your top surgery results are UNBELIEVABLE. you look amazing man!! how has the recovery process been for you? any advice after going through it yourself?
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU SO MACH …….. this might be a long (and semi TMI response) so fair warning LOL).
-> IF YOU HAVE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS PLS COMMENT / SEND AN ASK I KINDOF WORD DUMPED ?!!?!!?
Honestly the first week was the worst (and longest feeling) part of the recovery process for me. After surgery, I woke up with about 1” thick padding around the front of my chest with my compression binder on. Even with nerve blockers, I was experiencing a lot of pain (both surgery and non-surgery related; will elaborate). I was not prescribed any prescription medications and was informed to take 1000mg of acetaminophen every 8 hours (along with 500mg of ibuprofen if needed, but only after the 24 hour mark). Noting here I was also under anesthesia so the first 2 days I spent mostly in and out of sleep. Aside from non surgical pain, the back pain was EXCRUCIATING and sometimes worse than the surgical pain T__T. I used an ice pack for my incisions & a heat pack for my back. I also slept / lounged on a wedge pillow with an additional pillow to elevate my legs. Sorry this is so out of order LOL I’m writing as I think…but sleeping was also difficult. I did not have a full nights sleep until around 4 weeks, and falling asleep is still semi difficult. I’ve only recently started to lay on my sides again (somewhat) comfortably. About 5 days post op, I got the padding taken off & my dressings (steri strips and nipple padding) changed. I was then told to change my steri strips as needed & my nipple pads daily. Nipple care is… really easy. At least for me. You put a small amount of Vaseline on a (thin) non-adhesive guaze pad and just. Slap it on. I was told to wear my compression vest until the 4 week mark. I was also able to remove my steri strips at this point. For nipple grafts, you do have to continue covering them until they’re fully attached.
Adding it here because I completely forgot somehow. The first shower felt so crazy. It was the second time I had gotten my compression vest off and it was almost… uncomfortable. [Gross warning] it felt like my skin was gonna fall off my chest. [Gross over] I was very quickly in and out of the shower just so I could put the vest back on. I also had to use warm water (as opposed to hot) and face away from the shower head. I wasn’t able to face the shower head until my nipples were fully attached (which happened around week 5). It does get easier to shower overtime but don’t be scared if the first one feels more weird than euphoric.
Edit: forgot to mention the worst part of recovery (for me)….constipation……..I was informed to take 2 stool softeners the day prior to surgery and continue taking them post op until I have a movement. I think I lasted 4 days before I had to take a laxative. It was easily the worst pain I experienced out of anything, as it felt like my intestines were turning and folding in on themselves. My advice is to drink prune juice Before it gets to that point (but if you need a fast acting laxative, colace is the goat)
SCAR CARE:
Full transparency- I just recently started doing more scar care as my incisions were being crazy. You shouldn’t start scar care (other than massaging) until your scabs are gone & there are no holes (Yes. Holes). So for the past 2 weeks I’ve been covering my incisions with Vaseline & non-adhesive gauze to wet heal any remaining scabs or splitting sutures -> luckily I only had one splitting suture (internal stitch that wants to escape) and it came out today!!! So now I have to wait for the hole to close up. I might post a scar timeline just for better reference. My current routine is massaging in silicone scar gel in the morning (on any healed areas) and changing/wearing the Vaseline (in needed areas) all day. I plan on trying the tape tonight and seeing how it feels. Both gel AND tape isn’t needed, but I want to prevent my scars from stretching too much. For massaging, I like to gently massage in circles & an up/down motion over my incisions & under my incisions (as there’s hard tissue there). Honestly I forget to do it, but i would recommend massaging 2-3 times daily for a few minutes each time. It helps to improve blood flow (improves healing) and break up any hard tissue (improves flexibility). I believe I was cleared to start massaging around 2 weeks?
What I used / Other Advice:
- STOCK UP !!!
I made sure to buy plenty of drink supplements, electrolyte packets, and canned soup prior to Going Under. I did not have much of an appetite for the first few days (especially when the constipation got worse) so drinking ensures (drink supplement) was a life saver. I recommend the ones with extra protein (chocolate specifically). My surgeon advised me to drink at Least 2 electrolyte packets daily- and even advised them over drinking water!! Soup is also great for when you don’t have an appetite (or even better when you Do and you just need smth rly simple)
-> noting here that straws or bottles with straws are also really helpful. It was a bit hard for me to drink otherwise
- Portable bidet
You could also install one to your toilet but that’s not an option for me so. Portable bidet. It’ll be difficult to bend your arms (especially back) for the first few days/week, so a bidet is just not Necessary but does make things a lot easier
- Mastectomy pillow
Also not a necessity, but it is nice to have. I mostly used mine for holding ice packs in place and for extra padding while my chest was still sore & sensitive - Plenty of button upsI asked any male family member (that I’m out to) for button up shirts they no longer wanted LOL. Once you gain more arm mobility, you can manage to put on t shirts and stuff. But for the first few weeks, I lived in exclusively button ups (also, don’t be afraid to ask for help putting these on for a bit. It took me around 2~ weeks to put one on by myself. Very slowly)
- MESSAGE YOUR SURGEON / SURGERY TEAM
If I had the smallest concern, I was messaging my surgery group LOL. I’m still talking with them now to ensure my scars are healing smoothly even
- DONT BE AFRAID TO MOVE !!!
It’s incredibly important to NOT stay in bed- especially during the first week. Deep vein thrombosis is rare but also Very Scary. I tried to get up and…slowly shuffle…every few hours. At minimum, try and move every 8~ hours. My surgeon also told me to not be a T. rex… At least not forever. The first week is obviously. Pretty limited. But after removing the thick padding, it gets much easier to VERY SLOWLY and VERY GENTLY move your arms. I tried to not raise my elbow above my shoulders (still trying to minimize this) but made sure my arms weren’t stationary either.
VERY BRIEF NOTE I also had lifting restrictions that made things not. Unbearable but definitely more dependent than I’m used to. For the first week I couldn’t lift more than 5 lbs and it gradually went up every week (10lbs at 2 weeks, 15lbs at 3 weeks, and so on)
