of the autumn, harvests, grains and bread. Her long flowing locks of hair are said to resemble fields of wheat. Sif’s hair is an old Norse kenning for gold. She is described as a prophetess and is the wife of Thor and mother of Thrud and Ullr.

SIGYN -Wife of Loki. Goddess of Loyalty and Compassion.

SJOFN One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of Affection. 

SKADI She is the goddess of winter, hunting, mountains, frost and ice. Called the snowshoe goddess, she rescues winter travelers lost in storms or snow. Should you find yourself stuck on a snowy slope or in icebound weather, Skadi would be among the spirits of first appeal. She was once married to the god Njord.

SNOTRA One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of Prudence, Virtue and Self Control. 

SOL / SUNNA  Goddess of the sun. She drives her chariot  pulled by the horses Allsvinn (“Very Fast”) and Arvak (“Early Rising”).She is the sister of Måni, the Moon-god.

SYN  One of Frigg’s handmaidens, she guards the door of Frigg’s great hall keeping out all unwelcome visitors. Syn was also called upon to guide or protect defendants in trials.

THOR (Donar; Thunar) He is the god of thunder, lightning, storms, sacred groves, trees, strength, hallowing and the protection of mankind. He may be the best-loved of all the Norse deities. He is the defender of the Aesir pantheon and the vigilant protector of his devotees. Thor is something of a big lug, but he is consistent, predictable and dependable. He guards against disaster and chaos. 

THRUD  Goddess of Strength. Daughter of Thor and Sif. 

TYR (sounds like “Teer”)  The one-handed god of law, justice, self-sacrifice, trial by combat and war. He is among the most ancient of the Norse deities. He may originally have been the head of the Aesir spirits before Odin assumed that role. Tyr sacrificed his hand to the Fenris Wolf in order to maintain cosmic order.

ULLR (Holler) God of the hunt, archery, skiing, sledding, skating and snowshoeing. Ullr skis through the heavens, leaving stars in his wake. He controls the Aurora Borealis. He is a particularly primordial Norse deity, a mysterious, shadowy spirit. It’s unclear exactly where he sits on the Aesir/Vanir spectrum. Ullr is lord of justice and dueling. Allegedly invoking his name before a duel brings good luck.

UNN  One of the nine daughters of Aegir and Ran who personify the waves of the sea.

VAR  One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of Oaths and Agreements.

VE  Vili and Ve are the two brothers of the god Odin, with whom they shared a decisive role in the creation of the cosmos. 

VIDAR Not much is known about him but many believe he is connected to forests, silence and vengeance. He will kill the wolf Fenrir at Ragnarok. 

VOR One of Frigg’s handmaidens. Goddess of Wisdom. 

VILI  Vili and Ve are the two brothers of the god Odin, with whom they shared a decisive role in the creation of the cosmos.
