Rewatching episode 23 of season three of The Office, titled "Beach Games," after two years without watching it, and sharing my own thoughts
Well, guys, I donât know if this will turn out well, but itâs an important episode for my favorite character, so I wanted to share it with you!
Every good anime has a beach episode! And even though most of them are filler, this is actually an extremely important episode of The Office. It matters to the overall story, to the love story between Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly, and, just as importantly, to Pamâs own story.
It all starts because a position opens up at the New York corporate office, and Michael is one of the candidates. He doesnât even realize that if a position opened, itâs because someone left. And he just broke up with Jan. Itâs easy to assume she quit her job, right? At least thatâs what I thought the first time I watched it.
Since Michael believes heâs going to leave the Scranton branch, he wants to figure out who would be the best person to replace him. Whatâs the best way to do that? Beach games, pretending theyâre just for fun. Michael is a genius. Itâs also really funny how sure he is that heâll be chosen, when he doesnât even know heâs still just a candidate. To be fair, David didnât make that very clear.
Michael chooses Pam to take notes because he doesnât believe sheâs a good choice to replace him. In other words, he doesnât think sheâd be a good boss. She doesnât even get the chance to compete with the others. Pam is always underestimated by everyone around her, including herself. And this episode makes her rethink all of that. Itâs the final straw.
And poor Toby also gets banned, for obvious reasons. Michael Scottâs completely unfounded hatred. Poor guy, heâs going to miss Pam in a bikini, which she wonât even wear.
Can I say this beach is weird? It looks more like a lake than an actual beach. Michael divides everyone into four teams, but no one knows what the final prize will be, becoming the manager of Scranton. I think if Dwight knew, he would do everything he could to eliminate his rivals for real. Even so, Iâm sure heâs taking it all very seriously. And if he knew he wasnât Michaelâs first choice, I think he would completely lose it.
Jimâs group is having fun, not taking anything seriously, and heâs kind of flirting and messing with his girlfriend Karen. Thatâs Jimâs way of showing love, by being annoying. He does the same thing to Dwight all the time. And poor Pam is just watching the person she loves fool around with someone else, while she takes boring notes she doesnât even know the purpose of. Iâm sorry, but she looks absolutely beautiful with her hair tied back, jeans, and that pink top with the bikini underneath.
Stanley doesnât care at all.
Dwight takes everything very seriously and yells at the intern, sorry, junior salesman. Does he really think heâs going to win Ryanâs friendship like that? No one takes Ryanâs new position seriously.
Andy is doing everything he can not to lose his temper again. After everything that happened, why did Michael choose Andy to be a team leader? Seriously, Andy? And not Pam? Pam, who has always been there for him? Or even Ryan, even though heâs a new salesman. Although, honestly, I think Michael is still mad at him because of what happened.
The whole joke is that the games have absolutely nothing to do with managing a company. Theyâre completely random. Everyone is treating it like a joke, obviously, because no one knows how serious this is in Michaelâs mind.
The next game is eating hot dogs. Michael asks Pam to cook all the sausages, only to later say that he was the one who did it. Thatâs literally dismissing Pamâs work. And she notices it. Sheâs getting fed up with all the disrespect.
Finally, Michael reveals the big prize, manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton. Of course, with that information, people start taking it seriously. Even Stanley.
We find out that Gil and Oscar broke up, and apparently it wasnât amicable. Oscar even says heâs trying to get rid of the relationship. Things clearly werenât good, and weâve already seen that Gil is a jerk in Pamâs art show episode. Was that the reason? Or was he acting that way because things were already bad? Either way, it opened Pamâs eyes, so some bad things do lead to good outcomes.
Dwight and Angela plot against Andy, trying to get him out of the way. And it actually works, because the poor guy ends up floating in the water with his inflatable sumo suit. The only person who sees him fall, and he fell on his own, is Angela. Of course she does nothing and leaves him there in the lake. Seriously, poor guy, although he kind of deserves it after what he did to Dwight. Angela and Dwight are really evil together. The camera knows where Andy is, but thereâs a silent rule that they canât intervene. Everything has to happen naturally. Are they really going to leave him there without saying anything? I find that a bit absurd. Thereâs even a scene where they find him, but no one rescues him. Iâd really like to know how he was eventually found.
