what she means: on the surface kiryu is a classic example of the video game player protagonist: quite serious and not too smart, a tough guy inclined to solve problems with his fists, but with a heart of gold. But paying close attention to his characterization over time and in substories reveals that he is not only a delightfully complex and realistic character in his own right, but also a brilliant deconstruction of the trope. His taciturnity is balanced by a vibrant interest in the world and people around him, and an eager willingness to engage. He gets quietly but easily excited by trivial prizes and accomplishments. He likes games. He has a slightly unintelligible moral outlook that he sticks to with boundless tenacity. his shortsighted battle-readiness causes him to run into grave errors that repeatedly nearly get him killed. His zest for fighting collapses into suicidal ideation, his participation in shallow machismo contests concealing a longstanding desire for death, for suffering to end. His impulsive, at times genuinely stupid behavior is a result of this suffering becoming habit and coalescing into self-destructive behavior that simultaneously apes and genuinely serves a real purpose.

His own suffering makes him gentle and generous to others, and makes him a fierce defender of the value of life. He continually offers the hand of friendship to fallen and humiliated enemies, even when this desire to forgive poses in turn a risk of death.
