Someone said it in the replies but by "traditional Japanese style toilets" I mean the ones that are holes in the ground where you have to squat to do your business. I encountered one in a train station in Kyoto, got scared of it and walked out and waited until I could find a modern toilet.

I didn't encounter these in japan but found a lot in taiwan and china!! i was definitely weirded out as first but by the end i DID really like how it gives more space in the stall! you don't have to constantly worry about bumping against the toilet when opening the door etc.