With a phone call, we find out that, obviously, Michael is not the only candidate. Quite the opposite. Karen and Jim are also competing. And they are âjustâ salespeople. Probably very good salespeople. Dwight would rip all his hair out if he knew that.
Michaelâs final challenge is literally a trial by fire. Who has the courage to replace him? They have to walk across hot coals. Itâs all about courage. And worse, Pam wants to try. She knows itâs absurd, everyone knows it, but still, she wants to try. After being dismissed all day long, she finally has courage. But Michael quickly stops her, saying that you need courage to be a manager, clearly implying right to her face that she doesnât have it. Right to her face. He doesnât even let her try, because he doesnât believe in her. All of this is making Pam explode inside. I know Michael was very kind in the art show episode, but here heâs being an idiot, constantly showing how much he underestimates his employee.
Obviously, no one wants to do it, because itâs clearly insane and would land anyone in the hospital. Not even Michael wants to go. After all, he already burned his foot in that other episode. But wait. Of course the guy obsessed with getting a higher position would do something like this, right? And he actually does. He falls to the ground, begging for the job while getting burned. Itâs a pretty pathetic scene, in my opinion. Michael hates seeing it. Poor Dwight never wins anything.
Later, in a circle, Michael wants to do the final test and gives Jim and Dwight the chance. Jim admits that he wonât be able to replace him because he has an interview in New York for a corporate position. Michael is clueless and doesnât believe him, thinking Jim is mocking him. Michael is so sure the job is already his, he doesnât even imagine there are other candidates. Now itâs Dwightâs turn to try his luck again.
While Dwight is talking, Pam is isolated, and no one seems to miss her. Sheâs standing in the back, watching the hot coals. Sheâs gathering the courage to walk across them, even though no one is watching. Sheâs doing this for herself. After Michael threw it in her face that she doesnât have courage. After giving a little smile to the camera, she walks across the coals and feels incredibly proud of herself for managing to do it.
With adrenaline at its peak, she goes over to the circle and says she needs to talk because she has been trying to be more honest lately. Points for Oscarâs ex. Pam reveals that she walked across the hot coals and tells Michael to his face that she could be his boss, because not even he was able to do it. He is clearly embarrassed.
Pam is feeling really good, so she starts to vent. She says that many times she feels invisible at the office, as if everyone treats her like she does not exist. She mentions the art show, but I can give more examples. Even when Pam tries to get closer to them, like in that deleted scene I mentioned where she wanted to show that she had won an art contest, no one really cares. Most of the time, Pam is underestimated and dismissed, and this episode was her breaking point, with Michael dismissing her every single moment.
A lot of people say she is only talking about Jim not going to her art show, but that is not true. In the very next moment, she turns and looks at Jim. That means she truly feels invisible to her coworkers, and she is tired of being underestimated like this.
When Pam finally turns to Jim, she confesses what she has been keeping inside for a long time. She says she called off the wedding with Roy because of him. And it is true. She did it because of his confession and his kiss, and the very next day he had already moved to another city. Later, when he finally came back, Pam tried to ask him out for coffee, but he was already with someone else. Pam never really had the chance to be honest about her true feelings. First she was engaged, then he left, then he came back with someone else. She finally exploded after holding all of that in.
When Pam says she should not have been with Roy and that there were many reasons to call off the wedding, but she did not care about them until she met Jim, she is saying that meeting Jim pulled her out of her natural apathy. It is like something woke up inside her, something she had stopped questioning after normalizing her relationship with Roy.
Pam is really saying one thing: She misses Jim. Things are strange between them, and she wishes they could go back to how they were before, because above all, they were best friends before he moved away. She knows he is with someone else, but she makes it clear that this is not what she is talking about. She is talking about missing him.
This is not exactly a romantic confession. Pam never explicitly says that she loves Jim or that she should have been with him instead of Roy. It is a confession of deeper feelings than that. It is about her mistakes and her most vulnerable emotions. It is about being honest for the first time and saying these feelings out loud.
