on my hands and knees. scrubbing sticky spilled beverage off of the floor. it was heavily flavored with (artificial) vanilla, had a strong scent. so sticky, so much sugar. a customer had dropped a beverage can. management had saidĀ ādonāt worry, we can write it off, itās not that expensive. go wipe it up.ā outside, it was snowing, heavily. there with me on the floor, puddles of melted snow, grimey, brought indoors by customersā boots. apron stained. while there, on the floor, repetitive scrubbing, i considered that an English sugar-plantation-owner in Barbados in the 1790s was likely to have been 5-times richer than their wealthiest land-owning (white) childhood friends still living back in Britain proper. i wondered how vanilla has come to be so inexpensive. (is it actuallyĀ āinexpensiveā? or do landscapes and people still die to grow and harvest it?) where did this vanilla come from? where was the coffee grown? all of this sugar just tossed aside. like nothing. 125, 200, 350 years ago, vast amounts of people were enslaved and died for this sugar. entire communities, whole cultures invaded, destroyed, to bring Empires sugar, the Georgian-era equivalent of this spilled āBANG Birthday Cake Bash (TRADEMARKED) Keto-Coffee Protrein-Enhanced Energy Drinkā which iām scrubbing off of the floor, on my knees, almost in an act of worship. āwe can write it off.ā in 1540, how many people were murdered in Central America by Spanish colonizers to acquire this amount of vanilla for shipment back to a court in Iberia? in 1610, how much reward would an Italian merchant vessel have earned for delivering this coffee from North Africa to Venice? in 1805, how much cash would a London tea-shop-owner have paid for this sugar? all so easily acquired, now? in 2020, how many people still work and die so that these ingredients can be shipped to the Europe and the US, offered at such āinexpensiveā price? now all of these substances are just ⦠a sticky puddle on the floor? a stain on the apron? after scrubbing the floor, i entered the walk-in cooler, the white noise of the fans a reprieve, to read the list of ingredients on the labels of the coffee/energy drinks. āguava.ā āacai berry.ā āNesquik Double Chocolate ready-to-drink milk.ā how did it get here? a loud ringing. motion detectors. customers are entering the store. too much stimulation. supposed to be āworking.ā donāt know how long i have stood in the cooler. deep breath. attempt to revert to normal workplace behavior and thoughts. had to go back to āhelping customers.ā cannot openly discuss botany and colonization and land-theft of Regency-era British Empire. i leave the cooler. same day, a co-worker: āhey, check out the new hand lotion, really helps with the bleach burns, smells awesome!ā me: āoh?ā she says: ācoconut and vanilla!ā again my thoughts are dragged away:Ā āwhat harms have come to the islands of the South Pacific? how did this substance extracted from tropical plants find its way here, to this snowy landscape? why is the coconut-oil lotion so cheap? who paid the real cost to bring it here? this process was not passive. which institutions stole local plant knowledge and patented this variety of the plant? who was forced under duress to harvest the coconut?ā violence.
Do high school kids these days just have trans classmates now. Like I keep seeing zoomer posts casually referring to it. Fucking wild if true.
Here's what prompted this post btw
yeah my younger sibling's friend group made bets about if any more of them would end up as trans lol
[ID: tags reading āI mean yeahā and āwere we. not supposed to have trans classmates (keysmash)ā end ID]
Iām going to take these tags a little more seriously than they were probably intended.
We are elated yāall have trans classmates. We didnāt. We didnāt because it wasnāt an option to be trans, you probably didnāt even know the word. And if you did, your parents would have abused it out of you. And if they didnāt, the school staff would have. And if they didnāt, the other kids definitively would have.
Iām not even that old and let me tell you, my first year of high school, gay rights got discussed and that was it. Most were favorable about it and thought gays should just be allowed to do their own thing! So it wasnāt horrible on that front! But I had teachers tell me in the same breath bisexuality didnāt exist. And transness? Wasnāt even discussed. Even in my friend group of multiple bisexuals, I could count the number of times I even heard the word before I graduated high school, and it was said with apprehension. Like we were gonna get in trouble for knowing the word. Because in some families, you would have been in trouble for knowing the word ātransgenderā.
Trans acceptance has a long way to go, but please please please be aware that 10 years ago it was unthinkable, not because everyone hated trans people, but because a lot of people didnāt know they existed to think it.
This. I went to school before section 28 was repealed. I didnāt know trans people existed and, assuming my teachers even did, it would have been illegal for them to inform me. Queer people were officially not supposed to exist. Was I the only trans kid in my school? Probably not. Were there kids who, unlike me, knew they were trans? Maybe! I know people my age who transitioned younger. It was possible, just less common than now. I donāt know what my single-sex boarding school would have done if someone had come out as trans, but I do know when a boy at my then-boyfriendās single-sex boarding school was outed as gay his parents were called to pick him up for his own safety. And yeah, boarding schools were probably worse than normal schools but section 28 applied everywhere.Ā
So it is strange to think of openly-trans kids just living their lives and being a normal part of school life. (Kind of like how my grandad probably found it strange that there werenāt a load of kids with post-polio syndrome at my dadās school.) It is, in fact, fucking amazing. Because we didnāt have that. Itās wonderful that itās normal to gen Z, but maybe some people in the notes could stop expecting the rest of us to not marvel at how far the world has come in the span of less than a generation. Progress is good and should be celebrated.
One of the most validating experiences I've had since coming out was about a year ago when I went into a women's bathroom where my wife's two high school aged cousins were sitting on the counter doing makeup, and they barely even looked up, just said "hey Leah" and continued their conversation like nothing had happened.
Because to them it hadn't! Even though at time of posting they still knew me as a guy for about twice as long as they've known me as a girl, as soon as I came out to the family they got it, because yeah yeah, the trans girl, we've all seen it. They've done this before, they've got trans friends, it's whatever. WHICH IS WILD AND AMAZING TO ME!
It's unbuckle her belt sunday
Iām making a base for my first fursuit head! Iām using sulfur free plasticine clay so that I can make a silicone mold and cast it out of expanding foam. This suit is going to be a ram with a skull face so Iāll be coating the foam with plastidip to make a smoother surface. Iām currently working on the lower jaw and a tongue that I plan on casting out of silicone. I am planning for a partial suit but if I have time before Portcon Iām going to make a fullsuit.Ā
