the problem with harry potter fics is that you cannot change the baseline of your characters personality in such a fundamental way due to the sorting hat system. you need to have a clear idea of how your character behaves (at least at the start of the story) because how they act majorly changes their environment and who they come into contact with

for example, a lot of draco x reader fics will have the reader in slytherin because it's the most convenient from a plot point of view for proximity between you and the love interest. however, a lot of reader-inserts don't display slytherin behaviours which just highlights the way the character is an add-on rather than a part of the in-fic universe

now, this isn't to say that you cannot have unique takes on how the houses apply, in fact i encourage it. in one of the most compelling slytherin!harry fics i read, harry didn't think he was a slytherin and was actively denying it and i remember one of the characters reframing his chivalrous and/or more reckless tendencies by saying "So, you want to go through a war without anyone dying? That sounds pretty ambitious to me."