I like that, unlike Jim, who says he would not want to be just friends and wants more than that, Pam gives the impression that she would accept being just Jimâs friend, even if he is with someone else, because she misses how things used to be. I understand that feeling so deeply, and the fear that things will never be the same again. Of course she loves him, everyone knows that. But I love that this moment is so much more than that.
I honestly get upset when people do not understand the meaning of this scene or its impact. This is not about Jim. This is about her finally letting out everything she has felt over the years, with everyone underestimating her and not caring about her. This is not a confession moment. It is a moment where she finally has the courage to be honest. A moment where everything she kept inside explodes for the first time.
And what an honor. The episode was written by Greg Daniels, and it was Pamâs first long monologue. Jenna Fischer had to memorize all of it.
I do not understand people who get angry at this scene. Pam did not plan this. It just happened. She did not do it to humiliate Karen or anything like that. This is about her and her feelings. And honestly, it was much braver than Jim. She said all of this in front of everyone.
It had been two years since I last watched this scene in full. I was really afraid my impression would change after so much hate, but no. My impression actually improved, because I realized it was never as bad as people made it sound.
If she had planned it, or if she had said something like leave Karen and be with me, or if she had insulted Karen in any way, I would understand the criticism. But that is not what happens. It is all about her and how she feels. She does not even say she is in love.
I find it funny when people say Pam should have waited and confessed privately to Jim because Karen would not like it. First, that completely removes the impact and meaning of the scene. Second, would you rather be disrespected behind your back? That makes no sense.
If I were Karen, I would have broken up with Jim a long time ago, even if I liked him. If he likes someone else, what can I do? Change his feelings? I do not control him. And if Jim truly liked Karen, Pamâs monologue would not mean anything to him, and there would be no reason for jealousy or anger.
As Jenna Fischer says about this scene "This scene marked the beginning of a major change for Pam. It was the moment she took control of her own life. And for me, it was a personal milestone as an actress. Pam, and I, gained confidence that night. We both found our voices together."
In the end, this is my favorite Pam scene and a huge milestone for the character. Anyone who does not understand this does not understand Pam and never really tried to.
Jim is in shock and says nothing. But Pam is genuinely happy and proud of herself. She says it was a good day and goes into the water to soothe her burning feet. Even Michael is proud of her and says it was incredible. And it really was.
By some miracle, Andy is on the bus back, and it is daytime. So they camped there. Amazing.
I remember that in the previous episode Michael wished courage for Pam. His wish truly came true.

Pam Beesly in every episode of The Office
What if she had asked her question then, after the Dundie Awards? Maybe they wouldn't have had to wait another two years for this.
Brian and Alex
Alex and Brian, two guys who supposedly had romantic feelings for Pam, but who never had the chance to confess, or even openly flirt, the way Cathy did with Jim. Whatâs funny is that yes, they were going to confess, but the writers decided to remove those scenes.
First, Iâll talk about Alex. When he showed up, everyone got mad at him, poor guy. I honestly thought he was gay. Heâs supposedly younger than Pam, and he keeps making a lot of Freudian-style jokes in deleted scenes, saying that Pam is old enough to be his mother. Is that really flirting?
Anyway, in that episode where Jim and Pam are talking through the new Bluetooth device and Alex calls her to talk, he was supposed to confess his feelings, and Jim would hear everything. I like that Pam doesnât turn the device off. She has nothing to hide.
And honestly, who even thought Pam would leave her brand-new fiancĂ©, Jim, the love of her life, her soulmate, for a guy sheâs known for three months? Please.
In the original version, he only gives her friendly advice, and heâs right, in my opinion. But now Iâm going to show the deleted dialogue.
Pam [00:44:41] Hey, what are you doing here?
Alex [00:44:44] Is there a place we could go talk?
Jim [00:44:46] Who is that, Alex?
Pam [00:44:48] Sure, Alex. Is everything okay?
Alex [00:44:51] I think so. I don't know.
Jim [00:44:53] Ooh, this is juicy. Angle the Bluetooth towards him as he speaks.
Pam [00:44:57] Hey, Barbara, I'll be right back. Can you watch my phone?
