Lol, I still remember when Utena first came out and people accused it of being racist and completely missed that it was very intentionally criticising what it was depicting. “It depicts a brown woman being treated badly and that makes me uncomfortable” was such a recurrant sentiment, almost always from white anime fans… but Anthy is absolutely not desi-coded by accident and the story is very much about HER and her growth and her pain and her desires. The story does an excellent job of giving Anthy depth and complexity and making her thoughts and feelings matter more than anything.
