Kadar had just gotten his second Starbucks of the day, his own little pick-me-up after a long morning shift at the hospital. The laves hadn’t even started to turn colors yet, but fall was in the air and it was made all the more obvious by the plethora of pumpkin-flavored treats now being offered in almost every storefront. Ironically, he preferred a triple-espresso peppermint venti, which was still technically out of season.

He ventured outside, skirting around the group of giggling college-age girls and heading for the crosswalk. As was typical in the city, Kadar had been forced to park a few blocks away from his actual destination, but at least the weather wasn’t too cold just yet.

Kadar was completely wrapped up in his thoughts by the time he reached the corner of the sidewalk. So much so, he nearly ran into the man who had just finished crossing from the other side of the street.

"Oh, yallah, I’m so sor-! Fei?" The apology had come out in a rush, but Kadar stopped short when he saw the man’s face. Sure, he was older now, but there was no mistaking it. His old friend from college- the one he had had a crush on, even- Was standing right before him.

Ignoring the man's apology, Fei continued to press forward. He resolved to mutter under his breath about the uselessness of some people and continued to cross the street. It wasn't until the mention of his name that Fei was curious enough to let his eyes drift up from his phone and to the passerby.

The voice was mostly unfamiliar... but then again, he'd met thousands and thousands of people in his lifetime. He turned his head to the side and squinted, lips pulling tight as he struggled to identify the suddenly familiar man staring at him.

"Kadar?" Fei blinked slowly, then shook his head. Great. Today was not the day for meet and greets. There was so much to do. "Well let's not stand in the middle of the street staring. Headed East too?"

Summer was but a fleeting reminder on the streets: the wretched heat and days marked by sweaty backs of the bustling people were coming to a slow, smooth end. The bum piss didn't assault the nose as it usually did (how rancid were the homeless in the summer!) and the reckless heat began to deflate from its normal swell.

Good god, was it September already?

A flock of white girls stood outside the Starbucks, giggling as they clutched their PSLs in newly manicured hands. A lone business man stood across the street, glaring at them with disdain. Their laughs were shrieks that could wake the dead and he was bitter with their moment of bliss. With an agitated sigh he looked down at his phone.

Inbox: 1019. Same as ten minutes ago.

Fei shook his head disapprovingly. He had been waiting on an email all afternoon. The western account only had 23 more days to pull itself up before the end of the quarter--and if it didn't, he'd be shit out of luck. The company had given him this responsibility with steep terms. He hadn't been the most reliable employee in the past year. A little mental scuffle had made sure of that... but that was all behind him now. Beefeiy vonTuzkar was not a man to back down from a challenge. No, he'd win this little war of accounting and sales. He had to.

A quick glance around the street and, assuming it was safe, Fei stepped out into the intersection: head still tipped towards his phone, oblivious to anything else around him.

Fei huffed at her mimicry, mostly amused but slightly irked. He opened his mouth to whine something along the lines of I don't sound like that! but promptly shaped his jaw closed before the words could come out.

"Well," he began. "I~ I know you don't like work but you HAVE to go, don't you emperor?" Fei batted his eyelashes, voice squeaking as he attempted to mirror Animus's higher voice. "Plus when you come home you get to touch my butt!"

Animus whimpered, sitting in the seat of her desk and wriggling. No matter what she did, nothing relieved her of this terrible…. heat, this need to seek out someone to…. to release her. She brought out her mobile unit, and chewed her lip, typing a message to send to some who she knew might consider helping her.

Fei tapped the tip of his pen against the smooth glass table, looking up slowly from his phone. One of their clients stood at the end of the room droning on about the legalities of printing vital business growth in one of their annual reports.

Suddenly, and without remorse, Fei rose from the table and gave a nod to one of the partners. "Family emergency," he hissed. "Take it from here."

Once out in the lobby, Fei tapped away feverishly. Was she okay? Animus was never extremely proud but she was highly competent in her own right. A message like this was highly uncharacteristic and his mind could only assume the worst.