Jim [00:45:01] Where are you right now? Don't go anywhere alone with him.
Pam [00:45:04] Is this hallway okay?
Alex [00:45:06] There's no right place to do this.
Jim [00:45:10] [gasping] Alex is into you!
Alex [00:45:14] The last thing I want to do is burden you with this.
Pam [00:45:16] Alex, I -
Jim [00:45:18] Let the man speak.
Alex [00:45:19] Please, let me just get this out. I won't forgive myself if I don't say this. And I know you've got a boyfriend.
Jim [00:45:26] Fiance. I am her fiance, Alex.
Alex [00:45:29] And a life planned with him in Scranton. And Jim's fine, but you deserve a man who challenges you, and I think we both know he's not that guy.
audio clip - Jim [00:45:40] Then who is the guy? Is he the guy?
Alex [00:45:43] And I don't want to ruin our friendship, but I will risk it for the chance of the future we might have. It's you. It's always been you.
Jim [00:45:55] Yeah, well, let's see him propose at a gas station.
Alex [00:45:58] I see things that nobody else sees. The way you are so annoying in the morning.
Jim [00:46:06] Yup.
Alex [00:46:07] The way your bite your lip when you draw,
Jim [00:46:09] What? You draw?
Alex [00:46:12] I love the way you look at my art. I don't even know what I'm saying.
Jim [00:46:17] Please tell me he's raising a boombox over his head. Please!
Alex [00:46:20] Look, just give me a chance. Please. Not for me, but for you.
Jim [00:46:26] YES! A MILLION TIMES YES!
Pam [00:46:29] Alex, I'm sorry. I love Jim.
Alex [00:46:37] Ah. I hope we can still be friends.
Pam [00:46:40] Definitely. And thanks for saying all that. I know that took a lot.
Alex [00:46:48] Yeah.
Pam [00:46:48] You're such an ass.
Alex [00:46:49] I know.
Pam [00:46:50] No, not you.
Alex [00:46:51] Whatever.
I love the difference between Jimâs confession, where she is obviously deeply affected⊠in this one, she just says, âthanks, I love Jim, but congratulations on the courage.â I think thatâs hilarious.
and also how ironic Jim is the whole time, and Pam describes everything that happens
Now Brianâs confession.
Jenna [01:00:44] Well, they start by discussing the promos, so she gets all her promo questions out of the way first, and then he was going to say, how are you doing? And Pam was going to say, oh, fine. Kids are fine. Jim's fine. I'm fine. I think we're fine. She sort of repeats the word fine. And then Brian was going to say, okay, so things are fine, but are they good? And then Pam was going to be like, well, what do you mean? And he says, are you happy? And then it was scripted that he was going to brush some of her hair away from her face and say that maybe it's not his place to say it, but he thinks she deserves better, that she's an amazing woman and she should be with someone who tells her how amazing she is all the time. And then Pam was going to get really angry and say, never call me again.
He was much more disrespectful than Alex, invading her space, touching her, and saying that she deserved something better. I like how she leaves angry, and that scene alone shuts down anyone who thinks Pam could have had any feelings for Brian, who really is a more âdangerousâ rival than Alex.
But Pam loves Jim, and only him, and I think the show makes that very clear to everyone.
Pam and Brian Explained
Before starting season 9 of The Office, I kept reading a lot of bad things about Pam. Things like how she didnât support Jim, or how she blamed Meredith for the lice, which literally didnât happen, since the one who blamed her was the office.
But Iâm not here to talk about that. Iâm here to talk about the many times I read âPam almost cheated on Jim.â I admit I was terrified of getting to season 9 and finding out it really was everything people were saying, but it isnât.
At the end of episode 12, weâre introduced to Brian, the guy who records the sound. Pam is crying because she has just fought with Jim on the phone, and unable to watch that scene, Brian asks everyone to turn off the cameras. We then find out he canât do that because heâs interfering with the natural flow of the documentary, and he gets a warning.
In the following episode, Pam apologizes for this and everything goes back to normal. We also find out that Brian is married. Either way, in that same episode, itâs implied that Brian feels something for Pam, because he smiles while recording her joking around with Clark and Dwight. It suggests that he fell in love with her, even though he has a wife, after observing her for nine years of the documentary, which I honestly think is brilliant.
