Another corporate manufactured headline
Walmart threatens to close stores and raise prices because of increased retail theft. Let’s remember:
They just spent $20B (BILLION) on stock buybacks
Walmart’s owners - The Walton Family - make over $4M per hour
The company made $146B last year
Just need to put this out there:
Authors deserve as much respect as artists.
We work hard on our craft. It also takes hours upon hours. It also involves skills and talents that take years to hone.
Please stop thinking of writing as a second class hobby.
Light is the language of photography, the soul of the world. There is no light without shadow, just as there is no happiness without pain.
- Isabel Allende, Portrait in Sepia
I have been trying to write for a while now. I have all these amazing ideas, but its really hard getting my thoughts onto paper. Thus, my ideas never really come to fruition. Do you have any advice?
Write the ideas down. If they are going to be stories, try and tell the stories you would like to read. Finish the things you start to write. Do it a lot and you will be a writer. The only way to do it is to do it.
I’m just kidding. There are much easier ways of doing it. For example: On the top of a distant mountain there grows a tree with silver leaves. Once every year, at dawn on April 30th, this tree blossoms, with five flowers, and over the next hour each blossom becomes a berry, first a green berry, then black, then golden.
At the moment the five berries become golden, five white crows, who have been waiting on the mountain, and which you will have mistaken for snow, will swoop down on the tree, greedily stripping it of all its berries, and will fly off, laughing.
You must catch, with your bare hands, the smallest of the crows, and you must force it to give up the berry (the crows do not swallow the berries. They carry them far across the ocean, to an enchanter’s garden, to drop, one by one, into the mouth of his daughter, who will wake from her enchanted sleep only when a thousand such berries have been fed to her). When you have obtained the golden berry, you must place it under your tongue, and return directly to your home.
For the next week, you must speak to no-one, not even your loved ones or a highway patrol officer stopping you for speeding. Say nothing. Do not sleep. Let the berry sit beneath your tongue.
At midnight on the seventh day you must go to the highest place in your town (it is common to climb on roofs for this step) and, with the berry safely beneath your tongue, recite the whole of Fox in Socks. Do not let the berry slip from your tongue. Do not miss out any of the poem, or skip any of the bits of the Muddle Puddle Tweetle Poodle Beetle Noodle Bottle Paddle Battle.
Then, and only then, can you swallow the berry. You must return home as quickly as you can, for you have only half an hour at most before you fall into a deep sleep.
When you wake in the morning, you will be able to get your thoughts and ideas down onto the paper, and you will be a writer.
“Whenever I think about the experience [of Hamilton], I think about Lin. Obviously. But not just because he wrote it and stars in it. He’s such a heartfelt person and so, thank God he’s at the center of this monster, because I feel like everything that he does comes from such a generous, loving place. And so, no matter where this show goes, no matter where the show takes people, and the context of the show, and the people that come see the show – the fact that at its core it’s got that sort of beating heart is such a gift. He’s a genius and so you can be like, “the fact that that person’s a dick or whatever, is okay because they’re a genius.” I feel like there’s such a pass for people who are “geniuses” that are inappropriate, but it happens. The fact that he is a genius and he handles himself in such a classy [way.] We share a dressing room space everyday and he’s always excited to be there, he’s always positive, he’s tweeting every 5 seconds, and he’s a crazy joy machine. He’s the best. And so, when I think about the experience or what it’s like, I always think about him and it makes me feel happy.”

We interrupt this lovely readalong for more HarperCollins union news.
Namely, the union is on strike. HarperCollins, the second largest publishing house in the United States, has made record profits (in the billions) but refuses to pay its employees a living wage or negotiate in good faith. Unlike the one-day strike earlier this year, this will be an open-ended strike, to last until a fair, good-faith contract is agreed upon.
I cannot overstate the implications here. HarperCollins is a 200-year-old behemoth with over 120 imprints, owned by billionaire Rupert Murdoch. You have reads books from this company, I guarantee it. You have enjoyed movies and TV shows spawned by this company. The workers striking at the blood and sweat responsible for launching those properties you love. And as Harper goes, so goes the rest of the industry. If we raise the living standards for one, so the pressure increases on other companies to raise it for all.
The Harper Union need your support. They have a full thread here, but here’s the gist of what they’re asking:
EVERYONE:
- Donate to the strike fund if you can
- Politely email Harper’s HR ([email protected]) and the CEO ([email protected]) to express your support for the strike and the union.
- Boost their message on social media and among your social circles (here are some assets you can use to do that)
- If you are in the NY metro area, come join the picket line at 195 Broadway in Manhattan!
BLOGGERS/REVIEWERS/BOOKSTAGRAMMERS/BOOKTOKERS:
- If possible, please hold all reviews of Harper titles until the strike is over. (And I would add, if you feel comfortable doing so, tell Harper why.)
FREELANCERS/INDUSTRY HOPEFULS:
- Don’t be a scab. Don’t take new freelance projects or temporary positions while the strike is ongoing.
BOOKSTORES/BOOKSELLERS:
- Share the “I Stand With” graphic
- Print and distribute the union bookmark at your store
AUTHORS/AGENTS:
- Do not submit or sign new contracts to Harper until the union’s own contract is finalized.
———
Please note they are not asking for a boycott on Harper titles. A boycott would harm the authors, who have nothing to do with this, so the union is explicitly requesting no boycott.
Also, please do not @ Harper social accounts to yell at them. Direct all feedback to that peopleteam email. The majority of folks watching those accounts are out on the picket line anyways, and their managers have already been warned that, as non-union members, they risk termination if voice any public support for the strike.
For more info, check out the union’s accounts on Twitter and Instagram. I also recommend this Twitter thread for some hard facts and figures.

Hi! I'm a 30 year old queer transgirl. I'm coming back to Tumblr because *waves at Twitter* and this is the safest social media I have from my family. I'm out to my friends and deeply in the closet at home for my safety. My pfp is my FFXIV character because playing her gives me gender euphoria and I'm increasingly struggling seeing my presentation.
I'm glad to be back here! Hoping to make friends 💕
it's okay if you struggle to settle on choosing a name as a trans person. it's okay if you change your name every other week for the rest of your life. it's okay if you never really settle on a name and just go by nicknames, or go by your last name. you can keep your birth name if you want and never pick a new one. it's okay if you have a lot of names that you like to swap between or be referred to as simultaneously. it's okay to do whatever the hell you want with your name. it's actually okay if you do this if you're cis, too. anyone can change their name or choose a new name for themselves, at any point, if they want to, but especially if you're trans, you can change your name as many times as need to. you don't only get one chance to change your name
I think there's this idea of privilege that people have where if you are privileged, you become a bad person, and the more privilege you possess, the worse of a person you are, like privlege is a nuclear bomb warehouse that you can add stock into.
This is an incomplete outlook on privilege because it places blame on individuals with privilege rather than the systems which give certain people privilege, while at the same time ignoring others to their detriment.
A cis person isn't bad because they have the privilege of not being trans. The system in place which prioritize cis voices, opinions, bodies, and, ultimately, cis lives over trans ones is bad. These are important distinctions because something like trans liberation will not be a reality if we don't dismantle the system which places trans people as lesser.
We can't be friends.

Cis person just asked me why I have so many names/nicknames. 🥲
It's not odd for me because I always come across trans people who have more than one name.
It's because we have the freedom to choose a new name & can't decide which one, honey ☺️
