also, i havent posted on tumblr in forever and dont know how censorship is these days so i apologize if this gets taken down for cock 😭 I’M SO SO SO PROUD OF THIS SO I HOPE IT DOESNT GET TAKEN DOWN…….

3rd Life: desert tawny owl (Strix hadorami). this one is mostly just for the warm aesthetic and desert symbolism. when i first got into hermitcraft i enjoyed drawing grian as a tawny owl anyway because their feathers match his hair, but then i realised that it fits for him in 3rd Life so i went with it.

Last Life: great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor). this one’s a doozy. shrikes are incredible little birds. these vicious, carnivorous passerines are commonly called the “butcherbird” for the way they skewer their prey on sharp branches, thorns, barbed wire, etc. they’re very intelligent, knowing to leave certain bugs with toxins out a little longer for exposure to degrade the toxins off of their bodies. they’re also territorial, but stick close to a group of other shrikes mostly. i feel like this bird fits grian’s vibes in Last Life pretty well, due to his incessant cruelty towards scar, his nefariousness in general, flocking with the Southlands and the other reds, and generally acting like he was always one step ahead of everybody at all times. and shrikes also have a bit of a bandit aesthetic going which i think also fits.

Double Life: rosy-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis). this one hurts. lovebirds are known for their deep loyalty and monogamous relationships, so..... yeah. ouch. here’s a line from the lovebird wiki because it is insanely adorable and you need it in your life: “Social and affectionate, the name comes from the parrots' strong, monogamous pair bonding and the long periods which paired birds spend sitting together.” i feel like lovebird fits for grian in DL because of the consistent parrot thing, plus it’s uh. pretty ironic, due to the nature of his storyline in DL. good angst opportunities here.

Limited Life: western jackdaw (Coloeus monedula): i knew i wanted grian to be a corvid for Limited Life because of the nefariousness and close-knittedness of the Bad Boys. i was originally thinking a magpie perhaps, but then i read up on jackdaw mythology and boy does it fit grian. they’re cunning and conniving creatures of mischievous narcissism, known for their intelligence and close social behaviour. they’re nosy and like to mess with things, bother people, etc. if only jimmy and joel could be jackdaws as well, then it’d be a perfect trio!