I love the humanization of the cameras, and I can perfectly understand why Brian fell in love with her, almost as if he were a viewer.
Continuing on, in the next episode Pam is attacked, and Brian is the one who defends her, which ends up getting him fired. Which is bizarre. Was he supposed to just let a woman be physically assaulted? Anyway, Pam feels extremely guilty about this. After all, he lost his nine-year job and could have been hurt. There is nothing here besides guilt. Thatâs why Pam invites Brian and his wife to a Valentineâs Day lunch, a double date, to thank him for saving Pamâs life. At this lunch, Brian reveals that he separated from his wife because they fought a lot, and when they stopped fighting, they realized they no longer cared.
That stuck in Pamâs head.
So much so that at the end of the episode Jim is about to leave because he doesnât want to fight, but she insists that he stays and that they fight. This shows how much Pam fights for their relationship and doesnât want to let anything bad happen.
Going back to the restaurant, Brian says that both of them need to stop crying in front of each other, and here I swear many people get confused, thinking that âbothâ means they were meeting in secret. That makes no sense at all. Everyone saw Pam crying in the office, and Brianâs crying is happening now. He is crying in front of Pam and Jim because he separated from his wife. There is no secret meeting here.
Either way, with this, Jim finds out that she cried because of him, and he gets upset because he didnât know that. I understand Pam. She didnât want to put the blame on Jim by saying âyou made me cry,â but this also shows how they donât talk about their feelings and important things.
Episodes go by, and the documentary trailer is finally released. I didnât know about this, and I thought it was genius! I thought it was just the format of the show, but itâs actually a documentary!
Everyone realizes they filmed more things than they should have, and a whole revolution happens. They have to deal with privacy and how much was filmed.
Thatâs when Pete has the idea of having Pam talk to Brian about it. It was not Pamâs idea. Pete suggested it, and she agreed.
Then comes the controversy. Why didnât she call or send an email? Because it was urgent and needed to be discussed right away so they could resolve the situation. There was a senator involved, a gay storyline, cheating, and more. And why at his house? Simply for privacy. Thatâs why Pam looks back to see if the cameras are following her.
People treat this scene as if Pam were going to Brianâs house to cheat on Jim or to vent about Jim, when she is actually going there to find out about the documentary.
Another controversy is why Pam asks Brian if Jim has changed. The answer is simple. Brian literally saw everything from the beginning, like an external judge who has all the answers. He was the only person who truly knew. Pam is feeling this way after watching the old footage, feeling nostalgic about Jim, and realizing how distant and changed he is.
She doesnât ask if she should stay with Jim, like she almost did with Jim after the Dundies night when she was drunk and still with Roy. She just wants to know if he really changed. Brian is the only person who truly knows the answer, since he recorded the sound of everything.
Pam then changes the subject, because thatâs all she wanted to know, and finally asks about the documentary. Brian reveals that they basically had no privacy for ten years. This makes Pam angry, and she leaves the house.
There was a deleted scene where Brian would finally confess his feelings to her there. He wouldnât be respectful. He would touch her hair and say she deserves someone better than Jim, and that would make her leave the house irritated, just like in the canon scene. But I prefer it this way. I prefer that Brianâs feelings are never revealed.
Iâll make a post about this later, but thatâs it. The idea of cheating never crossed my mind, and I think people donât understand it or exaggerate it.
In the end, Pam never knew about Brianâs feelings, and I prefer it that way.

Pam Beesly typology
Well, Pam is my all-time favorite character! I wrote this text a while ago, I hope it makes sense.
Pam Beesly, ISFJ (Si-Fe-Ti-Ne) 962
SI
damn, this character sure has a lot of si, and is definitely not in third place one of pam's biggest problems is her inertia and fear of doing what she really wants. her arc is literally about stop being so inert in life, her si is extremely unhealthy in the early seasons
she is mad at herself in the series finale, thinking about how she wasted so much time in her life being so unhappy, thinking that if she were braver, she could have done all this a long time ago.
she was afraid to start taking art classes, something she always wanted, because it was something new, and she would have to get out of her comfort zone, leave scranton and etcâŠ
her own long engagement to roy⊠they've been together for so long, 9 years if i'm not mistaken, and that's a long time, roy was what she knew, and change takes a lot of courage
sometimes I read this on reddit, and I'll post it here: ''so long that it's just a part of their lives and they can't imagine life outside the relationship because they've never experienced it so they stick together because it's what they know.'' "Pam's not really a risk taker, and Roy's not really a risk"
pretty much sums up a lot of Pam's decisions early on.
Pam was a bit of a coward, very frightened of change, taking chances and risks. she grows so much and does really well but crumbles at the idea of moving away from Scranton to support Jim's business. she's just a scaredy cat bless her.
exactly, pam hates to take risks, she prefers to stay where she is, because it's comfortable, it's where she knows, where she knows it's going to work out.
but of course, life is not like that, we all need to take risks, and go after what we really want, right?
and that's why she starts to gain more confidence, and although sometimes her insecurity comes back, I believe her development was very well spent and inspiring. after all, she manages to be more assertive over time, but she remains very sweet and kind
she admits it all at the end of the series, that she didn't want to move because she loved what she had, and didn't want to risk it, however, luckily she made it, though it took a while.
i can't see fi, after all, she lied to herself for years that she didn't love jim, that he was just a friend, that she saw him as a brother, she was simply in denial with her own feelings. so much so that in the end of the series she even confesses to brian: ''it was like we were in love, and we didn't know it''
and let's be honest, if jim hadn't come out and kissed her, do you really think pam would break up with roy? no, they would get married, and pam would probably be very unhappy.
she would look back, and think that she didn't have the courage to do anything. so thanks to jim's action she finally had the courage to break up with roy, because if it wasn't for him, she would never break up with him.
FE
ok, your fe is extremely high, and much higher than her fi...
hm⊠I could go on listing a thousand and one things that pam has done for anyone in the office, but I can summarize that, damn, she definitely cares about everyone there.
the story of michael and the little bird, her feeling guilty for not helping karen, her letting dwight win the battle with the computer, her doing the chore wells, her letting oscar that dwight is ok but the intention was to discreetly let her know angela, her realizing before anyone else that dwight is down and needs to talk, her helping darryl with his daughter, her literally breaking a computer so she can give andy a new one, her buying erin a computer just because she knows that one it's bad, she understanding dwight and managing to stop him from breaking up the office
ok, right... honestly, you can understand that she really cares about the collective and values it, she literally knows how to understand people and help them above anything else
there's a scene that creed even calls her mom lol, when they're going to show michael's movie, and she tells everyone to take it easy because he's very sensitive, creed says; ''thanks, mom''
anyway, in short, she is clearly a mother there, who takes care of everyone, but unfortunately few people value it.
INF NE
another thing that is very clear about pam is her inf ne
it appears in times of anxiety, sadness or fear ''Do you suddenly want to try out some fancy new idea?''
beach day, she was definitely tired of keeping all that stuff inside her also when she follows michael in the new company or when she becomes office administrator
âDo past mistakes or negative past events haunt you or make you believe that itâs not worth working towards a future goal?â ''I don't want to fail... again''
Do you feel paralyzed when you think about the future, imagining all the things that could go wrong if you make the wrong decision? ''i was scared, you know? i loved what i had, and i didn't wanna risk it.'' (about leaving scranton)
Do you experience sudden bouts of irrational hope only to then cruelly destroy them in your mind for believing they are impossible to do in the real world, suffering emotional and mood swings in the process? her speech in michael's car is pure inf ne:
âI canât do this. I had a real job, I sat 10 feet away from my fiancĂ©e, I had health benefits. I was just feeling impulsive. I should've gotten a tiny tattoo on my ankle. I just keep getting bored and I let things build up and build up and then I do something too bigâ
oh yes, even her pranks on dwight are to impress jim. when jim is no longer at the office, the only prank she does on dwight is making him run without counting time, and she doesn't even seem to be having fun doing it. she did it only because dwight was rude to toby.
''even so often, jim dies of boredom...[...] oh, and our deal is that it's up to me to revive him'' so she proposes to throw things in dwight's mug
season 3, christmas episode, she also proposes a prank, just to try to get his attention
at the beginning of season 7, she only pranks dwight with the elevator because she felt guilty for screwing up jim's pranks
anyway, she sure is a people pleaser
some random trivia it takes her a day to decide whether or not to eat todd's cupcake, and she even talks to her husband and sister about it looool
pam looks annoyed when michael doesn't follow the list '''michael, this is not on the list''' ''yes, it is.''' ''no... it's not... when did you add this to the list?'''

it's obvious, pam always wanted peace in her life, she is inert and takes a long time to take some action, she is a peacemaker and rarely enters into conflicts, many times even accepting bad situations, like her long and unhappy engagement, or when jim went to philadelphia and let her take care of the kids until she had a meltdown, or even when jim bought a house without talking to her first.
it is very good to see her maturity during the series, to see her say what she really wants. a silly example is in the chair x copier, where she decided that she wanted a chair and fought until the end about it.
pam from s1 would never have given her opinion like that and would just go with the flow of the majority, or her fiancé.

her 6 is pretty high too
pam is clearly very fearful, it's not a fear that causes panic most of the time, but it's a fear that paralyzes, along with her 9.
her arc is basically about trying to overcome this inertia and this fear, and the episode at the art gallery, when Oscar's boyfriend says that Pam doesn't have much courage, is the beginning of that.
afraid to leave her long-term relationship, afraid to accept her feelings for her best friend, afraid to start following her dreams as an artist, afraid to leave scranton, afraid to be a mother, afraid to fail, etc etc...

pam wants to be loved, she is extremely kind and, along with her fe, she can understand and ''seduce'' people.
she knows exactly how to treat each one, that's how she got signatures to be the office administrator.
she hates to think of anyone hating her, so she is usually very patient, kind and a good listener, even with those who don't deserve it, like angela.
and even though karen was a "rival", pam never saw her like that. in fact, she felt intimidated by karen (6 and 2), and that's why she helps her and gets closer to her, being afraid of being hated by her
Pam Didnât Fail at Art
I hate it when people say Pam failed at everything, because thatâs far from the truth.
Pam starts the show as an unhappy receptionist, mainly because her boss keeps annoying her all the time, her fiancĂ© is a troglodyte, and sheâs not in the profession of her dreams. So yes, from the very first episode we know sheâs always wanted to be an artist, but her jerk of a fiancĂ© doesnât understand that and doesnât support her, thinking itâs just a waste of time. Pam, already resigned to her miserable life, ends up doing nothing to change it.
Only after she ends the engagement does she start chasing her dreams, taking art classes. And then, when sheâs already dating Jim, she gets accepted into a design program. I always found it kind of strange that she chose design, because you donât really need to know how to draw for that course, even though it helps. But I imagined that she wanted to try something to maybe start a career. But the point here is that Pam was never good with technology, computers, or Photoshop. And that program was all about making logos for companies. Pam didnât like that, it simply wasnât her thing, since she likes to draw by hand and paint with watercolor.
Thereâs even a very important deleted scene that shows this. Pam showing her work to Jim, totally discouraged, and then he finds a page where she had scribbled while riding the subway, and the drawings are beautiful!
Pam didnât fail at art, she failed at technology.
After that, she tried other things because she was looking for a place where she could finally fit in without giving up what she loves, even if that meant failing a few times along the way.
And whatâs even more beautiful is that she never gave up on her artistic dream. In the end, she becomes a muralist. Not only for the office, but she also painted the Irish mural, which matches her style much better!
Iâve seen people complaining about the mural she did for the office, saying she didnât include the warehouse staff, but that painting is about the show. The mural is an emotional memory of the main characters, not a company flowchart. Those are the main characters, itâs about The Office, about the important characters who stood out, and they were painted by Pam.
Itâs such a beautiful way to end the show.
Pamâs goal was never to become a famous artist, but to be seen, to be able to do what she loves, and thatâs exactly what she achieved in the end.
